@Lacross523 It's a Continually Variable Transmission. It has no actual gears in the sense of a traditional transmission . When they first came out drivers did not like the fact that it did not seem to shift, so most CVT's now have simulated shifts that mimic how a traditional automatic works. This actually is slower, so when you floor it in drive mode the computer turns off the simulated shifting to maximize acceleration.
@Mike060504 Hi Mike! It's because a CVT transmission does not have gears. CVT stands for Continous Variable Transmission. It is hard to explain with words but its like two cones with a rubberband in the middle moving sideways to adjust the rpms. Search how cvt works here in youtube for further info!
This video is not true.. The RPMs don't match up with the amount of speed changes besides i have raced with a 2011 Nissan maxima V6 coupe n i smoke it pretty bad with my 2008 Acura tl type S but nice video:)

@jsnevels2 I think the point is that you CAN'T buy this car and NOT get the CVT. They originally offered a 6-speed manual (and regular 4- and 5-speed automatics) on this car, which made it fun for people who like to drive sticks. Now you just get the CVT with no other option.

love cvt's, ive been told the way to get better acceleration from a cvt by doing a brake and gas takeoff, which i have never done before in my 08 lancer with a 2.0L four cylinder, how do you do a brake takeoff? do you just rev with your foot on the brake then take off? btw i love cvt because they accelerate fast at higher speeds, but today on the freeway i averaged about 41.9 MPG, when my car is rated at 33.

Not to mention my moms altima 2.5sl cvt did 15.7@90mph in the 1/4 broke in. So let me see a sonata do that broke in. Last time I checked 2007-2009 altima 2.5s got 7.2 to 60mph and the 2011 got 7.8 to 60mph cause of longer gear ratios .

The S is a little bit faster going from start because it is a liittle bit lighter but other than that MAXIMA's will beat most of the "sport sedans" other's make. I raced a Taurus SHO, TL (base), Charger R/T (Yes this is true), Camry (V60, and an Accord (V6). Won them all. Maxima's are a beast in manual mode past 60 you just need to know to to shift them correctly. They will do 140 if not 160. I have got mine up to 142-143

@bacvain i have a maxima, and i HATE the noise the transmission makes, but its proven to be faster and economical at the same time, the maxima still out performs many cars on the road, you can put it into sport mode to get normal sounds, but it isnt as efficent as cvt..

The first run was a little slow but the second was fast. You just have to use manual mode. Too bad that dam CVT slows things down. There is no excuse for how slow the Murano is.

@ColtonKuhn1 it is changing the gear ratio all the time, depending on what you do with the gas pedal. please search for this video "How 'Subaru' Lineartronic™ CVT works?" and you will see how it changes the gear ratio all the time. it just does it so fast and so many times to keep the revolutions on the optimum level. it rocks
People .... If cvt was bad this car wouldn't be quicker than a Hyundai Genesis 3.8 sedan .This car isn't slow at all unless you car doing the 1/4 in 14.3-14.5 sec slow ! The Avalon can't do it ! It's a dude on here with an auto maxima just with cai and exhaust and he did a 14.2 . But if you get a manual just get basic bolts on and some good tires and you will be around 13s to high 12s

@jsnevels2 I think that as well, but if it helps increase both performance and fuel economy I'm alright with it, just as long as the maintenance isn't through the roof (but with the car manufacturers currently putting these transmissions in their cars like Mercedes and Audi, you already expect maintenance to be ridiculous).
CVT isn't terrible, its just "different" and clearly the wrong choice for a performance oriented sedan. But thats just me

@jsnevels2 I think the point is that you CAN'T buy this car and NOT get the CVT. They originally offered a 6-speed manual (and regular 4- and 5-speed automatics) on this car, which made it fun for people who like to drive sticks. Now you just get the CVT with no other option.

love cvt's, ive been told the way to get better acceleration from a cvt by doing a brake and gas takeoff, which i have never done before in my 08 lancer with a 2.0L four cylinder, how do you do a brake takeoff? do you just rev with your foot on the brake then take off? btw i love cvt because they accelerate fast at higher speeds, but today on the freeway i averaged about 41.9 MPG, when my car is rated at 33.

