The building was built to withstand a smaller commercial liner, and not one FULLY STOCKED with fuel. Little was known about crashes like this, it had never happened on the same scale before, and thus many elements are entirely new to us. The tower did not collapse in 9.8 seconds, it burned for minutes. There has never been a steel building collapse because of fire before because there has never been a fire of this size before. Ever.

There were no secondary columns. The building was in free fall. That it took ten seconds to fall isn't surprising at all.

Its only been a year since Obama took office but I think its safe to say that he's trying to meet everyone in the middle so much that he cant get any real change passed. Most of his bills have been at best centre-left and at worst completly corporatist. But I suppose he's trying to be moderate and slowly make progress. Both presidents had to negotiate. Back then (unlike Obama) presidents looked weak if they did not bargain with congress. So Democrats were in power under Bush.......please prove me wrong.

It was cakewalk for for Bush, because he either had other people make his decisions for him (Cheney, Rove, on occasion Powell), or he just made shit up as he went. Obama writes a good deal of his own speeches and doesn't need to use a teleprompter every six seconds, which means he has them committed to memory. Bush skipped through his two terms like they were a lark. Obama spends every hour thinking about how best to proceed, and he only took two weeks off for vacation. He takes it seriously.

The tower did not collapse in 9.8 seconds, it burned for minutes. There has never been a steel building collapse because of fire before because there has never been a fire of this size before. Ever.

It went from || to )( once the steel ceased to support the buildings IMMENSE weight. You can even see the columns bending outwards from the sides of the tower, completely gone, no support. There were no secondary columns. The building was in free fall. That it took ten seconds to fall isn't surprising at all.

The point I am trying to make is it's easy 70 years after to say we should have done this or that, but that's no guarantee things would have worked out any differently.
Britain was in no shape for a war in 1936. Our army and airforce would not have been upto the challenge. Only the navy was in any fit shape.
Also we had barely come out of the worst recession the wrold had known up to that point.
Finally memories of the slaughter of WW1 were still fresh.
