And, you know, he's never listed on these "best of" compilations. When I see those lists, Lindsey can play rings around 99% of the guitarists listed--and don't forget, he's not a shredder. Melody and counterpoint are central to his songwriting and playing. Though very different players, I put him right up there with Metheny as a Guitarist-composer.
A lot of the time Lindsey's actually doing banjo runs on the guitar, and then throwing in the eccentric time signature, he's often hitting a beat and counterbeat. Extraordinary playing that few can match--Mark Knopfler? Pat Metheny, but he usually uses a pick.
how come this guy never got beyond fleetwood mac? great guitar player, good song writer, good solo recordings, but he never achieved what i thought he would
How big can you go? FM are up there with the very best. How many 'Names' have failed after having gone solo, thinking they were bigger than the band from whence they started. How many bands have splintered only having to reunite later?
My opinion, Lindsey's very introverted and introspective, he's never been a self-promoter. Also, one of the things I love about his talent, he's eccentric and completely unpredictable. You either get him or you don't ("you either will, or you won't") and many people expecting FM put his music on and go "WTF?", so he's not been promoted heavily by Reprise over the years, they just don't see him as a commercial artist. And it's a shame, he belongs in the Hall of Fame as a solo artist, too.
Extremely hard to play, shit ! This is absolutely incredible. Voice and guitar together is nearly impossible. Lindsey is crazy and a genious musician. I can't get enough !
He is playing against a slapback echo on this. Not quite as dry as the 75 or Rumours album, so don't beat yourself up trying to fingerstyle this realtime!
Buckingham played this version live on A&E Special Sessions this past Sunday, with the delay turned off. It's still very difficult too play, and he nailed it.
You hear the same thing about Paul McCartney, "Oh, I can play that, it's easy." Yeah, until you try to play and sing it like Paul, then you understand how original, brilliant, eccentric and talented guys like Buckingham and McCartney are--yes, they deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence, too.
Yeah, he's using a delay, but virtually every virtuoso rock guitarist does, some use 2. Still, his finger picking style is amazing, he stays in rhythm and time perfectly. All you guys posting that this is really easy to do, well, tape yourself playing and singing this piece and post as a response to this video. I guarantee there will be no one doing this. This is an effen hard song to play and sing at the same time, at a pro's level--plus, he...wrote...the...song...and...did...the...arrangement.
I remember seeing this for the first time, and I was so impressed...This performance really moved me. I do not play the guitar, but to me it was the most beautiful guitar playing that I had ever heard... Just listen to 0:43 to 0:56. Also 1:39 to the end...FLAWLESS! Lindsey is THE BEST. PERIOD.
Agree, boho, saw him twice this fall--his playing has never been better, especially on those Turner customs--also, he's rehabbed his voice somehow, and he's back wailing in the upper tenor range. Lindsey's at the top of his game right now.
He really is underrated as a talent to me. Ususally those that sing and play guitar at the same time are usually rythym guitar. Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson etc. And they really do it well. But to pick notes at that rate while concentrating on vocals is crazy type of genious IMO.
cripes I knew Lindz when he redided in San Fran in the late 60s...I wss 8-9 yrs. old ...ny babysitter lived a few doors away...he was on Reprise Records at the time and I have some Reprise paraphanalia he autographed for me ,to this day..and we are still pals.Wonderful man.
This performance has haunted me since the first time I saw the concert on TV. Totally raw, and yet technically great at the same time. Real passion. Brilliant.
WTF? You've got a brilliant singer-songwriter guitarist frontman of legendary Fleetwood Mac, and you use the video as a launchpad for all THIS crap? Get a freakin' life. Your school district should set a filter on Youtube so you can't be doing this instead of your school work... And they should take away your use of electronic devices in the classroom...
Really amazing. I remember this performance when Fleetwood Mac reunited. One man playing the guitar and singing that song. You would be hard pressed to find a better indivdual effort than that.
Gah! I love this man...I saw him at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City last weekend...when he played this i bout crapped my pants...every note just rips out of him..it's so amazing. Also, his explanation for the title was amazing...it's about how he was "looking out" for love by trying to avoid it, not find it. Lindsey Buckingham is easily one of the best musicians of my time. (i'm 18)And it sucks that so few people my age know about him.
As a guitarist myself with over 40 years of playing behind me, this performance by Lindsey frightens me in it's skill and virtuosity. A fabulous underrated guitarist, songwriter and vocalist whom I wish to see play in a live performance. Thank you for this video.
