Learning Latin isn't just to learn other languages like portuguese and stuff, it's just memory training. Your brain get's trained to stuck up big Parts of Learning substance at University. I'm not saying it isn't helpful, but it shouldn't be the main reason of learning it :)
Romanian has a different grammar that the rest of latin languages because we were isolated from the rest of latin languages and our neiughnours were non latin speaking(hungarian and slavic languages)
italians and romanians somethimes can understand th other ones languages even if they never heard a word from it,here's a example
Romanian:Lasa-ma in pace
Italian:Lasa-mi 'n pace
(in english means Leave me alone)
Romanian is very simillar to italian but our grammar is different,in romanian we align many words differently from other latin languages and this is why many find romanian difficult at a first sight.
I don't see how so many people are complaining about learning Latin in school! Do any of you know how badly I want to learn Latin? Very. I know this would help me so much with my studies. Come on, guys. You'll know the language nobody speaks anymore. You'll impress your friends!! =D
My #1 reason to know latin is to freak people out. Imagine, none of your friends know you speak latin. Next time your bonked on the head, start twitching and roll your eyes to the back of your head then start reciting the lords prayer in latin....friggen hillarious!
French and classical Latin have a relatively small common nucleus. For example, only etymologists can find the common features in the vocabulary, and even these findings are contested by some authors (e.g. Mr. Yves Cortez). Grammar, Syntax, morphology and pronunciation are very different. For a French speaking pupil, learning Latin is like learning Greek or German; that means it is like learning a foreign language and not like learning a related language.
you know which is even more cool language father and master of all indoeuropean language... learn hettit language+ old indoeuropean+ sanskrt now these are exceptional languages-latin only denomination or sth like it of IE language...
I challenge anybody to give me right here 10 or 20 Latin words of whatever Grammatical Category and I will derive them from their Greek roots (for the ones that derive from Greek of course). Then we can see the percentage of Greek in Latin.
The Latin Language is a simplified version of the Ancient Hellenic (Greek) AEOLIAN Dialect, and the Latin Alphabet (also the English Alphabet) is the Chalkidean-Aeolian Alphabet.
So the ultimately initial source of ALL Western Languages is Hellenic (Greek). Whoever knows Greek can get very easily Latin and thence Italian, French, Spanish, Portugese, English, Romanian and the others.
Well, it seems that you understood completely the message. Just one advice: you are a Brazilian right? Then I suggest that you go into the rain forest and go jump from tree to tree and have a great life with your own kind. You don't need Latin for that. Have a good banana!!
And that's why I study it! You'll be surprised at how many of our English words are influenced by or derived from Latin! Not only will you understand our language better, but you'll have a whole new view and understanding of words and their meanings. Lingua latina magnus est!
I'm sorry, but I still don't see the point of learning Latin.
Except for those who study Linguistics and Law, learning Latin is pretty useless.
"Language learning machine" haha, I laughed so much at this part.
It's much better if you learn Latin Languages directly. You see, I'm brazilian and I think that "living" Latin languages help much more in foreign language learning than the old Latin.
guess what. Latin is used to describe every animal in the world. I dont know if this is in the video because i still havent watched all of it but every species in the world has a latin name and Latin is still used in Philosophy as well. If you love culture, history, literature, philosophy, poetry, aurguement, rhetoric, and the universality of Latin. Classical Latin lets you understand the very core of human expression and communication. You should check out a latin text and do a lesson or two and you'll see what I mean.
probably you don't know anything of Latin; If I'm wrong, you must to know the living Latin languages are filled of "dead" Latin words; they simply have changed because the empire's extension. When you see anything of other Latin languages (I'm Spanish) knowing something of Latin, you really understand too many things of the formation of the words, and you feel better
I advise you (and everyone) to learn something (i don't care how many) of Latin, and then, uestram sapientiam mihi dicite
I agree totally. Learning Latin is utterly pointless unless you are an academic interested in doing original research, or have some bizarre fetish for obscure Latin texts. Other than that, all the important Latin literature has translations in English etc.
It helps very much so to know Latin, especially if you are one who is trying to learn another European language like Portuguese. I know four languages as of today and I am very proud to say that it all began by taking Latin. It's not so much the language that is important, but the fact that when you take Latin, you get taught all relavent parts of grammar and then you can apply this knowlegde to help yourself learn other languages easier.
Well your language Portuguese came from Latin. If you know Latin, it's much easier to learn French, Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Catalan, Italian, Romanian and half a dozen other sub-languages. Also the grammar in all these languages came from Latin and makes it much easier. Latim é muito útil para mim. ;)
well it depends on what u wanna do. its a great opportunity to read all the great autors of european history in the original language.
its necessary to know it if u wanna study religion, history, archeology, and strongly recommended for medicin, law, philosophy and other sciences as well.
My children are studying three romance languages, Latin, of course, which is the basis, French, and the regional language which derives from the Latin too, Bearnese Occitan and Spanish.
And English, too, which is rich in Latin influences.
Learning any romance language will help you just as much with learning other romance languages, give you language learning skills, and actually be useful because it's spoken somewhere.
