incorporate ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian and locrian modes all up the neck in the key of A and while doing that spice them up with interchanges of pentatonic licks, maybe throw in some 1, 3, 5, 7 arppegios in the form of AM7, Am7, Adiminished, also string skipping licks sound great with blues, I like to use them with a swing feel.
Hey just saw this video. The answer to your first question is Fm pentatonic (Amaj pen) up an octave. You know everything starts anew at 12th fret correct? So it would go that Fm pen at the 2nd fret would also appear at the 14th. Likewise, the A position will reappear at the 15th. You can play any frets in btw; every scale is movable up the entire neck asextensions (modes) of that scale.
Good video, Good lesson in applied musicianship. I teach,as well, and I am happy you made this video..there are so many ways to approach the blues..and this video helps to show one of the ways. Well done. -GtrGeorge
Needless to say, unbelievable playing. Oh how I wish I would have started playing earlier in life. I see you play a Strat, but what kind of pickups, amp or pedals do you use to get this sound. Thanks for great music.
jalles56. Thanks for the comment. The pickups are just the texmex pickups that came with the Strat. I was using a Boss Gt-6 directly into a mixer, no amp.
Hey great stuff and amazing skills!! Are you also an acoustic guitar player? I am a guitar player too, I play mostly acoustic but I uploaded one video on electric (check your video responses). Send me your acoustic blues vids.
I subscribed to your channel, I'd be thrilled if you click subscribe on mine.
Read the (more info) section of the video please before you make statements like this. Thanks bunches. And honestly if you aren't getting anything from this vid at all, your either already at this level or don't understand what I am doing at all. Have a good weekend. :)
forget that last question. Was that Am pen you were playing around at 2:16-2:22? I think you got the meat and potatoes with that one. Thanks for posting publicly
Very nice mixture of riffs. It's good to hear someone get away from strictly pentatonic and add those few extras that give you a distinct style. Keep on rocking!
hey guy, real good vid, just wondering if you have a tab for any of the licks on there. I have figured the chord base but the licks are where it's all at.
You sound great. I really like it. Can you tell advise me on buying a guitar? I like the sound you get. I am toying between a Fender Stratocaster and a Epiphone Les Paul. It looks like you are playing a strat. I am not sure about the Les Paul because it is such a fat sounding guitar. What do you advise.
If you are looking to do more bluesy sounding stuff like SRV. Stratocaster would be the best choice in my opinion. I only own Strats, but would like a Gibson. Just can't afford the one I want. Go check out my vids. I just bought a Fender Fat Strat for only 400 and it sound great.
dude blues is all about making people feel as bad as you feel, thus the the name "blues", no scale, just feeling, ok and a bit of scale i suppose but no heart ach no blues.
your tone, and technique is well suited for blues playing and your improvisation is great !. I wanna play blues licks like you...with out staying in the same position for 5 mins lol...5 stars *****
A very good lesson in scales use over the Chords and rythym section..I was wondering if you can send me a copy of the backing track so I can practice my scales over it?..or reccomend a site where a similar track is located..Thanks..
In this clip I was using a Boss GT-6 with the Marshall 4X12 amp model turned on. I then ran it directly into a Mackie board and then into my cameras audio in port.
The backing track is from a CD I have called five feather music/band in a pocket.
I will try both scales and see if the major and minor work. If they don't, then I know I should only be playing the minor. I posted a vid response to my own video of an example of me only playing the minor pentitonic scale. You can hear a definite minor chord in the progression.
Hey folks, I have been getting a lot of emails asking when to combine the major and minor pentitonic scales and when not to. If there is a dominant minor chord in the tune then you will not be able to play the major pentatonic only the minor. If there is not a dominant major or minor chord in the progression, you will be able to switch between the two scales and it will sound good.
On the I Chord(A) are you primarily playing A major pentatonic? Then, on the IV chord, do you mainly go with the A minor pentatonic? This has always been a source of confusion with me as well as what to play on the turnaround V chord. Thanks.
Geotubest, Depending on the chord you are playing over, you can(in this example)switch between the minor pent and major pent whenever you would like. There are however certian notes that sound better over certian chords. In the turnaround the minor pentitonic will sound better, but it is a matter of oppinion. You could play major. My playing is based on what I think sounds good. You have to find your own style.
Blues is 1/4th Music Theory and 3/4th Feeling. So yes, you can Very Very Easily Play Blues with Out Scale Knowledge However, it does help to know what your doing and what key & Time Signiture you are and and so forth. For fuck sake..i hate people who base everything on theory, the result of that is a repetitive condemned style. People who dont understand that pushing the boundries of "rules" is what makes an original guitarist are very closed minded.I mean i know what this guy is talking about, but someone who doesnt should not give up hope and anyone who says they should is incredibly ignorant.
How do you get that sound of those scales? I know the scales but it always sounds like I'm just running through them. NO Soul or feeling like you; man, I need some tipsl.
When I first started playing I tried to copy other players alot. I played a lot of shred though, becuase it was back in the 80's. I eventually got to a place where I wanted to find a more distinct blues rock style.
The soul thing comes with time. You really have to feel the beat/rythem. Tap your foot, move your body a little. Make your scales and licks more expressive, by using more vibroto or beening beyond what you would normaly bend to. Let me know if you have any questions.
Srmacsk, this whole video is pentitonic. minor and major pentitonic. If it is to happy for you, then don't watch or listen. I play how I play bro. Peace.
