  • I learned Poi in YOUTUBE Academy :D Thanks to this guy :D

  • I agree. Beginning has been awesome. Every new pattern gives a wonderful new feeling when you finally get it. I look forward to hitting up one of your classes some day and finally meeting you in person!

  • the camera makes it look like you're swinging sledgehammers. awesome.

  • Best Definition of basic poi ever!

  • i wish you could come to San Francisco, or somewhere in the bay area of California.

i really want to take a class, any kind of poi class.. :( there isnt any classes here,

but their are millions of poi spinners. i just started spinning fire, an i would

love to have an instructor other then myself.

  • @DakotaSAURUS there are local workshops. check out the crucible in west oakland... i hear their classes are awesome! agreed though... if nick came to the bay, and i had the time/cash it would take a class with him in a heartbeat...

  • Please come to Sydney!!!!!

  • allmost there :)

  • were do you get the glowing balls .i have looked everywere.

  • begining is the best part of poi.... i agree i remember the feeling when i first did a 3 beat weave :) and every single time you learn a new move it comes back..........I LOVES IT!!!

  • see, thanks to your website im able to do /most/ of what you consider the basics, but the difference is you make them look cool and smooth and natural, and i dont feel like i do. I just hope that will come with time.

Although to be a litlle bit more fair, it may not help that I have to concentrate in order to prevent myself from destroying everything in my room, so I cant play as freely as I'd like XD

  • it does come with time. just after u keep doing them ur body will master it

  • go practice outside

    i do it anywhere :D

  • wow. i try practicing poi and watch some videos with those really hard tricks and now i see this, i'm like..

pfft! oh thank God i found you!

    haha total relief.. xD

  • im in new zealand and there r no workshops of any kind here as its only just starting to take off..well in saying that i know poi comes from nz but its not that popular in most circles ( parton the pun..) most of wat iv learned has been threw ur vids nick witch r great and i jst got sum new fire poi with the swivels!! cant wait to practice!! um yeh i know most of those moves n a coupl othrz iv seen but the bakwards stuf very triky any help would b great

  • i cant do ANYTHING backwards its annoying i can only do butterfly when forward i can weave my poi behind my head

  • but only in playing poi ^_^...LOL

  • hey nick. . .i have a friend and his also very good in playing poi....he's like a filipino version of you. . .he's a fan of yours too... ^_^ ill upload videos of my friend someday ^_^ hehehe

  • I have those poi, they can flash colours really fast aswell if you want them to, they have three functions but they really hurt if you accidently hit yourself with them. yeah. ow.

  • i want solid color oggs...that are selectable for the color or pattern... hrm

  • Are those oggpoi?

  • i wacked myself in the face doing huggy crossers and now my lips are numb :(

  • lol i like the ending. =)

  • Nice video, but I just whacked myself twice in the face and once in the ricesack within 2 min, so it will be a while before I try this with fire.

  • what you tried butterflies?

  • i do not get how to do the behind the back thing...i am sorta freaking out because i can't get it...any suggestions?

  • Guys when i saw poi spinning at first it seamed so difficult.

But now iv only 4 days of practice and i already can 6 or 7 basic figures and im really in to it.

Can anybody tell me how much does it takes with 30 min practice a day to become an average poi spinner?

    Thx in advance

    G.

  • well that depends on how hard your practicing but i youre practicing each one of the 6-7 basic figures every 4.5-5 minutes while exploring other movements you could become very skilled in the art of poi

  • I having serious trouble with behind the body my arms get stiff out of instinct and i end up clubbing myself lol anyone in NH who could help me?

  • well you could stretch like simple stretches that work with the arms and warm up the arms a little if they stiffen up again =)

  • Dammit, I keep trying to pay attention to what he's saying but I get to memorized by the lights and before I know it I'm 5 inches from the screen like a moth...

  • score i can do all those XD XD!!

does that mean im no longer a beginer / novice

  • hehe in that philosophy or something i would be considered a semi expert XD

but keep workin on it... learn up to 5 beat weave and il consider u a pro ;)... i dont consider myself that good

  • Vids or it's not true.

  • your awsome!!!!!! :D ive been spinning about 2-3 weeks or so and ive almost got the basics down, cant wait to learn more

  • I just started. ^^

My sock poi kinds suck, but they do their job.

I think they're a little short and uneven, but I kinda just spin them all the time so I get comfortable with them.

  • another good idea is 2 cut a shoelace perfectly in half and use dead glowstix. or even put the laces through tennisballs.

  • Ny one here no of ay poi store in usa

  • flowtoys is based in the us i think

  • flowtoys is based in berkley california, block D sean and prisna are really nice people

  • 2 months ago I didn't know how to do any of this

now i'm the best poi spinner from my school :D

  • LoL I know how it feels.. been doing this for a while.... and I am not only the best but... well the only spinner at my school

  • i love the sound effect you make at the end! whoosh whoosh! haha awesome!

  • ah! I can do three beat forward, but not backwards XD

  • i started to love poi when i seen someone like you whos always willing and love to teach poi by by uploading your tutorials... keep it up... thanks...

  • if this is what he considers "basics", then I now nothing about poi and I should inmediatly quit XD

  • don't worry, my friend

just keep practising and you'll learn these basics rather quickly :)

  • did u quit?

    u shouldnt

the practice makes all keep working

im working hard to in my pois too jeje

    dopnt give up

  • I'm quite excited - I can do most of that and I've been learning for about a 2 months. I just haven't quite got into linking and my fluidity needs work.

  • When I will see a poi workshop in Venezuela? T.T... at least, I got your videos and the other guy's who share good energy with poi videos :P

  • I love how you take my pattern. pattern. pattern. mentality of poi, and stand it on its head and remind me to go back to /dancing/.

