There needs to be a side project. Kirk and Robert are part of Metallica and should stay. But how about a side project? Hit The Lights. James Hetfield- vocals, Lars Ulrich- drums, Lloyd Grant and Dave Mustaine- guitars, and Ron McGovney- bass. They can do one album and one tour playing only songs from their album, Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning and covers of bands like Diamond head. Then go back to their respective bands.
