  • I like the potstands. I made a simpler form without the esbit stand underneath that works great with an alcohol stove. I might steal your design.

  • impressive, 5 1/2 minutes.

  • Did you see the new and improved canteen stand at canteen shop . com ?

  • Yes I have. I'll have to test one sometime. Hint, hint. ;-)

  • HIRAM LOVE THE TEST vids. I bought surplus ( warped & distorted) stoves. So to make the warped surplus canteen stoves usable; I hammered them back into shape on a canteen. This lead me to rolling/peeniing the stove top over. this reduces the diameter/size of the canteen support edge. Combined with rotating the canteen 180 degrees it seems to work well & nothing else to carry or lose or misplace. Thanks for the tests again.

  • HIram great test! I was wondering does an esbit cube leave us much residue as the coghlans? Also, have you ever done a test on a stainless kleen kanteen bottle or Guyot lying 'horizontally' on an esbit stove with a tealight alcohol stove or esbit cube. I've heard it heats much faster that way and you can even heat it with the cap on if you leave space in the bottle. I would love to see you test that theory. Until then...celebrate life! Laurie

  • Once the new kits are out with My Stoves and the Heavy Cover Lid I will send you a Full set up to Try hiramcook. Shoot me an email or pm so I know where to ship it.

  • @canteencorner That would great! I am looking forward to those tests! Warmly, Laurie

  • Cool!

  • Very good. Thank you!

  • I love the way you review a product .

  • not terribly hard for you and me but tell that to my 90 lb wife! lol she just can't push hard enough to scrub it clean! Great video, lots of good information thanks for sharing!

  • Nice Mod for the stove Hiram

  • Great shelf! Thanks for all of your tests!

  • It should not soot that bad, but you did have a high flame. I'd like to see how you get on with this using just one tablet brken in half directly on the grill (no foil). The pot should be much cleaner and you can add a further part tab to bring to the boil if necessary. There should just be a little varnish on the bottom of the pot which will easily scrape off with a knife. I do much like the dropped support, but better if can be in one piece.

  • Very good idea.

  • Much better results that the previous Goghs tests.. Nicely done.

  • Yes, I was very surprised with the results. It might have something to do with the hardware cloth providing more airflow to aid the burn. I'll have to look at that with other burners.

  • @hiramcook

That would be my deduction as well.

Air flow is paramount with solid & converting (evaporation) fuels.

  • Hiram with my Scouts I have them add disk soap to the bottom of their cook gear before cooking over wood fires and their cook gear cleans up very good. This might also work with other fires with soot.

  • I used to do that too when I was in Scouts. It did make it easier to clean up the wood fire soot. Wonder how much the soap would effect the heat transfer. Some time ago I did a video where I checked what using aluminum foil on the bottom of a pan did, something else we used in Scouts, and it really slowed down the heating. Might have to try a boil time test using soap.

  • @hiramcook Yes that soap test would be very informative!

  • @ironearth701

If you do not have dish soap. Try a thin layer/rubbing of mud, works just as well it crusts and falls off once cool.

  • ★★★★★

  • Thank you.

  • I'm impressed with this set up. The boil time is significantly reduced by a minute or so. I think you're right in saying this is pretty dirty, but in a pinch, this fuel sorce would work. Might be something to put into a pack for a alternative fuel sorce other than just building a fire out of twigs which results in just as much soot on your pot. Nice test.

  • 5/5 thnx for sharing

  • Great test Hiram and not a bad boil time either. I like the bent coat hanger bits. The cup looks far more stable then with it just sitting 180 degs on top of the stand. Looks like a worth while addition. I don't think anyone using a GI canteen/cup set up is going to be enough of a gram weenie to worry about the few extra grams that will add. 1 question I have though is with the cup resting on your wires do you still need to set the cup on at 180 degs?

  • Probably not. I guess I went 180 out of habit.

  • @hiramcook I suspect the fact you do so much out of habit is why your stove tests are always the best.
