  • Why would you dislike this?

  • Ulm

    Uowmym

  • This guy's got class.

  • very good thx a lot for posting this stuff ! David Holt ftw !! :D

  • Freddy Kruger?? :)

  • which finger are you using?

  • @raybird215 Middle finger

  • I love the sound of banjo, and would really like to learn to play. Suggestions on what type of banjo to start with (that isn't too expensive, but doesn't sound terrible)? Found a bean blossom hobo banjo for $150 on craigslist - is this a decent banjo/decent deal?

  • @ahafar1 Deering Goodtime is considered to be the best banjo for the buck. I got one on amazon for $350. from what i hear your better off starting with a nice instrument because it ends up being easier and nicer to play.

  • I didn't know Michael Ironside played banjo.

  • One of the best explanation of clawhammer technique on Youtube; I play Scruggs style but I'm so fascinated by the old style as well; it allows you to do things you simply can't do with bluegrass fingerpicks (and vice versa, naturally). On top of that, being basically an electric guitarist, I must admit it's hard to find teachers as nice as this man, (as well as many others banjoists' vids), in the ultra competitive, hi-speed, hi-tech, hi-borin' axemen world!! W banjo!

  • What an awesome instructor! I am an accomplished 3 finger picker but never played this style. This is working for me and I feel like I will be playing this style very nicely within just a few weeks. And by the way, if you have not checked out David's videos with Doc Watson on here, you really owe it to yourself to check them out. They are fantastic.

  • any one know a david holt song with the the word "they say pain will make you stronger"

  • can we work for you franky squire ba hons "fine art" too.with lea children hostages de giris.

  • can we work for you franky squire ba hons "fine art" too.

  • This is a wonderful lesson for a beginner to learn Clawhammer, Thank you so much

  • I watched this video a year and a half ago and now and I have to say it was really the only thing i needed to learn how to play. Excellent for beginners.

  • ah...better stick with the middle finger...i cant keep my hand stiff using my index...

  • so does it matter if I clawhammer with my middle or index finger??...cause it's alot easier for me to use my index finger.....sometimes I actually pluck upward like Pete Seeger does for Skip to my Lou.... so??

  • @brummeister1 Your post about which finger to use in clawhammer was some time ago, but for what it's worth, I use my index finger and a homemade pick made out of a ping-pong ball. It has a crisp sound and allows me to avoid growing the one nail long. Hope you're enjoying the banjo!

  • @billyshake Love the Banjo..Hate my nails.. they're flimsy'r than the lightest pick :(

  • @brummeister1 Try the Acri pick. You can find them on JanetDavis and at Elderly I think.

  • @brummeister1 Sorry I meant to reply to you :-) Anyway, try the Acri pick. You can find them at Janet Davis and I think Elderly sells them also.

  • Brilliantly shown for the beginner

  • this banjo is a deering goodtime basic model, they have changed , having reshaped pegheads, i have one they are magic.

  • I have looked at a lot of videos on frailing and this seems like the best--he is a very patient teacher

  • I can see the banjo is like deering goodtime .... but which exactly?? I looked throw e-shops but didn't find banjo looked exactly like his banjo.

    Can someone name model?

  • I have a goodtime 2 and the only difference I see between mine and this one is that mine has the resonator on it. Bought mine for about 300 dollars used.

  • I just bought an Epiphone from Guitar Center for $200 that looks exactly like his except for the handle is a bit thicker.

  • this is a deering good time, one of the first models without a tone ring, you can get one with atone ring.these models have been altered to have a different shaped peghead, and the whole range has been altered over the last two years.i have this model, i lent it to a friend to start him off on banjo after a while he went and bought his own goodtime, with the new peghead they are terrific.

  • @SculptorLV Go to the deering website mate, you can check out all the goodtime models. But to answer your question this is simply called the Goodtime Classic.

  • Yay! This video just encouraged me to purchase the DVD.

    Clever marketing :)

  • his banjo looks lika deering goodtime. deff one of my favorite banjos. its an inexpenisve great sounding banjo

  • can somebody tell me, what banjo he use?

  • This girl, Flowers. She got it.

  • Brilliant .Thanks!

  • WOW! This is the best video i have seen so far on Clawhammer, I JUST picked up the banjo, and i was confused as to how to play (not the hand shape, but how the brush comes into play)

I like this guy a lot, i will certainly look into his DVDs

  • Awesome lesson - very nice, thanks David and Homespun!

  • two weeks? yah right

  • Good beginner lesson on the Clawhammer style but this is NOT on the first #1 video of his that is entitled Clawhammer. On that set he starts out saying he assumes you already know how to play clawhammer style. If I did then why would I have purchased the DVD? Very dissapointed that it did not start at the beginning level. Now I have to find one that teaches the basics. Where what this video captured from? Must be in one of his DVD's but which one???

  • I agree with you . not a dvd to start from.!!!

  • @inohim I'm glad I read your post, I would have been disappointed not getting the first video. It looks like Get Started on the 5 String Banjo by David Holt would be the first one. Think I'll just use this youtube video for now.

  • the best and easiest I've seen

  • Outstanding!!! Thanks so much!

  • I love David Holt ...brilliant musician

  • Great lesson, but I do not agree with the "don't let your thumb rest on your finger." I do it that way and it's the way I learned..and it works great.

What ever is comfortable for you, as long as you can get that thumb up there in time, it's fine.

  • Of all musicians, I would think that banjo players would have a sense of humor. Great video, though. Knowledgeable. Thorough. Good stuff.

  • I had no idea Billy Corgan played banjo.

  • You realize that that is David Holt and not the pumpkins dude.

  • Ha, he does look like Billy Corgan.

  • He is a fantastic teacher.

  • I seen blokes spend hours trying to get this

and cant get to grips with it.

    Its amazing, but beautiful.

  • best bum ditty lesson
