  • What I love about science is that knowledge and theories that were once superficial and useless, later become essential forces in our economy!

  • So true and blue! Great information, I am so glad there is another Carl Sagan, I am not comparing them, but their passion is what is needed to change society to build a better world for us, by learning what is around us.

  • but Melody Sheep is awesome

  • typo brought me here. was searching for brain ted talk got brian ted talk

  • @NotPokka Haha!

  • interesting video and very informative

  • i brought myself here :P

  • A post on my Facebook wall brought me here

  • I admire him so much he has made so many things more clearer and fascinating to me.

  • somewhat proud that i brought myself here.

    inspiring :)

  • I saw this on an iPad advert...

  • carl sagan was such a beast and so is brian cox, what a great speaker

  • I understood every bit of that and he is so right that little dot contains life since the start of the world however it happened and it will be sad when the suns expands and burns this beautiful planet into a desolate fireball that will cool down then the deserts will be glass so Its best we preserve it while we can my relatives will have to live on the world we create today and tomorrow

  • Beautiful.

  • Brian Cox and Michio Kaku are my favorite physicists

  • @OcelotPwns OMG same! they're both absolutley awesome and i know mchio kaku from the discovery channel, btw do you watch those physics of sci-fi or something like that where he looks at things in science fiction and see's how he could make it science fact.

  • @OcelotPwns Well said, good choice, happy new year :) .

  • @OcelotPwns

I used to like Kaku, but his 'sci-fi science show' cheapens the brand. I'm not a po-faced Sheldon but I prefer the Cosmos/Ascent of Man/Wonders approach to educating the public. Too much science fiction gets in the way of facts.

  • I'm very hetro sexual, but DAMN intelligence is sexy!!

  • I'm only watching this because I'm in love with Brian Cox and want him to marry me.

  • "the further away you get from it, the more beautiful it seems"...

I know some women like that

  • Wonderful... Dr. Cox is a real oral genius!!!! :D great.... loved it.. specially the ending notes...

  • this guy is utterly amazing!

i can never get bored listening to him!!!

  • 1968?????? He's 43???????

  • @YUNODERP i know right? i thought he was in his late 20's or something!

  • Space exploration is very important for economic reasons.. we need oil and gasses.. we need to do something before we run out of oil, or else we can only wait until we all destroy outselves

  • fuck AT & T, slowest internet service ever! i hope they go bankrupt .

  • *happy sigh* science is super sexy with Brian Cox presenting.

  • symphony of science brought me here

  • The Universe is made of 12 Particles of Matter, Four Forces of Nature!!!

  • Symphony of science brought me here

  • Speaks nothing but the truth!

  • So, the Science budget funds Arts, Technology, & Humanities rather than religion; so those who don't know more about science spend their cash on war & manipulation which as you can conclude, a waste of money. So, I'm going to invest in science rather than the continual input of propaganda, bullets, & trinkets made in foreign countries. If companies saw that people's interests lied in science rather than unhealthy foods & cheap possessions imagine the how fast we could propel the human race.

  • ' The Quantum World! ' by Melody Sheep/Symphony Of Science brought me here.

  • Thumbs up if Aperture Science Labs sent you here

  • Quite funny at&t commercial at the end - "Broadband high speed Internet".

On their website the fastest service they provide is called "Max turbo - up to 24Mbps" - WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!

In Sweden 100Mbps has been standard for a several years now and just some weeks ago commercials started that announced 200Mbps for SEK199/month (about $31). =D

    watch?v=eB6vLluF4hs

    watch?v=jVzLunvct8M

  • @Merecir F### maybe i should move to sweden lol

  • <3 Brian. he gives me hope.

  • Brian is my hero

  • /watch?v=2pfwY2TNehw

  • Anyone knows who is the last quote taken from? And its exact words. Im really amazed by it. THANKS

  • @MrFieryinferno Carl Sagan. You can watch Cosmos, his series on science, its full of inspiring thoughts.

  • @MrFieryinferno Type "Pale Blue Dot" into youtube, you'll get a great narrative by Carl Sagan.

