friedman is the reference for chopin mazurkas. nobody showed us such interesting interpretations of these pieces. he recorded lots of them on 78 tours shellaks. hope one will upload them soon.... heard them 30 years ago at a collector of old recordings and was immediatedly fascinated.... unfortunately I lost the copy of these recordings he gave me
@Lity10 I mean simply that Friedman's playing is so full of life and rythym, and the Rubenstein set, though correct in every way lacks any sense of an underlying life force or rythmic drive. They seem stale, careful and entirely of a studio mindset, and so I refer to them as 'The dance of the living dead' mazurka set. That's all. Like most comments on youtube it's just an opinion.
@Lity10 I think it's o.k. but rather unimaginative. I should warn you that my tastes in Chopin mazurka playing put Friedman and Horowitz at the top of the pile. Also I like the rather angular elegance of Sauer and the and the patrician playing of Rosenthal.
Fabulous!!! Wonderfully earthy mazurka rhythm--poetic touches--beautiful sound--how Friedman makes his mazurkas dance! What a tonic to hear these performances, bursting with style, personality and spontaneity, in contrast to the sterile playing we would hear today!
THIS is a Mazurek ! Thrilling ! Less gracious than Rubinstein but a lot more thrilling ! Both are genius.

Two of my favorite mazurkas, played with so much feeling! Thank you for sharing these wonderful recordings!

Apart from a few untidy patches and little self indulgence here and there, these performnces are brimming with nationalistic character and verve.

Beats the HELL out of Rubensteins 'dance of the living dead' studio recordings.

@aardvaark069 okay, I do understand what you mean though I partly disagree :p

@aardvaark06 I see. I also like Horowitz very much. In the end, it's just a matter of taste.. Sauer is also good imo!
Kind regards
