Sonic moved past the expectations of Mario, with gameplay beyond "run/jump," some real excitement due to speed, unique set pieces, memorable (whether you like them or not), a differing story, and a more "cool" character (it WAS the 90's). I think the reason that Mario has never had a bad game is because its TOO EASY to make a good Mario game because the gameplay is too simple. Sonic set the bar higher and is more complicated, that's why when he loses, he LOSES. But when Sonic wins, he wins BIG!
