  • Fantastic toy for the PP: pope n president

  • a godless man if ive ever seen one...

  • @dionstrezlecki I'll take him over the Pope. At least he actually does something.

  • @dionstrezlecki

And that is a BEAUTIFUL thing!

  • X-MEN!!!

  • Folks you're thinking tooo small. Designer babies lol. Think about being able to order a kit online that will turn you into a new species with 8 extra tentacles and a couple more brains. That's where this is going. Designer babies is a joke. If you want healthy babies read up on epigenetics.

  • Venter calls me a "Caltech Professor" in his talk. Just to set the record straight: I have held an academic appointment at Caltech since 2007, but I am not a professor. Mike Gottlieb

  • Wow. Dare I say we(humans) succeeded evolution as the main decider what genes we are composed of...

Perhaps not yet, but it seems well with in 5 years. Who knows?

Being a layman, I do not know if we can change the genes of a living creature in real time... But a virus can mark a species through out the ages. I guess it could just be the eggs and sperm which are effected, but those last for only a brief amount of time.

So we can change our genes in real time? Will we loose consciousness?

  • @lordjavathe3rd why would you LOSE consciousness from doing that?

  • @hmspinaforethisisspa I guess I wasn't clear enough.

I simply wonder if you changed your own dna in order to enhance your mental facility, would that disrupt your mind enough for you to loose consciousness. I have no idea what the effects of something like that would be, although it does seem plausible that we could do such a thing with out greatly damaging our existing neural network.

  • @lordjavathe3rd I'm pretty sure we can't change our DNA. We can probably change the DNA in a single cell, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to change much. But who knows, maybe if you change the DNA of a cell, if it replicates fast enough, maybe it can take over. Anyways, I'm no expert either...

  • @AleifrLeifrson You are correct, we can't change DNA to affect a whole living person. A quickly replicating cell, like you describe, is basically cancer. The best we might be able to do to a living person is to change a large amount of adult stem cells, and as they will proliferate to a huge number of cells.

  • @terracottapie13 How about deactivating genes or activating dormant genes? That happens all the time in our bodies, so I don't see why we couldn't do it on purpose.

  • @AleifrLeifrson Sure, it's easy enough to inject molecules which are a part of cell signaling pathway leading to gene expression regulation. I am by no means an expert on the subject but I guess we will eventually be able to have complete control over gene expression sooner or later.

  • @terracottapie13 Really does that sounds like something normal to you.. for people to be able to take control over the genes ? I believe if we do end up changing the genes in the future..what if those scientist make some mistakes, and those mistakes in genes will be passed on and on into the future offsprings.. humans like to play with fire until they eventually get burn.. there is no such thing as perfection..so mistakes can always happen... Letting the nature take it's course is the key .

  • @EuropeanGuy87 There are definitely areas deserving ethical consideration within modern biotechnology. As our ability improves we will have to tread more carefully. However saying "not normal=bad" is committing the naturalistic fallacy and not a valid argument. Should we "let nature take it's course" concerning diseases? To me one of the most exciting possibilities of being able to control genetics is to give people with genetic diseases a chance to have a normal life, is this unethical to you?

  • @terracottapie13 You don't see the big picture ! You are talking as if humans created nature ..the world is already overpopulated 3 times more than it can support.. and it keeps going up very fast. We both know they won't only use it for a medical purpose.they will start doing designer babies..and very terrible things.. humans are humans..and unfortunately there is more bad than good these days ! I could give u many reasons why changing genes is wrong !realistic ones that will change your mind

  • @EuropeanGuy87 Would you neglect treating a suffering person because the world is overpopulated? I do not see the logic behind that. Overpopulation can probably be solved with a combination of technological advancements allowing us to sustain a greater population (such as maximizing food production and space exploration) and cultural advancements leading to people having fewer children (many western countries have reached the point where only immigration increases the population.

  • @EuropeanGuy87 Also, who are the "they" you are talking about? Anyhow, I suppose "they" are people who'll have to follow whatever laws democratic societies decide on. And in my experience a vast majority are against "designer babies" meaning it will not be legal. The "very terrible things" you mention will also be illegal, or they probably won't be all that terrible.

  • @terracottapie13 Anything can be done for the right amount of money ! You obviously did not experience life as I did.. I studied abroad in US then UK, I been traveling literally all over the world ever since I was a child because because of my father's business and network. Illegal ? cocaine and heroine are illegal and yet people are doing it more than you think..do you have any idea how many kilos of heroine come from the middle east every year ?? despite the high security

  • @EuropeanGuy87 I do not believe, for example, making designer babies is as appealing to people as heroin and the technology involved will be vastly more difficult to acquire compared to making heroin. Which means at worst designer babies will be made on a much smaller scale. Will that really be such a bad thing compared to letting millions of people suffer because of genetic diseases?

  • @terracottapie13 Human trafficking, there are been cases of Europeans women (specially Russian) being kidnapped brought to Saudi Arabia, some people collected their eggs they got rid of the women afterward..and use European eggs with Arab sperm to make mixtures.. Maybe Americans may control this in U.S but out of US ..I don't think so

  • @EuropeanGuy87 As I can't imagine the scientific value of someone with a european mother and an arab father to people involved with human trafficking I have a hard time believing this to be true. There are tons of people with parents from different parts of the world. My mind will be changed if you provide sources.

  • @EuropeanGuy87

Say What? So we should be eating grain in its natural form of 15,000 years ago? We'd get maybe 20 bushels per acre. Man has toyed with and modified crops and beasts since the beginning of civilization. Going to the genetic level is the same thing, only more precise. As for mistakes, just look at "Purebread" dogs and other inbread mistakes. But you won't count these.

  • @NickInDetroit I studied Human Anthropology and now Genetic Engineering to argue with you on this is a dead end - I want you to solemnly trust me on this ! Our ancestors toyed with animals for basic needs and domesticated and mixed them for their both animal and human advantages - it has absolutely nothing to do with what we do to the crops nowadays..it's 2 very different things that don't go together.

  • @EuropeanGuy87 You have no idea what natural food is because you haven't taste real food yet and I say this as friendly as possible. I wish I can bring you here in Europe one day and you prove you wrong. Make you taste bread made from the real unchanged grain in the Eastern Europe. - My grandparents live and have seeds from wheat, corn, and all vegetables passed on from generation to generation as old as 500 yrs ago.. organic ones.. I cannot describe you the taste of real tomatoes here.