Lindsey is truely a legend! His great guitar solos and live performances is hard to beat, if not impossible! Fleetwood mac makes my life worth living!
so-so voice??, are you kidding me?, i wish i could sing like tha that while playing the guitar like that, you probably listen to celine dion or cristina aguilera
It's called an OPINION and I'm entitled to one. And no, a lot of the music I listen to has no vocals, but being a classically trained musician with two degrees under my belt (one in performance one in production & engineering) I feel that I can form a clear and fair opinion about a piece of music or an artist and then rate the vid and express said opinion like the website intends me to do. Anyways, taste aside Celine Dion could out sing LB anyday. See what happens when you give CD a banjo though
Oh, I see... now you have a "professional opinion" after you commented that he's got a "so-so voice" and consider it a "clear and fair opinion"...way to go!, I'm a musician as well and just like you I'm entitled to an opinion, this is truly amazing and as a musician you should appreciate that. I guess I was right... you do love Celine Dion...
The guy is touring this fall - I'm going to see him in Reading PA just outside Philly in mid-October. I'm sure his concert will be as fabulous as Mark Knopfler's.
I've always thought this was an excellent live performance. I have The Dance on cd, but it's nice to see this video. Thanks so much for posting this. I adore Lindsey!
the rythm is key to playing this song well- it is very easy to screw up.. then add the difficulty of singing and an audience and you get 1 shot at it. thats why he is rich- he can pull it off on stage.
I think the guitar is a Gibson classical - and I suspect he is using a delay but not sure- anyway, it is brilliant- and the end is primal...true art.
There's definitely some kind of delay. If you watch him pick (and listen) he only picks the (ignoring the capo) high A on the G-string one time each measure, but you can hear it repeat softly exactly one beat later, and same with the E on the D-string. It might be possible to play it like it sounds here, but without a delay pedal, but unless his finger pattern includes re-picking every single note in the entire song (including the solo) one beat later, he's using a delay.
Ok, this guy, just my opinion. Not a big deal. He is using a rebounder, which makes it sound like he's doing a lot more than he really is. And second, there are many other guitarists who are infinetely more talented and more musically genaic. Not to say that he's a bad guitar player. He's a great entertainer. But he's not as good as you all think.
he's not using a rebounder. he really is playing that many notes. my friend can play big love and it souds exactly like this, no rebounder, just a guitar and a pick.
Well, you gotta understand that he's playing on stage, concerto style, so the notes he plays are echoed. I know I'm probably pointing out the obvious, but it plays a factor in the sound of the guitar.
He is a great musician, I'm not saying he's not. He totally deserved his Hall of Fame rep. And his guitar playing skills are sick. He's a goog player. But this song, i'm just saying, is at his regular level. That's all. Not trying to diss him or anything. Nothing against him.
to coldplayere: also just my opinion. saw F.Mac only twice. Loved them.
to AfroNinja187: with only a guitar, pick(?), and that many notes, your friend must at least use a capo, some sound engineers and a mixture of strings . Btw, can your friend sing?
My mother used to play this song all the time, but she hasn't played it for a long time. I heard it again while watching Elizabethtown and I just had to find it!
Wonderful song, really magical and he is amazing at the guitar! A true musician.
The fact that my girlfriend refuses to believe that there is only man playing the guitar through the course of that song is enough justification that he is the greatest guitarist.
Amazing. I always felt Lindsey was such an underrated musician. The level of intensity he manages to pull out of a simple acoustic rendition is astounding. Go man Go!!!
Phil Collins once said of Eric Clapton's guitar playing "It brings tears to my eyes". If that's the case, Lindsey Buckingham's guitar playing should have everyone in hysterics. He IS the king.
i'm not much for "my guitarist is better than your guitarist" debates, but while Clapton serves a purpose on the guitar scene, he's never played anything as amazing as this, emotionally or technically.
I agree totally. Regarding my comment on Clapton's guitar playing and Lindsey, the "he" I am referring to is Lindsey, not Clapton. Lindsey unequivocally and consistently delivers the ultimate performance.
wow this version is amazing! a lot less reverb on the voice so you can hear every pitch perfect note(which is rare live!) ,guitar isnt too shabby either!
1:40-1:50-acoustic purity
It would be cool to see him and Mac live.
