Rick Steamboat is one of the quintessential class acts ever, both inside and outside the ring. He was probably my favourite guy from '78 on (although I was a little non-plussed when they were pushing the whole 'ninja' thing too hard in the mid-80s). One of my few mark-outs was when he won the NWA world title in '89.
yeah i heard in a radio shoot interview when steamboat actually quizzed the interviewer as to whether or not steamboat ever turned heel. the guy guessed right and steamboat jokingly said that just one time he would havve gotten a kick out of just saying "oh shut up!" to the fans to get a kick out of it but he never went heel, you're right.
@TeslaDRay yep, never went heel. Problem was, he was such a complete gentleman, and everyone knew it, both in the audience and behind the scenes, that bookers thought no one would ever buy it (they were right). I think it was Pat Patterson who told him "You could go out there and cut a guy's head off with a chainsaw, and we still couldn't get you over as a heel."
same with sting. sting teased a heel turn in wcw in late 99' but fans weren't buying it. he turend heel in tna (which i rarely watch unless he's on it) and fans still cheered him.
and compared to most older wrestlers today, steamboat is actually in competing shape. i heard he toured japan in 09' after his jericho fued, i could be wrong though.
