wow yu ppl have nothing better to do than argue about this all day? lol...this man is not to fat for the pony... the pony is not lame and he doesnt have all thats tight of reins.f you look closley his hands are up high on them but not pulling thats at the horses mouth..however e is pretty stiff and unbalanced in the saddle wich could have contributed to the pony stumbling.also the saddle does not fit it properly. i would sugest some new tack and lessons for the rider.. beautiful pony though.
ok to agilitypoodle385 no you dont always need a tight rein... my AQHA mare does not need a tight rein i dotn need reins or anything i ride her with nothing but my voice and the guidence of my legs.... and same for my AMHA mare all you need is your voice and leg cues.....so thats not true witrh all horses even my 5yo qh mare doent need a tight rein she dont need reins either only leg and voice acually thats with all 7 of my horses except the 2 babys and the pony
That horse is not lame, he's tolting. Which is a 4 beat running-walk. On Icers you must have your reins that tight, b/c when they tolt they bring their head up and tuck their butt under them. The horse most likely tripped b/c he was leaning too far forward, Icers center of gravity if much farther back than with most horses. Believe me I would know I've been working with them for 16 years. Pretty little horse.
That's what I don't get - and I'm serious that I would like to know - why the tight reins? I've grown up being taught light hands - with pleasure horses to barrel horses. I have never found a reason for a trained horse to need that tight of a rein to perform a gait.
Well from what I've learned the tighter reins on Icelandics helps support them and its also another sign to them that they should be tolting and not trotting. While I'm riding the Icers the only time I have a "tight" rein is at the tolt, and even then the rein isn't that tight, its not like we're tugging on their mouths or anything, just some support. Some Icers tolt on a lose rein, but for most it is easier to get them to tolt on a tighter rein going up hill. Its just how they're built.
Plust, at least with the english discipline I've been taught that with a "tight" rein we mean just enough contact so we can barely feel their mouth. Yes, there are riders out there that literally pull on their horses mouths the entire time, but not in my case anyway, and most riders. My motto: As relaxed as possible and as firm as necessary. Your horse will tell you what works best for him.
So basically, just like any discipline there are just nasty people and good people. Having seen a few of the videos here I see a lot of people (at least the ones videoing themselves) do the 'try to pull the horse's face off' version of 'contact. I find that horrible - just as I find rollkur horrible.
Yes, exactly, its all the rider. Although I've noticed with Icelandics they work better with a little tighter contact than most horses. Anyways if it really bothered them, they'd be up in the air and on top of you in no time xD.
The reins need to be let out and if ANYTHING like that happens you ALWAYS dismount immideatly and check your horse. Open your hands and check your horse. If the rider wasn't so stiff that may not have happened
lol you dont always need a tight rein...healf the time ur horse wills poil with a really tight rein and a normal contact rein is better and a lot of voice...=]
i didn't meen always in that type of way, i only realised i wrote always when i posted it lol. the pony i ride doesn't respond to voice and when you are going faster than walk you need a tight rein otherwise he just gets faster and faster lol