  • Comment removed

  • Where did he say he work at ??

  • @MrFieryinferno CERN

  • meanwhile, the space shuttle program is terminated...

  • @Karmakameleeon That's a good thing

  • he looks like if paul dano and cillian murphy had a baby.

  • @neurance lol so true.

  • You get the feeling that Brian Cox could stand in front of politicians and give this speech and completely change their minds about shrinking budgets. Sort of how Mr Rogers did to congress.

  • @BlueThunderFlik That would be nice but I think you underestimate the stupid, self-serving, money grabbing nature of todays politicians.

  • It's amazing how he just knows everything he knows. Theirs no podium with notes on it. He just talks and talks and talks. No ques, no notes. Just knows it all. Simply amazing.

  • Fantastic.

  • @blenderpanzi you may think so...

just watch tim and eric explain the universe and tell me who is better...

    youtube [dot] com/watch?v=AaNLDJGvrbU

  • @romanpr1nce That link doesnt work. Who are Tim and Eric? I search it but i can only find a strange comedy duo.

  • @JabberCT it was working when i gave you the link. you clicked it too late.

    this link works though

    youtube [dot] com/watch?v=6ZlssB9u-Lw

that was an excerpt from a comedy show. my original comment was a joke. its not funny anymore though. lol

  • @15Sammyboy Don'd forget Neil deGrasse Tyson. But then I think the list is indeed about complete. :)

  • Seriously, what is hard for the governments is to increase the budget for science programs without rising questions from the population about the relevance of this increase of budget.

  • Go Professor Cox go. Spread the word of science. Please free the rest of us from the Creationists.....

  • tim and eric explain the universe so much better than this man. but this man is still awesome. :)

  • @romanpr1nce What Tim? What Eric? I think Brian is doing a very good job. Have you seen "Wonders of the Solar System"?

  • 24 completely brain-dead, heart-dead idiots who had their delusions of grandeur shattered by the last 3 minutes clicked "dislike".

Great talk. Awesome guy. Superb message. I want Sagan to be quoted at my funeral.

  • The world needs more particle physicists, and less politicians. Actually, politicians - like lawyers - should all be abolished.

  • I havent watched this yet but lol i already dont like the guy cuz he looks like tom cruise. Will def keep an open mind >.<

  • @sdrawkcabnipyt LOL i love how thumbnails are so small..

  • @sdrawkcabnipyt well??

  • @ah4fecksake thats not tom cruise. and i enjoted the talk :)

  • @sdrawkcabnipyt excellent!!

  • excellent. thank you for making this video available for us.

  • my mom tells me i look like him, i personally don't see it, then she urges me to watch his show

  • 600 bn Pounds is nothing compared to what people are spending on technologies to kill other people.

  • @MillyVanillification those same technologies are the only things keeping you safe and providing me with a job. well, mostly the safe portion, be thankful for it.

  • @MillyVanillification I agree. human beings have spent hundreds of trillions of dollars, pounds, or other resources for weapons and other tools to kill each other.

  • Imagine.

  • Imagine scientific study of cancer and disease without the limits of funding! We could solve these problems in no time.

  • I'm not sure how we started talking about Astrology, but if you condemn pseudo-science, you should also condemn science-fiction. These are useful tools for motivating young students into pursuing a career in the sciences; who hasn't watched Star Wars, Fringe, or played Mass Effect, and asked "Why can't we do that?" However, it is partially the job of the scientist to help people discern real science from pseudo-science, so that they are not lead astray. The public must know the difference.

  • I think of him as a new Carl Sagan. Young, brilliant, creative, wonderful speaker, and able to explain complex science to the layman.

  • Brian Cox is not commenting on religion or astrology, are you people even listening to his words or just jumping to the same ridiculous conclusions you always do when you are threatened by intelligence?

  • The people here, and in every other video about science, who throw out a blanket label on all religious people as "dullards" and "a drag on exploration" need to have your heads examined. Any true christian that actually believes in the bible, knows that god called for the exploration of the universe and how it all works, and that fighting one another and being foolish is about the worst thing you can do. Learn to live together instead of jumping on a hate bandwagon and being a damned fool.

