  • 2:19... Soul Glo.

  • he was friendly with seasick stevie

  • very impressive standing with hands in pockets etc

  • It's definitely all R.L. I spent some time with him in the summers of both '91 & '92... he even asked me to drive his tour van. Great guy, great player!

  • Ain't no British Invasion gonna copy this and do it justice. Ain't no tea and crumpet man gonna fuck with moonshine and grits. That's what generations of pain and poor will give you, hard music that'll make you want to rejoice and sing. Picadilly ain't the highway cross between 49 and 61, this is America's music... black blues man is the prodigal son.

  • @jram1980 Youve obviously never been to "Britain", though you clearly mean England. Piccadilly isnt a highway (plus theres more than one Piccadilly in England), we dont all sit and drink tea and eat crumpets, and we have a lot of poor areas. Get over yourself. These men inspired a whole movement in a completely other country, and continue to inspire new generations. Thats something to be proud about, not elitist.

  • @MrUnknown07 Hey yall gave us Black Sabbath, and thats good enough for me. I'm actually blown away by some of the stuff that comes outta the UK. Iron maiden, zeppelin, all revolutionary for their time. However, we do have Dio and hendrix.

  • bass player ? its all played on one guitar .

  • its a very fat bass sound for a telecaster is all I'm saying.

  • if ya dig rl burnside check out my vids too! cheers..

  • great video, thank you for sharing this! Burnside is one of my favorites :)

  • The bass is in his thumb. He's thumbing the bass line.

  • Eurithmic guy?

  • sounds exactly like the black keys song i gor mine

  • @themanchild27 Other way 'round

  • Fender Telecaster

  • SUBSCRIBE

  • r l reminds of a very dear friend of the family we got to know living on Rockford, IL's west side. sweetest guy you ever met... just don't cross 'im!

  • Go easy on Dave Stewart no.1 cause if it wernt for him we wouldnt be able to see this absolute treasure and no.2 ,come on now you probably looked kind of foolish back in the 80's I know I sure as fuck did.Padded shoulders, fuuuck!!!!

  • It's Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. RL teaches him long-haired doney in the next scene, it's friggin' awesome. This movie was EXCELLENT!!!

  • werd

  • was that johnny depp

  • no but Johnny Depp liked it !!

  • @windmilldwellers that is Dave Stewart

  • @windmilldwellers Dave Stewart

  • Is Dave Stewart from the Eurythmic.

  • This film is what made me go to MS in the early 90's to meet RL. I still think this version of Jumper is one Burnside's greatest recordings. I still stay in touch with the Burnside and Kimbrough families. Despite thorny issues of race, class and exploitation, If not for this film and Fat Possum records, none of us might have known about the Hill Country Blues. In his last yrs., RL made good money from this notoriety (& the Sopranos)

  • @hambonewillie

What was RL like as a person?

  • @karl198 R.L. was just like you'd expect him to be-he was a very positive, no-nonsense man who never got ruffled by anything or anybody-he just rolled with the flow. When I first met him he was living in an old house by Junior's juke joint on Hwy. 4 in Marshall County. He had a huge family and virtually no money. Years later after he was famous, and by local standards rich, he was exactly the same person-very accessible and great to be around.

  • @karl198 But the biggest thing I remember about RL was the utter joy that inhabited his body when he was playing music for a good crowd-his smile was as wide as the Mississippi and he just emitted positive energy that was infectious. He was one of a kind and is greatly missed by everyone who knew him-and thousands more who never got the chance to meet him

  • @skooterSkooter I'm sorry you never heard of RL you have been missing out. I will agree with one thing slideharp said, you have to go out and find it, and you can hear RL on the radio- college radio. Mainstream music is spoon fed to the lazy. Real music fans dig deep to find the truth. RL was the truth. Fuck fame, fuck fortune, fuck MTV, fuck the radio. Play music, listen, feel, love music.

  • @Red1Eyed3Devil I second that emotion!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Your sir are retarded" ......Don't you mean You?........Sometimes it is better to appear stupid, than to speak and remove all doubt!....

  • good stuff

  • your sir are retarded...

  • Well stated @ Slideharp!

  • @IIICOLDPLAYIII. Thanx. P.S. I like Coldplay too!

  • were is the rest of this movie on here????

  • Don't think you'll find it up here but it's called "Deep Blues" and it's available on DVD but this is the only footage of R.L in the documentary. (Apart from a section where Dave Stewart is trying to learn "Long Haired Doney" and a solo version of "Long Haired Doney" in the extra features menu).

