It is very awesome indeed, but I find the dissonance overwhelming. I am no bell ringer so I have no experience in these matters, but it seems there might be a better way to play these bells - with just a modicum of music theory. As it stands, it is a cacophony of sounds - not so great. I'm surprised the birds are still chirping in the end. This is not heavenly music - but it could be with a little thought.
@greenoak1 You should listen to Russian bells with Russian ears, and not "with just a modicum of music theory". Russian bells are not tuned, because the sound of a bell is its soul, and tuning a bell would change its soul. So the tones of Russian bells are not in harmonic relations according to Western musical standards. Still they can form a beautiful harmony, but it takes some time to learn to appreciate this, as is the case with any product of a foreign culture.
I want to learn how to ring bells like that! I will go to Chevetogne in the hope the monks will teach me how... At least I could then say: I now how to play an instrument! An what a BIG instrument!
Maybe, but I would rather worry about other people's ears than his. He's a pro, and he know how to protect his hearing. Mr. I. Konovalov told us that you should never stand right under the bells and your ears should be lower than the bell's cup edge. It is also recommended that bell-ringers open their mouth wide as they strike the bells, even if they are wearing hearing protection or earplugs.
cool you hear the birds singing after.. :P
