People are just jealous on here because they wish that Marc had been schtooping them instead of Gloria. But oh well Marc was schtooping Gloria and not you. And now it's too late because he's been dead forever! Oh well....
Because none of you ever went to an actual church in your whole entire lives, you don't know that you just HAVE to sing and bang the hell out of a tambourine all at the same time and beat the thing like you're beating up a person on the street! It's only natural. DUH!
Wow! I was a Junior in High School and stayed up with a couple of friends to watch this very airing of the "Midnight Special". Back then there were only 2 or 3 "Rock" stations, AM and FM that you could here stuff like this.
stan harris was the director and i remember him getting really pissed because these guy went so long. it almost got cut. Marc was, well, a little high, he didn't care
I was there at this taping in 1973. We loved the song, we said the backup singers sucked then too. I'm the guy wearing the mickey mouse shirt. i went on to become a colossal flop in the music business
The annoyong female in the red with the flower in her hair doing her Yoko singing impression is Gloria Jones, Bolan's GF at the time and the woman driving the car that caused the accident that he died. In other words, she killed him.
I saw this shit the night it was shown;...I was a soph in highschool...Long live the 70s...we loved to get fuckin high as a kite and watch IN CONCERT and Midnight Special...Before the AUto TUNE KIDDIES...
OMG!! Those women...HORRIBLE!! Who told them that they could sing? Where was Simon Cowell? LOL Still love Marc!! He is one of the hottest guys ever!!!!
Too bad someone can't remix this video and drown those two bitches out completely... they add NOTHING to the song. It may be my imagination but the drummer didn't look like he was too impressed with the singers... he seems to be glaring at them in the beginning.
Tony Visconti said "the rot" began to set in once Marc got into coke big-time, along with having a major problem with booze (particularly champagne). Eventually, he corrected his downward spiral, but 15 minutes of fame had passed. He may have retrieved it, had it not been for his untimely death. This is certainly one MAJOR coked-out performance - whew!
I've got the DVD set, and the backup singers are not as loud as they seem to be on every youtube posting out there. Go figure. And it sure was a tragedy to see the essential beginnings of Bolin's end here, but the genius and the drugs were sure battling within him, even though he never really realized it. At least not until it was too late, and the many in the industry who DID see it did nothing at all to help him, even though they created the situation in the first damn place.
The downfall, right before the heroin overdose. Terrible. Black girls with no ability and Marc Bolan not realizing that he was crashing. Yet historic.
@curt8789 .... LOL!!!! Your comment was funny.......but like you said still historic! Anyway no woman should have the right to scream like that with the exception of Janis Joplin!!!!!!!
@5jerry1 jerry, he absolutely did not od. he was killed in a car wreck on september 16, 1977. he died one month to the date after elvis and just shy of his 30th birthday.
It's weird to think how it was hard for T. Rex to cross over in the US when this crowd is actually trying to get up and move what little ass they have back there! Check out 6:35
Someone must have dropped acid before getting in front of the camera.
Fun to watch though - as bad as it is. I expect Marc to burst into flames at any moment here. At about 3:00 he continues picking with no left hand on the guitar. Is he just wailing on the open E string? My band covers this song a WHOLE lot better than this. At 1:33, the drummer has this look on his face like "Couldn't you have stayed sober for JUST THIS ONE gig? C'mon - we're on TELEVISION for cryin' out loud!"
@Guitarburt I disagree. Marc doesn't seem to be the problem here. I think the backup singers and their horrible singing and tambourine played threw everybody off.
@Omegasupreme1078 They're attempting to emulate the classic backing vocals on the record, which were provided by a couple of dudes named Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo & Eddie) from The Turtles. I like how he beats up on an SG instead of his Les Paul. He did try for a real Sly and the Family Stone meets Jimi Hendrix live presentation though. It seems to me that there's a clip from around this time where he's throws glitter everwhere during his performance too.
Oh man...this must be one of the best TV performances by any band! everything about it is perfect...that is including the backing singers and their energy and screaming and DANCING and the tambourines...and Gloria Jones is smoking hot! and no need to even comment on Marc.....I could seriously watch them play this song for 2 hours without getting bored...

Would be great live song if not the women singing with Merc ... Sorry, but for me that ruins all. Just listen to the new Eminem or Jay-Z. Not the same as they were, and so Im no longer their fan.
@KISSbestfan Can't you still be a fan and appreciate their past works even though they are no longer in their prime? I think it's kind of impossible for artists who've been around for a long time to hit it out of the ballpark with every album.
@IAmPlaysWithSquirrel No no, I didnt mean Im no longer a T. Rex fan. I was also a Jay-Z and Eminem fan someday, but it was in the 90's. Now they gone commercial, and I dont want to listen to the commercial songs. Im fed up whit hearing all the same on a radio nowadays ...
So maybe its good that T.Rex decided to end, they left so many good music for us, and they didnt changed their style as well ...
@KISSbestfan I knew you were referring to Jay-Z and Eminem, and I agree that Jay hasn't been in good form for a long time now, but he's still the same guy who made "Reasonable Doubt", "The Blueprint" and "The Black Album". Can't deny that those will always remain classics, even if his new stuff is shit. And Eminem still has it, I think "Recovery" shows that he is capable of artistic growth. I wouldn't like it if he was still trying to be Slim Shady, he's way past that now.
You're so right - marc did live with gloria jones and had a son with her - he's called rolan and he has his own career in music in california. Hope he is doing fine...
T Rex is one of the most under rated rock artists in history.Classic performance. Another life cut too short. I love T Rex!

@Mufaso1000 LOL LOL It's not Soul Train but maybe it should be. If Elton John could be on it, why couldn't Marc be on it? LOL LOL

@KISSbestfan They only decided to end because Marc died
jrmetmoi 1 year ago
@jrmetmoi I know that, but I think it was at least a good decision ;) Led Zep end the same way, and they were a brilliant band !

I think one of the backing vocalists is Gloria Jones with whom Bolan had an affair and a child.

You're so right - marc did live with gloria jones and had a son with her - he's called rolan and he has his own career in music in california. Hope he is doing fine...

He does appear to be a bit blitzed out of his head. It's absolutely amazing that Marc can stand up straight nevermind sing.