@FusionBoy2010 and btw ! As long as Nissan has most 5's and 4's there is no problems. But yet again. You sonata 2.4 doesn't do 16 flat in the 1/4. Not to mention my moms altima 2.5sl cvt did 15.7@90mph in the 1/4 broke in. So let me see a sonata do that broke in. Last time I checked 2007-2009 altima 2.5s got 7.2 to 60mph and the 2011 got 7.8 to 60mph cause of longer gear ratios .

Actually the only reason why the sonata has passed the altima cause they havn't completely redesign the altima. When you have a redesign car vs a refreshed car the sales are going towards the redesign car. Any Altima wins.

@FusionBoy2010 Wrong. The G37 mt does 0-60 5.2 sec and 1/4 13.7 sec @ 102mph. And the G25 isn't in this so it has nothing to do with this. Still that maxima will kick the Taurus 3.5 ass with 260hp. Now you can't say it can't . And MKS and Sho will get it's ass handled by a M56s so have anything else to say? i can easily get a bolts on 2002 maxima 6sp mt and it would rape your SHO big time . And look you have 365hp with twin turbos when Nissans 370z puts out 350hp N/A so who looks bad now. I can easily get the G IPL that has 348hp and it will win. If you compare the taurus with 260hp it will get raped by 2002-2012 maximas easily especially those 2002-2003 with the 6sp mt .

The S is a little bit faster going from start because it is a liittle bit lighter but other than that MAXIMA's will beat most of the "sport sedans" other's make. I raced a Taurus SHO, TL (base), Charger R/T (Yes this is true), Camry (V60, and an Accord (V6). Won them all. Maxima's are a beast in manual mode past 60 you just need to know to to shift them correctly. They will do 140 if not 160. I have got mine up to 142-143

@bacvain i have a maxima, and i HATE the noise the transmission makes, but its proven to be faster and economical at the same time, the maxima still out performs many cars on the road, you can put it into sport mode to get normal sounds, but it isnt as efficent as cvt..

Me personally I dislike CVT. When they go wrong, they definately go wrong.
Even simple things like trying to get a driveshaft for a micra with a CVT gearbox, the backlog was 6 months!!

The first run was a little slow but the second was fast. You just have to use manual mode. Too bad that dam CVT slows things down. There is no excuse for how slow the Murano is.

It's a dude on here with an auto maxima just with cai and exhaust and he did a 14.2 . But if you get a manual just get basic bolts on and some good tires and you will be around 13s to high 12s

@jsnevels2 at the moment i'm driving a golf 4 1.4l 2000 edition, but in about 5-6 months i will get a 2004 BMW 318i, it has about 143 HP, i don't think i will tune it, i would just love to get a bit future in my new car :D and it would be good to know how much i would have to pay to get the cvt in the BMW... so if you have any info it would be great =)

Hmmm all I have to add is cai , exhaust , and a tunning chip for the cvt so it will have better topend . so bye- bye camry ! That's what happend when you want to mod a car and then compare it with a stock car. With car , and exhaust , and chip easy low 14s maybe high 13s with a good launch. Car aleready does 14.3-14.5 .

@starksy17 And guess what ? It's not faster than a G37 times prove it all ! Ahah and a 3.8 genesis IS NOT FASTER ! the maxima wins 1/4 and 0-60 . It's funny that you have to have more litesr or a turbo to beat a car that N/A . Not saying either car is slow but the SHO will walk a stock maxima hands down . But the SHO isn't in the same class as the maxima.

@jsnevels2 If I loved CVT so much I would buy a gas powered scooter and drive that everywhere instead of a car. But I don't love it, quite the contrary in fact.

@jsnevels2 No one said I had to buy it, I just can't see any car enthusiast that would buy an automobile with a CVT transmission. I think Nissan shot themselves in the foot not offering a manual transmission on the Maxima for the past year or two (don't know exactly, don't look into Nissans that much).

@Nebraskahusker23 I said nobody had to buy it ! Nissan hasn't offered a manual in the maxima since 07. I see alot of people buying cars cvts and they don't see nothing wrong with the them . A cvt is better than a 4 sp auto and a 5sp auto.

@jsnevels2 I think that as well, but if it helps increase both performance and fuel economy I'm alright with it, just as long as the maintenance isn't through the roof (but with the car manufacturers currently putting these transmissions in their cars like Mercedes and Audi, you already expect maintenance to be ridiculous).
