Who says he was perfect? Even the children of the most perfect people have to go through a growth period, which means they are not perfect from birth, and not perfect automatically after some time. Not at all. Were Adam and Eve perfect from birth? No, they never reached perfection but became sinners instead. They fell.
So as there was the chance for Adam and Eve to sin, so there is the chance to deviate also for the children of the Messiah.
