what a great vid of hard rock gods in their embryonic form.... mick bolton (of atomic rooster) on guitar... pre schenker, but a great guitar band even then.... damn they were young.... i used to have the 3 pre schenker albums, i think they were japanese imports, the first album, flying and live.....
poser music ?? are you shitting me dude ?? the addition of michael only made them a world class rock machine !! the guy is probably the greatest guitarist ever and you say poser music ?? go smoke some more crack....
The guy playing the goldtop Les Paul looks just like Gary Rossington from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I know it's not him, but the resemblence is uncanny in this video.
This was a GREAT band until Mick Bolton left. First two LP's are TOTALLY BREATHTAKING and I will defend this opinion against any foes, under any circumstances. Then Bolton left and they became a bunch of faggots. KAJUKU, KAJUKU!
@AXEFLYERFV you're right, I shouldn't call them that rude, I apologize. But You won't convince me that their music haven't lost all the power and the balls when he left. Just listen to those records in a row, difference between 1&2 and Phenomenon is HUGE. Unfortunately it's not the change for good.
@ijonus It's cool man,I didn't mean to lash back at you that way,I think is just a matter of taste,I come from that time & I know back then a lot of guitarist were Aalready sounding with that same tone & the wah pedal like Bolton,& when Schenker came in & change the UFO sound & even got better year after year I became a Schenker fan!
@AXEFLYERFV well, I'm a lot younger. I first heard UFO cca. 15 years ago in a radio, it was "Doctor Doctor" for sure, "Too Hot to Handle" and some other pieces from that period. And I really hated them, they sounded like a boring pop to me, all my later meetings with the UFO has only strengthened this feeling. And suddenly few months ago I'm in a pub and I heard some bloody awesome music that I couldn't identify it - tried my phones TrackID, was waiting for lyrics... ->
--> but to no avail. Fortunately radio had a display that showed the title. It was "Flying", middle part. Next day I found it on Youtube and listened to this piece for a whole day in my office, and then next day... :) Then discovered "Silver Bird" and my jaw - already dropped - got buried deep in the ground :D Then the rest and UFO 1. I was stunned. But when I gave the Phenomenon and later recordings another shot it sounded like a boring pop again. And hence my anger.
@ijonus Doctor Doctor & Too hot were the more commercial radio songs, have you listen to Scorpions Lonesome Crow album? I posted the whole album, give it a listen if you can!
SCORPIONS [ I'M GOING MAD/IT ALL DEPENDS ] AUDIO-TRACKS
@ijonus You're right, the band changed direction completely after Bolton left, they lost their psychedelic edge and eventually became arena rock kind of poser music
oh yeah! I got "UFO - Flying" as a birthdaypresent!! Many Years ago! And This Recordf rockes - really - it rocked without ... ahm anything else! Uknow! A Fanttstic album - not to compare with anything today! So natural it's as the Titel says .. FLYING!! Really great!!
mick bolton was the guitarist....i bought this album shortly after it came out....many many years ago.......im 53 now and i believe i bought it in highschool..........ufo was my fav band in those days
such an awsome song *.* i heard it the first time a view years ago and every time i hear it i want to mosh xD and.... but guitarsolo is longer in the version i have on mc... its so rock and just soooo roll ^^y
@Computerpilot1 Ha ha, very cool, very cool. Gotta love the flashbacks, eh??? Me finding a band called Harpo on Youtube (HarpoRocks will make it easier to find), blew me away - used to see them in '83 They were killer, the originals were good, covers were on point. The vids don't do them justice, of course -- they rocked out and the guy could sing.
schenker was a great guitarist and had a lot of great guitar parts but bolton had songs that sort of warm and you get so lost in them songs like flying and others from UFO flying my dad has their first 5 albums on vinyl (or however you spell it)
Let's not forget Paul Chapman who replaced Schenker - I've seen both - Chapman was no slouch just check out songs like Makin' Moves from 1981's Wild Willing and Innocent.
You're lucky - I had to find out about UFO on my own back in 1974. My dad never had any of their records only vinyl crap like Englebert Pumpernickel and Jerry Valium.
and actually i did a report in school on UFO (lets just say everybody learned something ex: band itself) but it said the band had 8 former guitarists and the one they have now
Sorry - don't wanna be a smart ass - "full version" without the whole guitar solo? and isn't (correct me when I'm wrong) the right title "Prince Kajuku"? As I know the acoustic instrumental on this album is called "The Coming of Prince Kajuku" - don't get me wrong - I'm glad this is posted here - one of the biggest rock songs I've ever heard!!
By full version (I should have been more clear) there was a shorter version on youtube previously, found a longer version though not "complete" version. You were correct on the title-I was playing this song in a band in 1974 - you think I would have the title correct by now! Thanks..REV
No one is better then Herr Schenker, but that doesn't make this less important music in the UFO canon, folks! I have the Story of UFO Too Hot To Handle, this clip seems from that. I will upload Schenker from the Kirshner Rock concert series from 74!
actually I just dont like the style of UFO with schenker....he isnt a bad guitar player but he is actually nothing special for me...ive seen UFo live at the recording of their live DVD in wilhelmshaven germany in 2005...it sucked
Thanks for those pictures. Never tought that 1 day I can see pic. of 1 of my best song of UFO. Between Marsden and Schenker, was shortly a very underrated guitarist : Larry Wallis (Ent. Sioux Nation, Blodwyn Pig, etc) but best know for been the guitarist and singer of the third Pink Fairies LP : Kings of Oblivion and was the first guitarist of Motörhead in 75. Thanks. The Swiss Rockin'lumberjack
Intersting..I was in a band in 1974 called Starz (not the infamous Starz though we had the name before them as they were called Looking Glass - Brandy). Anyway, we barely knew how to play. AFter buying Phenomen we sought out there other records which weren't many and discovered this gem.
unfortunately UFO became an unimportant rockband who had done nothing special...thier first two albums are really great...but then...i dont know man...
I came to know them from Obsession and the then new Wild Willing and innocent... With Paul Chapman they still rocked. This for the time, check out the live version with the slow mid section, the best!!!
Actually, in 1972, Mick Bolton left UFO and the music business altogether. Bernie Marsden replaced Bolton prior to Michael Schenker's arrival. Marsden had the passport/visa issues which prompted UFO to borrow Schenker for a series of shows - and the rest is history....
This is pre Michael Schenker..features Mick Bolton on guitar who was replaced by Schenker in 73 after not being permitted into another country re: passport-visa issues. Mogg-Way asked the Scorpions who had both Rudy and Michael Schenker in the band, to loan Michael to UFO for their show that evening that Bolton was detained. Schenker knew their songs and pulled off the show & ultimately joined UFO. Scorpions replaced Michael with by Uli Roth who appears on their second LP Fly to The Rainbow.
He had to learn the songs, mostly, but had heard of the band, as I understand it, he spoke very broken English and learning music notes proved a challenge!
