ok kan anyone help me i have these caps form a camrea that claim to be 80joules but if dat gun in dis vid is 100joules theres is something seriously wrong cause i dont get even nearly that much power so kan anyone explain and/or post a link were i kan get some of the caps that are like da ones in dis vid
All that effort and time, to make this monster looking gun, and thats all it can put out? :(
I would have tested a smaller prototype at that voltage, then when moving onto a bigger project like that, make one with at least a 1000v capacitor :)
Das mit dem Magazin ist keine so gute idee... damit fällt die konstruktion unters Waffengesetz (und mehr als 1 Joule Output wird das teil ja auch haben)
using larger projectiles will give you a larger mass to surface area so you may have more attraction between the coil and the projectile..maybe..i guess, so you get a faster muzzle velocity. somebody state otherwise if im wrong.
@TeslaCoilArbiter larger mass = larger weight, wich requires much more powerful coils, i really think big projectiles (on this early stages of development) is a bad idea.
I would really like to learn how to create my own. I have looked into it, but im unsure as to what component does what. I see that caps are measured in Volts and uF's. Could someone explain what makes it more powerful. And if I were to have a cap bank of 4 capacitors each with 200V would that be 800V? And also I don't understand what a charging bank is either. So if anyone knows of a good place to learn all of this could you show me.
@NickelxK5 check out a physic's textbook with an extensive material on the properties of electricity, there's plenty of formulas to convert joules to amperage versus the amount of power you're losing do to the resistance in the wires, ultimately just read up a shitload and use a switch that's resistant enough to not melt every shot you fire
it depends, generally you want to stick them in parallel which will mean you add all of the microFarad (uF) readings together but keep the voltage readings the same. eg you have five capacitors rated 350 volts and 2,000uF each, it will equal 10,000uf at 350 volts
has any one tried putting some low amp fuse wire on the back and front of the projectiles and have a little catch that puts some power to the fuse wire to burn it off so that when the front projectile moves forward it will bring the one from the back to the front, so no need to reload
No, they are SCR Thyristors, solid state silicon devices used for switching high amounts of power. The ones in the video are connected in parallel in order to handle huge power delivered from capacitors into coils. They are electricaly operated through gate leads.
will you put plans of this on youtube? this is one of the better guns i have seen. i have not built a coil gun before and i would like to build this one.
I'm not one to tell you any tips, but I'm so impressed. I really want to make my own, but I have no experience or materials, I think. But I do know aerodynamics. If you can get your hands on a 7.62 round or a 5.56, or even a diagram, you should try to shape your rounds like that. Even though you have sharp points, it's angle is small, so it's practically blunt. More over, try tempering a little more or the round, it'll give better penetration; as well, like someone said, shorten the rounds.
adding on to this... when you'r hardening the tip of your round you need to add carbon to it or all it's doing is changing color.. you can buy surface hardener in powder form (the safest way)or you can heat the projectile till it glows red and submerge it in used motor oil (not synthetic) this WILL cause a fire, DO NOT DO THIS IN YOUR BASEMENT. use a small pot with a lid to smother the fire
The back yard scientist does this for fun, but the concept of coil/rail guns scaled up with much more power/more coils assisting in sending a heavy payload into orbit. Imagine eliminating 80% of fuel/weight of such launches by taking the massive burden of 0-3000 MPH velocity off of the space craft, and allowing the railgun on the ground to do the work.
As for weaponizing.. It's only viable currently for large weapons. Sadly gun powder is a lot more efficient. We need to dev better batt/caps.
You should try shorter rounds. It would make your muzzle velocity much higher, at the cost of impact "weight." But a sharper and faster round will pass through that can much easier. Too short and you'll start having bouncers which is no good.
look an oversized nail gun! 8^D) Try to roof a house with this bad boy! lol j/k nice weapon man. Keep workin on that hiding the wire issue and making it more portable! Nice job!
Great weapon! I'd hardly call it portable, though :\.
I agree that it's possible that the Military can adapt these (since you know them, always improving things) although it would be nice if they DIDN'T get their hands on them. The more power the people have, the better >:)
holy shit, i am really into guns and the evolution of modern wepons and this would have too be one of the most inturesting and cool ass things i have ever seen
nah, coil (guns) are great for the lab, especially considering you can get the exact same velocity every time and such (gunpowder and other chemicals always burn slightly different) but out on a battle field, it's way to much unnecessary weight and complexity.
What? Again, where did you read this stuf with the 100J?
I said, that the bolt weight is about 40 g or so, thats a fact.
With a very light and thin piece of a steel rod I reached something about 90 m/s or so (couldnt meassure it accuratly because the very small diameter). Thats also a fact.
The electrical energy stored in the capacitors is 900J max.
But where I said something about 100J kinetic Energy?
I like the fact that you designed it to use a magazine with a straight pull bolt action. Considering that this is probably only a rough prototype, it looks like it's gonna be great farther down the line. Good work.
I have an idea, Compact its size by, number one. putting them Ohm measurer (I believe thats the yellow thing.) And all the other display electronics in a little block on your side of your ventilation piece, and number two putting all other electronics in the butt stock, and three if possible use a car battery, or a bunch of lithium in batteries (Be careful they can explode.) Thanks for your time.

