This is actually a rather poignant moment with subtle slices of humour. It is basically Tony's grief and depression physically depicted, but only by his son. Imagine if Tony hadn't turned up... AJ would most likely be dead .... and all the hate would diminish.
AJ wasn't trying to kill himself, I think. I think he just wanted people to realise just how much he was hurting, and that he wasn't just being a soppy broken hearted teenager. This scene is the first time we really see Tony seem really worried, heartbroken and sympathetic in response to AJ's depression. Up until then, he just seemed more "snap out of it" than anything. It takes a lot to make Tony really console you rather than just tell you to move on. That's why I love this.

All things aside, I think this show did a good job of balacing the fact that Tony was a sociopathic moster... But a loving father, who would do anything for his family. This just made me remember that.
It would've made it a lot more sympathetic if AJ hadn't been such a jerkoff before this. He never seemed to be anything but a spoiled brat and then all of a sudden he got depressed and tried to off himself? If he'd been a nice, but troubled kid this would've been a lot more heart-wrenching. As it was, you sort of just pitied him and felt even worse for Tony.

This is one of my favourite scenese of all time. How Toni breaks down while cradling AJ after pulling him out of the pool is beautiful. Especially as he doesn't usually openly show AJ such emotion and instead takes the strong, Alpha role with him. I just find the whole thing incredibly touching.
To all the people who find it impossible to show the least bit of sympathy for the AJ character keep in mind he was on serious anti-depressants (which are very well known in many cases with young people to DRASTICALLY exacerbate a patient's condition, even bring them to suicide they otherwise wouldn't contemplate).
Also, he's just young. C'mon we were all young, we were all emotional and stupid once, even if it did manifest in different ways.

You don't seem to understand the difference between clinical deppression in reality and in a TV show. Generally speaking, an audience wants their characters to make sense. Having a character suddenly become depressed for no other reason besides wrong chemistry in the brain, is cheap. If AJ did not come off as such a spoiled brat for the entire show, we would probably be more sympathetic.... because as it stands, his depression stems from absolutely nothing.

This is one of my favourite scenese of all time. How Toni breaks down while cradling AJ after pulling him out of the pool is beautiful. Especially as he doesn't usually openly show AJ such emotion and instead takes the strong, Alpha role with him. I just find the whole thing incredibly touching.

To all the people who find it impossible to show the least bit of sympathy for the AJ character keep in mind he was on serious anti-depressants (which are very well known in many cases with young people to DRASTICALLY exacerbate a patient's condition, even bring them to suicide they otherwise wouldn't contemplate).
Also, he's just young. C'mon we were all young, we were all emotional and stupid once, even if it did manifest in different ways.

They have trouble empathizing with others because they themselves don't fully understand how emotions could be such an essential part of someones life. For example, some guys who break up with their girlfriend, just walk off like it never happened, however others might dwell on it for months or even years to the point where they stop thinking rationally, because the emotional bond to that girl was very strong.

You don't seem to understand the difference between clinical deppression in reality and in a TV show. Generally speaking, an audience wants their characters to make sense. Having a character suddenly become depressed for no other reason besides wrong chemistry in the brain, is cheap. If AJ did not come off as such a spoiled brat for the entire show, we would probably be more sympathetic.... because as it stands, his depression stems from absolutely nothing.
