Thats a cute tortoise! I have a Sulcata. He's a bug 20 pounder. He lives in my backyard. Perfect weather for him. I plan on getting another. I just built a garden for him with all his favorite flowers and greens. He loves it! I have pictures of him on my myspce check him out!

I want a tortoise but waht kind of food do they eat and what kind of environment do i need to give them? and also do they need UV bulbs like the aquatic turtles?

they need basking bulbs, the temp should be anywhere from 75 to 95 since they're desert animals. They eat lettuce, cucumbers, very little fruit every once in a while, carrots, anything with high fiber. Although because of an unhealthy diet they can get mounds on their shells. They can have wood chips, ( large enough that they wont eat) terrarium lining, plants, places for them to venture (roaming room, they love to roam) and a cool hide out!

I don't know if you knew it or not,, but you're totally correct.

Tortoise ancestors were probably fish eaters, just like their turtle cousins. At some point, they adapted to land dwelling and switched almost exclusively to vegetable eating. Good observation!
