This revelatory biography of Folies-Bergere dance Josephine Baker (1906-1975) is a study of struggle, triumph, and tragedy. Abandoned at birth, she battled racism, poverty, and sexism to become an international star.
Great idea but unfortunately I can't fave it as you stuck a load of silence on the start with the words you wrote. I do think that YT IS a place to listen to music as well as watch video, you can't always give undivided attention to a screen whereas you can listen whilst other stuff happens... nice idea though as I said.
Wow. That brunette is on FIRE! Seriously energetic and unique. Full of energy and creativeness. I know not a thing about dancing - but that woman made me want to LEARN!
Don't you just love the ladies dancing in this, they're so full of life and vitality. The sad part is, these lovely women are either in their 80's or 90's or no longer with us, wherever they are, bless em. Hey, but thats life, nothing lasts forever.
Sometimes it takes several years of the Dan to come back to a song and realize you missed one that you listened to before and forgot how good it was...
I guess I've become even more appreciative of their style :x
Great song, love it! Steely Dan aren't my normal thing musically but they are different and love how they mix the jazz and reggae influence into rock, damned good! Like your video, and I'm female, the dance rhythm fits the song great and catches the spirit of it. Bit off for folks to be so insulting about it. And shame some sad juvenlie losers have to make the expected sexist comments ... yaaawn! They probably can't get a woman and keep Kleenex in business pmsl.
The idea is derivative, but what isn't on youtube? My beef is simply: Terrible terrible editing! You could have gotten the dancers on the beat if you had simply tried a bit harder. D+ if I'm being charitable
Interesting that the last pre-music note was "a bad dream" Long ago I heard someone comment that Steely Dan's music gives you the feeling that life is just a bad dream. The more I thought about it the more I agreed.
Top banana record, love the hilarious lyric, love the kickass bass and the wonderful Dean Parks guitar playing. A hit in Britain in '77. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.
Hey Dainel im afraid you will always have' haters' thats why the world never has or never will have peace some people would argue the sea wasnt salty.i like what you done mate m,ost whats most improtant is what you feel about it and that's all thats counts at the end of the day regardless of what others think, an yway you could always meet up with them and just punch then striaght in the face, does solve things but makes you feel good : )
For the people that hated what i tried here i must say one thing: Youtube is not a place to listen to MUSIC, its a place to show videos, try outs, experimental things and etc. Its not a commercial place. That's why i made this video, for people that already knows the song and can accept a new view on something. And by the way, my initial inspiration was the videos that Steely Dan played in a tour years ago while this song was played. So i think they liked what i did here!!! haha
@danielaragao This is a Superb song;equally so are the lyrics. They're meant to be extremely funny. Nice try, but this Video has Absolutely Nothing to do with the Song's Content. However; Cheers for the decent sound quality !!
@danielaragao Dude, you did a great job. Steely Dan I always listened to while doing home work. Watching this video was awesome. Very creative....much better than doing Algebra. I used to listen front to back. "just turn it over and drop the stylus"!! LOL
@danielaragao Hated it? Are you kidding? This is great! By the way, the dancer with the feather in her headband......if bodies were rated 1-10....she is a solid 10.0000 A gold standard.
Hey, man I forgot to say thanks for this video especially the section where the two dance, which is the inspiration behind a dance scene in a movie I'm producing. I never would have seen it if I didn't love this song and you didn't make this video. Here's to you and may you consider yourself brilliant by association. I did like the couple dancing though, at least they had some rhythmic flow to their movements that matched the cadence of the song. Apart from that...don't give up the day job. SERIOUSLY!
Top right hand corner of your screen you will see 3 little boxes with diferent markings. Put you cursor onto the one on the left and left click your mousepad. You will now note that the 'crappy video' has disapeared, leaving you to open something else a bit more enertaining
@ouii8 and we had to read some crap and wait 40 seconds after we had already press Play. Imagine, how annoying it would be, if every uploaded video this this!

