I think if the octopus felt truely threatened it wouldn't have inched away the way it did, it swam, settled, watched you, then swam again when it got nervous. I think it was just as interested in you as you were with it! And I think it's absolutely sweet you broke up the fight instead of provoking it like in some videos, may you have many more interesting dives, and god bless!

The mantis is a relatively peaceful species - L. maculata, I think, or the Zebra mantis. It gets big, but as a spearer, it's less aggressive as it can just swim off and dig a new hole (rather than finding one in the rock, like a smasher would). The "Boo!" stance it took when it popped up isn't predatory, it's a warning threat due to the octopus literally swimming into its home. The attack probably happened because the octopus wasn't leaving, just sitting there.