  • Thanks for posting, have and always will be influenced by the genius of R.L Burnside! RIP

  • RIP RL, the master of Mississipi blues.. He was a genius..

  • All respect to Dave that he made this production possible of the grat R:L Burnside

  • I know what you mean about Dave Stewart but I think it is possible that the documentary from which this clip is taken might not have been made without his input. If I remember rightly the documentary was called "Deep Blues" and Dave Stewart was one of the producers or executive producers. If that documentary had never been made we wouldn't be able to see this wonderful jaw dropping footage.... It is one of my favourite things ever - thanks for putting it up.

  • The thumb on his left hand is muting the low e string causing you to believe there is a bass player hiding in a shack.

  • so is he miming or is the bass player hiding inside the shack?

  • Is in the washer machine ....

  • why did I get a thumbs down? I love this guy. I was hoping some smart arse could tell me for real if he's actually playing the bass with his mitts. If he is then that's just genius. Only the bass sounds well full, not one you'd get from a tele.

  • @dharmashooter there is no bass

  • @dharmashooter

He's playing the bass line with his thumb on the low E.

  • @dharmashooter there is no bass player in this song.

  • @dharmashooter No.He's playing the top G string with a thumb pick, strumming with the rest.

  • @dharmashooter - there's no bass player. Just him.

  • great vid thanks for posting this. and im guessing dave stewart is the white dude with the shades, line beard, and the cool look of self-conscious constipation on his face.

  • Ohh yeahh...

  • The long shadow that should be followed is from R.L. to Dave...that shot was really bullshit and he should be pink faced, especially since R.L. will be remembered more than he.

  • is the volume down people or is it just me?

  • I know himat this day: Absoloutly awesome!

  • Great stuff. Thanks for providing the video!!

  • Dave Stewart definately looks like an outsider in this clip.

  • When was this footage taken?Late 80's/Early 90's? I visited RL and his family at the same house before it was lost to a fire. My friends and and I met all the family in the video. Thank you for this footage. It brought back a lot of memories.

  • this was from a documentary that the guitarist from the eurythmics did called Down South Blues or Deep South Blues or something like that.

The white dude in the video clip is the guy who made the documentary.

He and R.L. played a song together and the white dude was really giving it his all and R.L. looked over at his friends and kinda laughed.. It is FUNNY!!

  • OldSkaterGuy,

Thank you for the info. Do you know where i can view the whole documentary? Thanks in advance.

    All the Best,

    Paul

  • I love the part at 0:30 when the guy's groovin to the music!!

  • well said

  • Bad-ass. Just a droning, hypnotic one-chord groove that exudes as much power and soul as any music EVER made. Long live the Delta Blues.

  • I do totally agree with you. RL was a very nice man way beyond any fashion-stupid-materialistic bull but..... thanks to him he's here with us and I thank him for it!!

    Love blues big time too.

  • is he in a real-life, all-man denim gang?

  • dave stewart was in a band called the eurythmics.totally doesnt make sense, but for some reason gay british men like old black guys with guitars.

  • Hahaha! Hilarious! I couldn't agree more!

  • Eric clapton and Jimi Hendrix were like buck brothers when it came down to the blues.

  • the story that was told to me was that on jimi's british debut, i think the stones took him there on tour?clapton was on the bill and at that time was considered the best guitar player, hands down. the brits hadnt ever seen hendrix. for some reason jimi had to borrow one of clapton's guitars.and once the crowd saw JH play,EC was no longer considered the best.they were in total amazement. as was EC's girl, cause she hooked up w/Jimi that night and hendrix apperently forgot to return the strat. (?)

  • the contrast between the rich and poor indeed. Lovely and fine example of the poor man's plight and how he copes...

    Thx for posting!

  • haha, stewert really does look like a twit just standing there and shuffling. But, hey, he can play a hell of alot better than I can so kudos to him!

  • Makes me wanna sell everything, pack up and head to the hill country to play some blues. Texas blues doesn't have a 1/10 of the feel the Mississippi blues has. This is the real deal. Also, I love the jerry curl

  • I disagree with that comment. I think that Blind Lemon, "Funny Papa" Smith, Texas Alexander and Lightnin' Hopkins, as well as Mance Lipscomb, had quite a lot of feeling!

  • Is that Johnny Depp standing in the dirt?

  • or is it Tim Robbins?before he turned into a tub-o-lard.

  • or is it Bill Clinton ??