  • Everyone seems to be commenting on the pros and cons of exploring 'astrology'... surely you mean 'astronomy'! There is a difference!

  • 22 people believe in talking snakes.

  • @hannahisjokes 24 people can kiss my ass!

  • It's quite obvious how keen professor Brian Cox is on exploring astrology thoroughly before he jumps to conclusions that astrology is rubbish. It's exactly like the religous people when they during the renaissance put scientists in jail for stating that the Earth is round! How open minded and tolerant he is

  • @maurelp professor cox doesnt need to carefully conside astrology everytime it is brought up to him. Sometimes he doesnt need to waste his time...

  • @maurelp They stated that the Earth is round through reason and observation. No Scientist need waste their time with astrology. It is pseudo-scientific nonsense, and the fact that the greatest minds of our time continue to tell you that says it all.

  • @maurelp There's no benefit to science and humanity in entertaining ridiculous ideas. Astrology qualifies as ridiculous.

  • I have got that Carl Sagan pale blue dot quote on my living room wall.

  • Excellent as always from the Prof. Enthusiasm is infectious, whether it is maths, science, music , or a language, should be taught and approached in a similar fashion. to be Creative and show degrees of application from the outset is crucial.

I'm sure Prof Cox will be inspiring everyone young and old.Very refreshing in times of austerity.

  • I wish I had a job that I loved half as much as Brian Cox.

  • @15Sammyboy ANd Justin Bieber.

  • the reason that its cut is due to the fact that the masses who pay for taxes, have a better understanding on war then physics, so there more willing the shell out for that. its sad.

  • One of the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational talks I've ever heard.

  • How does he look so young?

  • his face is so shiny!

  • @manoskolam1 his face is so pretty!

  • @loopylukittyify

    I agree, his my baby

  • Dr Cox is now an OBE as of yesterday !

  • 0.6 %!? what about usa or china?

  • @korzen321 it's about the same in the US aswell, not sure about china, maybe even less.

  • orgasmic

  • Only 0.6 % of the GDP on science? Really?

  • thanks for posting!!!!

  • wow I never even thought of how the root of helium is actually related to the sun. Cool!

    and R.I.P. Carl Sagan

I wish he could have lived to see his powerful words transforming so many people.

  • It must take a sad, miserable, intellectually immature mind to be a part of the 18 who didn't like this.

    This was an amazing talk.

  • 18 Darwin awards wannabees.

  • @unatics fuck i finally lol'd at a comment directed to those who disliked

  • @unatics fuck i finally lol'd at a comment directed to those who disliked

  • Hopefully space research will surpass the economical profitability that of oil wars soon, that way "first world" nations will stop wasting trillions of dollars killing each other down here and instead look for life out there. That day earthlings will be on true srs bsns. Hope to live long enough to see that day.

  • Those who are made of stars, naturally look at the sky and yearn for home. Godspeed to the conquerers of new horizons. well done, Brian!

  • i cried when he recited carl sagans words, very powerful

  • Perhaps the church should donate to society for a change.

  • @jacksawild Or we could start taxing churches and use that money for science. Wouldn't that be great?

  • Comment removed

  • @aaronbobaron They would be sooooooooooo pissed!

  • If we expel god, we will have lot more explorers, lot more funds to explore...

  • I hope that people realised that where the arrow points out the science budget on that poster is not where it's actually located.

  • great talk.... and my condolences to those who didn't like it :P

  • A tiny blue dot... it's fascinating to think of how small we really are in this world. People like Brian, the late Carl Sagan, many folks in NASA, and others really inspire me to learn more about the universe. I hope we continue to strive to understand earth and beyond... if for nothing else to continue our own survival

  • Yes! Brian Cox said it they way it is ...or at least should be. Great job Thanks.

This is what should be shown at the beginning of the year in every high school science classes to put into perspective why we learn about our world.

  • @disp3rsion and carbon made fools such as you

  • @disp3rsion God made your mind that small.

  • 7:00

  • 17 people drank the koolaid.