dam for such a big and high teck looking gun why is it so weak.... no disrespect i just want to know because it has all those wires and its like a bb gun i was expecting it to demolish everything it hit good job though
lol even in the slow-mo you can barely make out how fast those things are moving. This is highly impressive, I wish I had the time and resources to do this. The next thing you should work on is making it portable. and a bit more ergonomical, lol. Also, does it have recoil? Thumbs-up all the way though.
Glückwünsche, und viel Glück! (That was my attempt at German lol)
excellent work, I was wondering, how accurate is it, as in, if the gun was stationary, would it hit the same spot every time? Also, could you put two sets of charges that alternate, one charging while you fire off the other one? I liked the clip you made, do you think its possible to make an automatic loader, maybe using some of the magnetic force to activate a mechanism that either pushes or pulls the next bolt into place? BTW- I liked the gun design.
Nice gun, but i wouldn't call this portable! More like movable. I really want to see someone make a coilgun but make the cap unit in a backpack so the gun can be light.
Excellent job. Hope you get the opportunity to have access to real machine tools one day, you could do wonders with a lathe & mill. You've got a good future, study physics and keep up the good work.
Awesome bolt action. I would have failed miserbly attempting that. I'm thinking about building one myself, just regular though, not anyhtin like that.
that is a huge gauss rifle can you even hold it completely horizontal while standing? It looks like you worked really hard on it, nice job. I made a coil pistol, u can make the charge from the capacitors add up by doing a paralell circuit, it gives A LOT more power.
Energie= 1/2 * Spannung hoch2 mal Kapazität in Farad
WOW that's an impressive rifle!!! I want to make one for myself and I want to ask that is this expensive or not... as for the vid I really enjoyed watching it :D You did a great job. Next time you should make an outdoor vid. and try shooting (of course with more stabilized projectiles) for 20m because as I can see it has the power
Thx. And how much is the weight of a gun like that in kg-s? Looks heavy but very nice design ;) It's similar to the one in Starship Troopers in some way :D ... Coool
I dont know if it could kill someone, I will never try it out;) You can compare it to a common crossbow.
Well, the range is not thet impressive, because the bolt is relativly slow in comparison to its weight and not stabilisated by rotation, so it flys in a very inaccurate and uncontrolled way on larger ranges. Its capable to make it stick into a phone bick at max. 10 m or so, then its nearly impossible to hit anything with the sharp end and not with the side, so its not that strong.
Do you speak Klingon per chance..... no, real good job, I about blew myself up last time I tried to make one, seems that old caps found in the dumpster are in there for a reason LOL!
portable? are you sure?

You could have others at higher speed, and the lower and sharper is bullet, it will have better piercing abilities.

Halo2maniaccc 3 years ago
its as portable as a rocketlauncher :o

Sehr gut! Einer elektrischer gewehr aufgemacht in seiner Hause!

you PORTABLE coilgun huh? xD
just jokin...
awsum job!