Latin nouns DECLINE, making it an inflected language, which gives language skills far superior to any other Romance language. I can attest because I learned Spanish before Latin, but not until I learned Latin did my command of languaeg so drastically improve. Plus, Latin is an unparalled academic discipline for the logical, critical thinking and grammar skills it builds in addition to reading two thousand years of literature, history, philosophy, etc.
I am home schooling and am learning Latin and teaching it to my kids I am going to purchase some good curriculum and then the Rosetta stone program. I understand the importance and I want to give my kids the gift of knowing Latin!
Great video I am posting it on my home school blog thanks!
aghhh you guys are disgusting its not important to learn this fuckin language its all bullshit! English is the language that you must study and if you study latin its only just a waste of time FFS it wont make you smarter
we some slavic words because we have almost only slavic neighbours(Serbia,Ukraine,Bulgaria,...Hungarian is a finno-ugric language so it's something else from the other European languages, and Moldavia is a mix country)
Have a look at France,Italy,Espana and Portugal's neighbours ...
Romanian is a Romance language, it is not Slavic, not Germanic, but it's mother language is Latin and it is a Romance language, you learn some history.
Of course romanian is a latin language! nostrum(latin)=nostru/noastra(romanian), sunt(latin)=sunt(romanian) , vita(latin)=viata(romania), transversus(latin)=traversus(latina vulgaris)=traversa(romanian) , scribere(latin)=scriere(romanian-long infinitive), imperium(latin)=imperiu(romanian), nigra/nigrum(latin)=neagra/negru(romanian) and many other exemples! Romanian also keep some word from thracian(dacian) language!Romanian have also some slavic,greek,germanic,etc influences,but just a few!
I was put in Latin class my sophomore year because an Art class wasn't available for me, and I am so glad that it turned out that way, Latin is my favorite class!
And seriously, I feel pride learning Latin than any other foreign languages, I mean, there are like millions of people who can speak French or Spanish, one wouldn't be so amazed if you can speak either, but it takes a true hard-working person to master the Latin language.
"it takes a true hard-working person to master the Latin language." Does that also mean that Latin is a hard language? Because I'm kind of lazy, but I'm really eager to learn Latin
The comment in the video about Latin learners doing better on the SAT can probably be ascribed to the fact that those students are probably going to a prestigious private school, or are more motivated learners in the first place.
Hahaha, nimis ridiculum et verum, domine. Re vera daemonia pauca in interrete ipse expulsi paucis temporibus! Idiotae ubique exsistunt retro angulum omnem. Cavete ne stultia eorum inficiant vos innocentes!! Valete.
you wont't get smarter when learning latin or do better on the SATs this person is just an idiot.... because it is latin bullshit, if its so good why isnt still around
Tacere inutilis mentula cum quae non novisti metuens contemnansque deridas aiasque verbis quae a Latina lingua in ipsam qua uteris irrisionis causa ineptis stultisque linguam hanc pulcherrima deceret te!
(that means "You'd better shut up, you stupid asshole, since you're mocking what you don't know and it's with words that from Latin came in that language you're using to deride it that you're saying that this wonderful language is for stupids and idiots!" in Latin)
I am all for studying other languages. I studied Korean at DLI. I have recently become interested in studying Latin. Any recommendations on books or programs?
Personally, I think Wheelock's Latin is still the best program. The books are readily available, entertaining, effective and inexpensive. Learning Latin by yourself is a challenge, though; its not like learning a modern, spoken language. Although I whole-heartedly say go for it, a tutor or class would really be the most effective way of studying.
if its so beautiful and logical why did history get rid of it with languages today and if it so good we could easily go back.
(To increase english vocabulary) this is false because to increase my vocab of annother language by learning a different language is silly and you would need to know the latin more than you know english if you were to read english , not know the word but get it in latin you must be good at latin.
You grow your English vocabulary with Latin by understanding how the words we use in English that are based on Latin work. For example, if you didn't know what the English word "Praetermit" meant, by knowing Latin you would see that it is made up of the common Latin words "praeter (besides, beyond)" and "mitto (to send or let go)" and could surmise it means something like "let go beyond/besides;" it actually means to disregard. Also you used at least 10 words from Latin in your reply.
I don't really understand why people think Latin shouldn't be studied at schools simply because it's a dead language.
Studying Latin improves your skills, makes you speak ANY language properly and lets you learn a lot of things about ancient civilizations and modern aspects of society. That's much more than what learning a "living" language does.
100%. I've taught myself to write both Greek and German fairly well and can speak the former very fluently now, which also happens to be quite similar to the Latin. Someday, if I ever meant with my old Latin teacher again, I will offer him my sincere gratitude for his diligence and talent in teaching.
Nothing is wrong. It's a good language. Don't listen to the other people, when you do better on ACT, SAT, college english classes, resume writing, foreign languages, math, and general everyday speech, you'll have the last laugh.
Wouldn't you rather take a language that isn't dead? To be able to speak to other people that don't speak English? Just seems much more logical to me.
Looks like you have never studied Latin in your life.
Studying Latin at school is different from studying any other language - students don't learn how to speak it but rather translate scripts of great writers and study Latin grammar. A normal Latin course doesn't turn people into Latin speakers - it's up to them to improve their skills and being actually able to speak Latin.
I personally love Latin although I'm not able to speak it and I suggest people to study it. =)