  • Great lesson but not the greatest argument for continuing to fund curiosity based research.

  • 1:34 AH BRUTAL! Arts and humanities funded from the science budget.....ouch.....

  • Great talk.

  • I've tough a few astronomy lessons and I can't totally sympathise with Brian at the end of his talk. Sagan and a small few others have had a fantastic ability to describe some things and it's all too easy to rely on their words because you want to make sure you do the brilliance of these ideas justice, even when it's really supposed to be your talk.

  • Brilliant talk.

  • @greenmoss yes!

  • What kind of person would thumbs down this video? 16 people did...though 1,135 thumbs up'd it. Perhaps those 16 thumbs down' were accidents...

    ...I hope

  • I am seriously so in love with Brian Cox. Is it weird that he's 20 years older than me? :P

  • he likes the words fascinating and beautiful

  • science turns me on

  • we have alot of shit.

  • Brian Cox explains how curiosity-driven science pays for itself, powering innovation and a profound appreciation of our existence...

  • Brian Cox is going to be the new Sagan.

  • Brian Cox is amazing.

  • Well Done Brian Cox! Thanks for delivering such an insightful talk, Carl Sagan would be proud.

  • he looks like Cillian Murphy a bit.

  • Great stuff again Prof.

  • I love Cox

  • Having a religious dispute under this video only underscores Sagan's quote there at the end. It's also a bit tactless.

  • @abyssquick. Carl Sagan was fab and said some great things but he would've certainly approved of challenging people who use a mismanaged imagination against cold hard facts. Today we can watch galaxies and worlds being created all the time, we KNOW who this planet was made, we have EVIDENCE and yet there are still disillusioned nutters claiming GOD created the world. There's no physical evidence for God and the concept of God is not even viable as a theory. Ignorance must be challenged.

  • Only a bit tactless. In that I come here to listen to these talks, and see the same petty squabbles going on. The battle against reason has been going on for many centuries. Far too long. It's always the same type of stuff.

  • @abyssquick Makes you wonder though - approx 10% of the UK are active in a Theistic religion - why do such minority opinions prevail so strongly? Why do the non-theistic population tolerate it?

  • In the States we have a 15%-ish non-theistic (non-religious) population that is latent and often immobilized by religious majority in the arena of politics.

To me, it's mainly the interventionist junk that is bonkers. The universe clearly operates within understandable domains, adherent to natural laws. It is a physical thing. God can obviously no longer that territory unless a person is willfully ignorant, or insane. (Which are strong cultural traits with some religions, unfortunately.)

  • @abyssquick As per believer Bill O'Reilly, 85% of Sweden, 65%of Japan and 44% of Britain are non-believers... Search the internet for:

    1) 'Major Religions of the World Ranked by Number of Adherents' - shows Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: at 1.1 billion.

    2) "Top 50 Countries With Highest Proportion of Atheists" - shows percentages by country, as of 2005. with USA in 44th place :(

  • if i ruled the world every penny and resource would go on discovering the universe and other sciences, we should be a plannet of self sufficeint humans but money has corrupted that. if every person was smart enough to understand the beauty of the universe they would not care for something as simple a currency, one planet one nation one goal space exploration. i know this wouldnt work in so many ways but it does make alot of sense in many other ways

  • @daftage the debate was not about if money should be put towards science in general, but if more money needs to be put towards space exploration.

i can not deny that space exploration has brought great new idea's. but you can not predict that it will bring any more and when. so you have to make a choice, either you put money in an uncertain thing (exploration) or you put it towards problems that impact a lot of people and where solutions can be constructed. i go for the second one.

  • so yeah.. what about the shadow budget? how do i know that budget is the truth? how do i know theres not a budget that exists out of public scrutiny?

  • Too bad we are fucking each other over oil...

  • Magic man done it!!! :-D

  • I always love that Sagan's quote.

  • This seems like a very poor quality cost-benefit analysis :-(

  • I think theres possibly... 4-5 people who don't love Brian Cox in the world... and they are probably scientologists or something.

  • @theMaxyy

All the people that do not know Brian Cox do not love him, which is far more than four or five.