This is freaking amazing, you should ramp up the power and bring it to a real range
injunjoe390 3 years ago
Excellent job. Hope you get the opportunity to have access to real machine tools one day, you could do wonders with a lathe & mill. You've got a good future, study physics and keep up the good work.

Nice man!! The coil rifle doesn't look bad, it works well and it shoots, and shoots even better with Rammstein playing!

Genial. Gefällt mir.

Awesome bolt action. I would have failed miserbly attempting that. I'm thinking about building one myself, just regular though, not anyhtin like that.
xPR3CiSiONx 3 years ago
that is a huge gauss rifle can you even hold it completely horizontal while standing? It looks like you worked really hard on it, nice job. I made a coil pistol, u can make the charge from the capacitors add up by doing a paralell circuit, it gives A LOT more power.
haggywitch 3 years ago
You should try a ball bearing nice round metal.
The plans are in this months nuts and volts mag.
It also explains how to increase the caps and coils to raise the volts to increase the volocity of the round.

wie war nochmal die formel for die joule der kondis?
webdoggboy 3 years ago
E=1/2*U²*C
FunkenStreckenBrater 3 years ago
wie rechnet man das?
bin erst in der 7. aber klassenbester in mathe und physik da ich mich mit sowas beschäfftige allerdings im gymnasium^^
webdoggboy 3 years ago
Energie= 1/2 * Spannung hoch2 mal Kapazität in Farad
FunkenStreckenBrater 3 years ago
ok danke alles klar ich habs jetzt verstanden
thx!!!
webdoggboy 3 years ago
WOW that's an impressive rifle!!! I want to make one for myself and I want to ask that is this expensive or not... as for the vid I really enjoyed watching it :D You did a great job. Next time you should make an outdoor vid. and try shooting (of course with more stabilized projectiles) for 20m because as I can see it has the power
T55TankR 3 years ago
Its not that expensive, you just need some luck at Ebay and some junkjards, I think 100 would be more than enought for a really good and big cg.
FunkenStreckenBrater 3 years ago
Thx. And how much is the weight of a gun like that in kg-s? Looks heavy but very nice design ;) It's similar to the one in Starship Troopers in some way :D ... Coool
T55TankR 3 years ago
it ways just a bit over 9 kg, way to heavy.
FunkenStreckenBrater 3 years ago
I dont know if it could kill someone, I will never try it out;) You can compare it to a common crossbow.
Well, the range is not thet impressive, because the bolt is relativly slow in comparison to its weight and not stabilisated by rotation, so it flys in a very inaccurate and uncontrolled way on larger ranges. Its capable to make it stick into a phone bick at max. 10 m or so, then its nearly impossible to hit anything with the sharp end and not with the side, so its not that strong.
FunkenStreckenBrater 3 years ago
Do you speak Klingon per chance..... no, real good job, I about blew myself up last time I tried to make one, seems that old caps found in the dumpster are in there for a reason LOL!

[sarcasm]Thats what i call portable[/sarcasm]
beanmaster 3 years ago
Now, all you need is silver stakes instead of nails and you can hunt some vampires and werewolves.
Yofacestank 3 years ago
is the weight of the projectiles optimal?
make it smaller but sharper. but again im new at this how much surface area projectile is used as a core
nedelkov1234 3 years ago
but the capacitator is 900j, even tho its powerful it would be 10 times harder to make a coil gun that can actually shoot an object at 1600 joule xD
dmsanct 3 years ago
Those shots maybe hits with ONE joule.
What do you mean 900?
That's about as a .357 Magnum!
VicariousReality7 3 years ago
Are you stupid? A 357 would be about 900 KILOjoules... And a single joule would be like someone poking you...
MisterPie1 3 years ago
CHECK THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE!
My BSA Meteor air rifle shoots with 10 joules.
VicariousReality7 3 years ago
yep his right, a deagle is about 1500 joules
dmsanct 3 years ago
cool, but it needs more power in the gun