  • lol @ Dave Stewart groovin' to the music.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • just some nice chuggin blues

  • I'm pretty sure it's Open G shape tuned down to B

  • Not sure what you mean?

    Open G tuning? but lowered

    down a minor 6th? That's

a long way down. Sound like

    an E drone to me. . .

  • This is my favorite Burnside tune, anyone know what tuning he is using here?

Not enough bluesmen left, just posers rap bullsh*t, I'd drive all the way from Cal to mississippi to hear the real thing.

  • u wanna check on here for seasick steve. hes a true bluesman currently taking the uk by storm. he has been likend to rl burnside. he's an ex hobo from mississippi.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice! *****

  • effortlessly superb.

  • My RL tribute on amplified harp is on my YouTube site

  • Greatest music in the universe

  • Too bad the video stops where it does. It great to see the next few minutes where RL has apparently a great time jamming with DS.

  • It doesn't get any realer than this. I wanna go Holly Springs MS, R.L, Junior, Mcdowell, Feathers, they must have something magical in the water there other than the mud.

  • the pedo in the cowboy boots would be the guy who made the documentary this footage came from

  • This film Deep Blues will be screened at the Deep Blues Music and Film Festival July 18-20, 2008 in Minneapolis/St Paul MN.

  • who's the pedo in the cowboy boots?

  • this is quite an intelligent creation for a documentary. in a way we have to thank dave stewart for putting it together but... but...

  • Dam that's good!How the hell I miss this?

  • I am related to him,the lady they show (21 secs in)is his wife...,she's my Aunt...

  • I think im related to him - My second name is Burnside too :S

  • I remember these motherfuckers. i'll miss jesse mae for real... goddamn.

    i just got really sad.

  • one of my favorite clips from the "deep blues" documentary.

Check out my video "cast out" on my youtube page, it is done in this similar riff north mississipi style.

  • This is the best... No matter where your from, if you can feel this -- your alright with me.

  • Wilo65 It's unfortunate that you couldn't leave your prejudism asside in your comment box for the sake of music. They both come from the heart love and hate-RL's love came through his music, your hate comes out through your words. Why did you have to go there and ruin this wonderful clip?

  • sorry,,,,ur right.

  • what a great voice for an old cat. a roots blues man with serious chops... thanks for posting this

  • dave stewart may not look like the burnsides, but they are pretty much the coolest looking family on the planet. from what i understand, he paid for 'deep blues'. do you really think they'd have him at their house if he wasn't sincere?

  • a big thank you to dave stewart for producing this excellent documentary

  • That's how you do....oh yeahhhh

  • The english are coming the english are coming! god hes studpid. Sonny Boy Williamson played over in enland once and came back home and said "The english wanna learn how to play the blues real bad, and thats just how they play it, real bad."

  • R.L is the true blues musician of all times, goddammit, nobody makes such sounds as he does.

  • awesome

  • RL Burnside is a ledgend; he always sounds amazing

  • all the dave stewart haters probably don't know that he co-produced the great blues documentary "deep blues" by robert palmer (the journalist and producer) in which junior kimbrough und burnside were featured.

  • yes we know.Thank you.

  • whats the deal with Dave Stewart...why the hate here?

  • RL owns. Thanks for the vid.

  • I had never heard of this dude before coming accross him on youtube - Man this is some outstanding music - Wicked, Im off to buy a cd or 2 tomorrow!!!

  • He was a very very kind man,,,pretty sick on his last years. He recorded a few techno-blues stuff on the last 2 years i guess(guess that was to make some extra money)

  • the "techno" stuff you refer to to is the work of his grandson who played drums with RL during the last 5 or so years he toured.

  • i keep waiting for someone to smack dave stewart

  • Wow that was awsome! How did you obtain a piece like that?

  • Great footage, but I had to crank the sound way up to hear it.

  • Stewart made a film with Robert Palmer (the blues author not singer) about Kimbrough, R.L, Big Jack Johnson, etc. I am no Dave Stewart fan really but he is sincere in his appreciation for the deep blues. Plus that film is great.

  • Great! Don't you have more? Or any Jessie Mae videos?

  • no man....sorry. just one little one in her house already posted for me. What i do have is a looooong recording with her talking and singing and ....like always ...HAVING FUN !!!

She was so beautiful in so many ways.

  • Great stuff...RL knew how to work a chord for feeling good music...

  • Thank god there still a few that really know how to appreciate his work.

    Thank you man !!

  • A master