Even a short video like this makes me go "doh" and come up with a half a dozen things to practice/use, even if I know almost all of the individual patterns (darn the behind the back butterfly... I'm just really weak behind my back, in general. lol)

  • ahhhh, i wanna go to one of your workshops!!! well maybe someday:( keep the good work!!!

  • Ah, Nick, even the basics you make look so fluid and graceful.

  • you are such a show-off, but at least you are good! Well, amazing at poi, i have to admit.

  • well, that's kind of the point, isn't is?

  • I meant his personality is show off, and his poi playing amazing.

  • nice pants :P

  • where are the classes u speak of in your vid?

  • are those ogg-pois?

  • Looks like them

  • you need to explain HOW you are doing these...

  • he has tutorials, read the profile. this isnt a tutorial on the basics, its what you need to know before attending his workshops

  • I Love your videos!

You have been an inspiration!Such fun en energy :)

Will you visit the Netherlands someday?

  • hay nick howya ur ur lessons r very help ful hope to take traning from ur work shop some day if r u visiting thailand or india any time this year plz let me know

  • damn nick, when is you're ban on the US over, your classes sound fun :P

and on a completely random and off the wall side note.... your website is teh broke =(

  • Hey, Nick! I watched your video and I think I'm ready for an advanced class, too! The problem is, I don't know if you could come to Kansas to have a workshop where I can attend! It'd be great if you could! I love to watch your videos! They're funny and informative...the way teaching is supposed to be! Thanks a heap!

    Joy

  • I believe Nick is banned from entering the US due to a customs kerfuffle. Its on his site somewhere.

  • It's easy 2 4get about the basics when ur always in pursuit of the more advanced moves, and the basics can look just as good when spun right. Now I'm definitely going 2 practice the basics a lot more than i have been, thanks heaps Nick

  • yea im lost .. but im still learning ... just got poi today actually... so yea hope there are more videos like this one that help with the "basics"

  • This is totally going to become my warmup

  • I was trying to learn how to change directions with my body and spin the poi, and your video helped me out so much with that. I didn't realize the hands were passing in front or behind the person during the turn. Amazing that it took watching you do it to finally figure it out!

  • I'm being somewhat loose with the idea. I don't want people to take it too seriously. To me, the basics is what allows you to dance freely with all 4 modes. Also, it's easier to teach advanced classes if you can show people what they need to know first. Otherwise it's tough to lead a workshop .

  • hey, nick :] well, ive been watching your videos for quite sometime now, just bought some flowpoi, and got them about a week ago (amazing by the way, unbeatable in the poi market imo) and ive been basically learning off of your vids. i am utterly obsessed with your stalls, i have been practicing them for awhile and am excited that i have improved, any words of wisdom for a huge fan emerging into advanced poi spinning? :] thanks for being an inspiration. -james

  • The basics are relative. When poi was relatively new, I bet some of this was extremely advanced :) It's all about the circles!

  • the only other one i consider to be a foundational move is the buzz saw

  • never realised isolations were advanced...

  • THESE ARE THE BASICS???!!! these seem like a pro thing. esp. the backward of all movements.

  • Sweet, I've already mastered the basics.

I think I can do some advanced stuff though.

I'd love you forever if you checked out my poi videos Nick :]

    Thanks for all your tutorials.

  • the butterflyweave is the only thing i have left :)

  • done :)

  • nick it wold be osome to buy ogg poys whith colecord anr qhith the special handles for orbitals or superduperuperloops, please, sold it to geter and ensambled, and, your videos are usefull, you realy past your entusiasm for the poi to me, i love this thing of playing poi

  • Wow! I think I know all the basics XD, just where is going to be the poi class?

Are you going to post something in youtube?

    See ya!

  • zomg that end waz kwl

ye i havnt mastered the basics but i can do them all woop woop ^^

  • Thats a really good summary. Very helpful. I am short of 3 tricks to reach this level.

  • hmm, cuople more days of training and i should be able to do all this tricks, but firts i need to finish my sockpois :D

  • Holy crap! That's what you call basic? I really stink if that's the basics. I'm no where near that level. If only I could attend your workshops.

  • I agree with Kjellgirl, a good introduction to the basic and maybe a little more advanced than that. There are no workshops around here or even this country but would love to learn some more if I were to travel to one.

  • Nick, thanks for this video! I really like to see videos that goes through the really basics in a good way, so I can be sure of what the basics are, and so I can learn that proper.I know most things you showed here, but, I haven't thought of linking them together in all that ways you showed. So thanks again! You're awsome!

  • I noticed the oggz were one color too. Sorry to hear about the guy who's oggz broke, I've put mine through all types of use and abuse. They have become extensions of my personality and my arms. They only need charging once a month, the oggz seem invincible. Great video Nick, I feel better because I am pst there, but still working on the more advanced stuff.

  • Those oggs were custom made by sean from flowtoys. they are not regular oggpois. they have lights from ikea in them

  • that explain why they are so bright. are there any faq´s how you do to change your ogg-poi?

  • you have to ask sean or prisna to make them

  • Nick tell me you'll be at play festival this year in the uk? You know you should!

  • i see your oggs are fixed colour, can we the public buy them as that? also hats the durability&battery life like on them? I got a set-perfect feel and weight but they died after the led unit came loose inside them, it seems that the glue doesn't like hot weather very much as they hadn't had much use.

might just stick to my flowpoi in future...

  • Woot, I am pretty much go to go to an adavnaced work shop, oh wait. I forgot. I live in Newfoundland where no one poi's. :(

    You should come here. XD