About 60% of English Vocabulary comes from Latin. English is a true marriage of Germanic and Latin (German grammar, Latin vocab)...
The Latin mostly indirectly of course via Norman-French.

Are you kidding me? English just copied words from French...
Pracaloid 2 years ago
English has many words from different languages. Not just French.

70% french, 20 something% Germanic words, the rest is other stuff

Any recommendations on books or programs?
lumpybiscuit 3 years ago
Personally, I think Wheelock's Latin is still the best program. The books are readily available, entertaining, effective and inexpensive. Learning Latin by yourself is a challenge, though; its not like learning a modern, spoken language. Although I whole-heartedly say go for it, a tutor or class would really be the most effective way of studying.

this person is an idiot
(because its latin)
if its so beautiful and logical why did history get rid of it with languages today and if it so good we could easily go back.

"this person is an idiot"
Pot, kettle, black!
"if its so beautiful and logical why did history get rid of it"
History did not "get rid of it." The language died. That's what happens to languages.
"and if it so good we could easily go back."
Not as long as idiots like you are around.
The rest of your word salad does not even make sense.
Also, why do I seem to notice that all people on here complaining about Latin have a horrible grammar and spelling?
TomSFox 3 years ago
I don't really understand why people think Latin shouldn't be studied at schools simply because it's a dead language.
Studying Latin improves your skills, makes you speak ANY language properly and lets you learn a lot of things about ancient civilizations and modern aspects of society. That's much more than what learning a "living" language does.

100%. I've taught myself to write both Greek and German fairly well and can speak the former very fluently now, which also happens to be quite similar to the Latin. Someday, if I ever meant with my old Latin teacher again, I will offer him my sincere gratitude for his diligence and talent in teaching.

latin has a very lively community if you go to events and stuff liket hat

I'm going to study Latin in High School, and everyone is telling me to drop my class, because it's a dead language, and I'm going to regret it.
...What's so wrong with Latin? o_o
crackerstackers 3 years ago 4
Nothing is wrong. It's a good language. Don't listen to the other people, when you do better on ACT, SAT, college english classes, resume writing, foreign languages, math, and general everyday speech, you'll have the last laugh.

These people are philistines!
TomSFox 3 years ago
Wouldn't you rather take a language that isn't dead? To be able to speak to other people that don't speak English? Just seems much more logical to me.
HooverBeast 3 years ago
Looks like you have never studied Latin in your life.
Studying Latin at school is different from studying any other language - students don't learn how to speak it but rather translate scripts of great writers and study Latin grammar. A normal Latin course doesn't turn people into Latin speakers - it's up to them to improve their skills and being actually able to speak Latin.
I personally love Latin although I'm not able to speak it and I suggest people to study it. =)
