Tchaikovsky: Best composer who ever lived. Karajan: Best conductor who ever lived. BPO: #1 orchestra in the world. Put those 3 together, and you get something purely amazing...........
Earthatic, thanks so much for these videos of the great maestro Karajan. This man was the personification of music who opened the gates of heaven to us mere mortals. His magnificent Berlin Philharmonic was but one of many orchestras he conducted but they all produced exceptional sound under his direction. Watching these videos makes me glad to be alive. Again, many thanks and happy listening.
I really appreciate how Karajan let the piano in Tchaikovsky's concerto remain discrete and clear. He did not let those brilliant flourishes in the coda become in an orchestral din. Very fine!
Alexis Weissenberg and Karajan in the Tchaikovsky Concerto are the equal and even more exciting than the memorable Cliburn/Kondrashin collaborations; hair-raising! The Tchaikovsky Fourth was always one of Karajan's greatest efforts, and here it is amazing! We shall never see your like again, Maestro.
Karajan was one of the half dozen greatest conductors who ever lived, and fortunately for us he lived well into the age of superior recorded sound. The others? Furtwangler, Mahler, Nikisch, Toscanini, and ? Stokowski? Klemperer? Walter? Szell? Reiner? Monteux? Weingartner? Koussevitzky?

Wonderful....but, please, name the soloists......
The beginning of the Tchaïkowsky Concerto is played by Kissin and the end of the 3rd Movement
by Alexis Weissenberg. I think they deserve to be named even if it's an hommage to Karajan, don't you agree?

Yes, I do agree, I will add an annotation when I have enough time,.
