This is essentially as a Thin Lizzy song...Just with out Scot Gorham. Scott and John Sykes are so awesome. This song is so sweet. I can hear it a thousand times and never tire of it.
All this talk about Sykes and Moore were assholes and Robertson had no discipline I find a bit annoying...Hey Lizzy were the boys and the boys meant trouble, they wouldn't have been Thin Lizzy if they were a bunch of mama's boys. Every member deserves appreciation for the time they spent with the band. Can't really say anything bad about Lizzy except that Philo and Gary are gone. R.I.P.
@GeorgeHarrison66 not sure when you met John, but after a Thin Lizzy show some time back I spoke to John for quite a bit of time, he finally said, why don't we find the bar and have a beer where we continued our conversation; John could not have been cooler.
@GeorgeHarrison66 Any man who can write songs as beautiful as the ones on John Sykes' Loveland album can NOT be an asshole. Maybe a hopeless romantic that is frustrated, but he is nor ever will be an asshole.
What album is this song off? Because ive got the Thunder and Lightning album with John Sykes playing guitar on it, and that was the last Thin Lizzy album they did.
Just Curious! Phil plowed quite a few beanfields in his time. So I wonder if he has an illegitamate son out there somewhere, thats playing bass & singing? That would be too fuckin cool!
@dzsteed .:Pretty Maids version has much more feeling , LOVE YOU Pretty Maids, looking forward to hear there upcoming album this spring . Thanks for a wonderful concert Dec ,09
Wow! So amazingly classic and inspiring. John has such a melodic sensibility which he infuses into his playing and ohhh that tone from Nancy. Phil's awesome as well, what a loss music has suffered with his absence. Completely concur that Sykes is unappreciated and unbelievably underrated as a guitar player.
Never mind. I know it already. It's Sykes solo song written by Lynott. Basically it's a Lizzy song (minus Scott Gorham). The song should have been on the "Thunder and Lightning" album. Yes, it is styllistically very different than the rest of the album, but that would be fine change of pace, somwhere between all those furious hard rockers.
@blackwater1965 Actually, if you think about it, it really does show off his ability to play in a band. He's got all that skill and talent and the knowledge of when to pour it on.
sykes is an AWESOME guitar wiz, not only in solos but his riffs are killers for sure!!!!! sykes has a distinct style and sound and we can never try to measure one lizzy guitarist against another, that would be dumb! why do you think phil pick each one of them? Phil picked each one for a very very good reason, knowing full well what to expect from each guitarist! so, pls, sit back and enjoy, don't compare - it's nonsense!
Why not compare them? I'm not saying one of Lizzy guitarists is better than the others, but there's definitely distinct style differences. Sykes was really the only metal guitarist they ever had. I'm not saying he's a bad guitarist but I don't really enjoy his style as I don't like 80s metal. He still plays great, but I hate the sound. Give me Robertson anyday personally - he rips.
I don't like the 'fiddly metal guitar' in general but this suits the song to the very tee. Reminds me of a girl too 'lost lovers, in the summer, and you go your seperate ways'. Never a truer word said.
I met John a couple of years ago in Toronto after a Lizzy show and he was amazing. Talked to us for about a half hour and he was impressed by my knowledge of his career.
Its the feeling he uses in his voice, you can hear the passion through him. Also his lyrics are beautiful, not just in his songs but his poetry too.Check out a song for while Im away by Thin Lizzy youll hear it!But if you like the harder stuff try Angel of Death, its awesome man,
I'm not sure i quite "get it" about Phil's Voice. Is it that he has a tenor with low tone and that he speaks his lyric more than he sings it perhaps? I've never given Thin Lizzy a chance but I've recently gotten into Sykes. I notice too that Phil Strums his bass like a guitar.
I'd like to hear a few comments on why Phil's voice is special to you fans and what else about Thin Lizzy is cool. I of course only know "The boys are back in town" and have heard "Jail break" once or twice. Chime in ok?
Joe, Here are a few of my observatons about Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynot. Phil was the best known, most influential and talented black person in rock next to Jimi Hendrix. Thin Lizzy is widely credited for utilizing the first successful dual lead guitars (check out the Cowboy song). Catholics and Protestants alike loved them in Ireland (and that's a tough sell over there). VH1 lists them as 51 on the 100 top hard rock bands of all time. Do more research, you will come to appreciate them.
A few more things, with John Sykes, Gary Moore, Snowy White, Scott Gorham, and Brian Robertson, they've had some of the absolute best guitarists in rock.Try: waiting for an alibi, china town, bad reputation, don't believe a word, thunder and lightning (one of the heaviest rock solos ever), S&M, dancing in the moonlight...lynott's got great lyrics in every genre he touches. with his voice, it's probably that it's so laid back, goes well with scott gorham's lead style (he's on almost every album)
Joe,I don't think this is a very good example of lynott's vocal. If your into heavy stuff, check out Lizzie's 'Thunder and lightning' featuring Sykes. Theres also some great compilations out there showcasing a variety of their stuff. Definately give them a chance, you might get to like it!
Phil's voice is REAL!!!!! you dont have to stretch yourself to feel what he's feeling. I played this song for my 8yr old daughter, and she cried. When I asked her why she said "he looked, and sounded so sad", and she hoped "Darling" didn't leave him. and johns playing sounded like his heart was breaking. truly the greatest.
@torrity Oh God, such an emotive comment, your daughter is right, this song could make anyone cry, it is so full of emotion!!!, thanks for sharing your comment!!!
This was John Sykes' solo single before he joined Lizzy. Chris Tsangarides produced who had also produced Lizzy and was to produice 'Thunder & Lighting'; he brought John and Phil together. Btw, Pretty Maids also covered this on one of their later albums.
Whoever said this was when Sykes wanted to leave Thin Lizzy isn't quite right - this song was recorded before the Lizzy "Thunder and Lightening" album came out, so before he was announced as the new guitarist. I believe Darren Wharton and Brian Downey played on the studio track - it was Lizzy without Scott.
i've got 30 thin lizzy cd's.including bootlegs and i don't have this tune!don't know where to find it except here,so please don't take it down. and thanks for posting.
In all fairness though Demon, this isn't Thin Lizzy...this is Sykes and Lynott only. And this isn't the early 70's; it's 1982. However, as I said before, the solo fits fine...and the tone is spectacular. I might not agree with Thegoldenage either, but at least get the facts right before you try and pick a fight with him.
Thegoldenage ! it is ''YOU'' who is the ''TOOL'' Thin Lizzy was a rock band not pop ! Sykes is a guitar Legend.there wasnt to many people back in early '70's who were writing solos like that !he has set alot of trens for alot of guitarists.Very underated He was!
Melodic tune. The solo MIGHT be a bit busy but that was the rock sound of that time really, wasn't it? Philo was SUCH a great songwriter. Sykes brought a lot of life back into Lizzy. I think he deserves credit for that.
I disagree with goldenage...I like the solo in this song. Sure it's a lot of notes, but I think it fits the song well and makes a nice contrast to the relaxed rhythm of the rest of the song. Maybe he just wishes he had half the skill Skyes has. ;p

Cool melody, nice singing. Pity about Sykes dreadful solo - what a guitar wanker!!! A cock rock solo in a pop song. Coulda been a hit, but Sykes made it sh*t. Tool.