OOps! I was editing the message when it accidentally got posted. I meant to say that the song is a big mistake geographically speaking......is like mistaking the culture of China with the culture of India.
Anyway, I'm sure it has never been noticed since all we care is the song, not the lyrics. However I don't agree wit the comment posted "classic word of wisdom".
It's a Steely Dan song, not a National Geographic Special...this is the weirdest, and one of the finest, of Steely Dan songs. Not something you'd find yourself humming on your drive home from work (and if you do find yourself humming this on your drive home from work, Seek Immediate Medical Attention!), but...
Cool song & video. I saw Walter last night here in Maui. Just a humble observation: I happen to be a geography major & lived in the Dominican Republic, where they dance merengue and get quick divorces. The song should have been "dominican divorce" instead of Haitian. Both are different nations & different cultures that share the island of Hispaniola. Is like calling Chinese but the song itself is a big geography blunder, not a "clssic word of wisdom"
one of the all time great songs. i remember buying this single which introduced me to Steely Dan. i was only 14 and my school mates were all into Yes, Genesis etc. cack.
I think squabhole meant they hated playing live. Because being total perfectionists they couldn't create their studio sound which led to the break-up of Baxter, etc and zero tours for years.
it is said that they grew tired of playing live due to the flakiness of some of the musicians they recruited to play with....after they got back together recently they found with truly professional musicians it is fun now to tour and play live.
You are right and for good reasons which will become obvious when you watch "The making of Peg"
In fact the only members of Steely Dan are Becker and Fagen, everyone else we hear on their recordings was either brought in for that track or themselves multi-tracked playing more than one instrument. it's impossible to recreate this live.
However this takes nothing away from their genius, and remain the finest, most sophisticated composer/arranger/producer/studio artists of all time.
I think you mean "The making of Aja". Anyway, I totally agree with you. Aja followed by The Royal Scam are by far my favourite albums but it was unbelievable how Aja was put together and probably the most interesting music documentary I've ever seen.
Recent live Youtube posts show John Herington on lead guitar playing this track where originally Becker, himself, used the talk-box on the original - strange...but as you say, nothing can be taken from their genius.
Sorry but Daleks is right. Dean Parks played the solo before the final take but Becker memorised it and added the talk box himself. The guitar part featuring the talk box is played by Becker and not Parks although it is Parks' solos.
Exotic mental imagery of too much, too young and the potion that kills a conventional marriage. True love between a man and woman thrives not on all the fast feelings, but rather the slow feelings of love and respect. God help the rich and famous and the narcisstic. They can't tell the difference between boredom and peace.
Chevy Chase once stated , after he and the band became famous separately.... and jokingly i might add....."I used to play drums in a very bad jazz band."
Was that Denny Diaz soling, cant remember, man thats gotta be one of the most soulful experiences, that second guitar solo to the out is absolutely divine, I remember my older brother playing this album when I was growing up....always loved this particular piece.
No. It was actually Walter Becker using the "memorised" solo that Dean Parks put to it the day before only using a Talk Box as an fx. I've loved the 2 solos for decades. Denny Diaz didnt feature on Royal Scam.
Trivia - Steely Dan was originally Denny Diaz's band.
Wow, Becker can play some bad bass too, doesn't he play Bass on goucho also...? Credo, another smidge of potentially daft triv, wasn't Cevy Chase in the original lineup also
good job dewd--and you don't need to respond to losers who just get off on tearing other people down

Couldn't play live..? I have seen them five times and have to disagree with you totally, better with Cornelius then without thou...

one of the most underrated bands of all time,x-cept couldn't play live
squabhole 3 years ago
you are speaking strictly for yourself, i saw them live in 1973 and they were superb
likesspice73 3 years ago
I think squabhole meant they hated playing live. Because being total perfectionists they couldn't create their studio sound which led to the break-up of Baxter, etc and zero tours for years.
DaleksFromSkaro 3 years ago
it is said that they grew tired of playing live due to the flakiness of some of the musicians they recruited to play with....after they got back together recently they found with truly professional musicians it is fun now to tour and play live.

DaleksFromSkaro 3 years ago
big mistake you made dude; its Dean Parks on the talk box...
eman13007 3 years ago

Was that Denny Diaz soling, cant remember, man thats gotta be one of the most soulful experiences, that second guitar solo to the out is absolutely divine, I remember my older brother playing this album when I was growing up....always loved this particular piece.
psyne000 3 years ago
No. It was actually Walter Becker using the "memorised" solo that Dean Parks put to it the day before only using a Talk Box as an fx. I've loved the 2 solos for decades. Denny Diaz didnt feature on Royal Scam.
Trivia - Steely Dan was originally Denny Diaz's band.

this is one of my favorite steely's..other then pearl of the quarter and monkey in your soul.
that1guy1980 3 years ago
Wow, Becker can play some bad bass too, doesn't he play Bass on goucho also...? Credo, another smidge of potentially daft triv, wasn't Cevy Chase in the original lineup also
