Such a beautiful song and such a nice rendition. I'm happy to be seeing Guthrie play soon and hopefully B.Sheehan. Lucky me.........Jeff Beck last year!!!........ I'm in guitar heaven!!
I've come to the conclusion that the only reason those chromatic notes he plays all the time sound so good is because they only exist for him... He has the whole alphabet while we're stuck with A through G#
If I had Mr. Govan's technical expertise I'd be a force of nature. Like B.B., I have stupid fingers (his words). Anyway, I thought Stevie Wonder wrote this tune - I could be wrong.
I dislike when people have to discuss how "They are technical but have no musicality" sometimes when fellow musicians play a piece that they themselves did not write, they do it because they are paying homage to that song, and the best way they can pay homage to the song is to at least give the song the justice of playing it their own way. I seriously doubt that Sheean and Guthrie were attempting to make a statement by playing this song, aside from the simple statement of paying homage.
There are very few bassists out there with sort of amazing ability that Sheehan has. He's way up there as far as my inspirations as a bassist go, for sure!
Mmmm. Funny - Jeff Beck is a very technical player, but he always manages to create a sense of melancholy in this piece. These are great players, but too many notes & horrible guitar sound. Doesn't work for me.
Man they should maybe try for a long term band/ project together. What an incredible trio. Surely this could raise the profile of the musicians to be closer to being household names.
I like that Guthrie didn't shred all over this like I was afraid he would, he didn't stray away from the elegance and beauty of the song like so many guitarists do. Jeff Beck though is the one I listen to though if I want to hear this song. Jeff has the nicest sound.
theres a reason why Guthrie Govan is a god when it comes to improvising. He knows all the implicated chords and therefore also what scales and dominants he should and could use. PLUS he's got an amazing sixth sense for what sounds amazing. There is a explanation for this... he has been playing guitar since he was 3... no other word for a guy like that than Spectacular. period...
In the Concert of Croosroads i don't remenber what year was that concert Jeff Beck play this song and he has a girl plaiying the bass and the fucking girl does a amazing bass solo but of course this is much better!
@fraud1980 ..you have a bad ear then , they pitch of each note was perfect and the wah is very typical guitar effect you can't say it was bad unless he is using a crappy pedal.
I absolutely adore Guthrie, but somehow still prefer Beck on this track. Maybe it's because he's always got Vinnie behind him on the drums, or maybe it's his tone. Who knows? Who cares?
The level of musician ship on the stage is sooooo exciting to behold. I love how Billy treats the bass like a guitar in the sense that he treats it melodically, and as a solo instrument. Guthrie on the other hand is flawless in the way he makes this song his own. It makes sense for Guthrie to do Jeff Beck covers, because they are both unorthodox players...
this guy just conditioned himself to be the best. Practice the right way for hours a day for years and MAYBE you get what he has.... the ability to be play what you think but without actually having to think about it... its funny how when you try to improvise you go over the same licks youve been playing for years... and this guy only hits the right notes all the time... hes clearly getting something out of his head straight to the guitar and not worrying about it
ive been playing over 20 years and this guy inspires me to become better...incredible (govan)...also;; credit to sheehan another great musician....i had the pleasure of meeting a couple of times with mr big .
I hate how Guthrie can outplay virtually every shredder alive, but still manages to play extremely soulfully, even when speeding by at 15 notes per second. That's talent that you can't learn.
He's up there with Steve Morse, Steve Howe, Al di Meola and John McLaughlin as a truly exceptional guitarist. It's the improv that sets these guys apart.
No, no , no The other day i had an spiritual session so we call GG spirit and told me that in real he is not God he is his song (yeah like Jesus), that was the 1st thing he told me, second he told me that i can continue seeing people playing and admire them cause i'm his father but i can't notice yet, so in 2011 a curious thing will happen so i will have a mysterous power in my hands(my fingers) .. xD
@jakeisdead really? i'm kinda the reverse. i mean don't get me wrong, billy's the shit and everything, but guthrie's just on a whole other level musically, in my opinion.
Probably so that he can channel his signal through two different settings and get two distinctive sounds simultanously, like an electric one and an acoustic one if he has a piezo pickup in his bass as well. I'm not quite sure though.
GG must be an alien. An anagram of 'guthrie govan' is 'guitar veg hon'. Now, veg hon is the name of a distant solar system. I just made that up. But, seriously, anyone who can improvise so flawlessly cant be totally human. Mabey he's a robot from the future sent back in time to humiliate every other guitarist! PS. The best anagram of 'billy sheehan' I came up with was 'Ah belly shine'. Yes I'm sad.
@willfoxell. Disagree with the alien connection. Do agree he isn't human though. That's because he's God. I know this because he spoke to me. I asked him what happens to me when I die. He replied 'ugo gitar hevn', which also happens to be an anagram. Those words were of great comfort to me. I would have asked the 'hilly banshee' the same question, but I am mistrusting of Irish mythical spirit creatures. You're not sad, just incorrect.
I totally agree and you would be right if they were playing an orthodox "cover". But, they're both purposefully putting their own spin on JB's version, so it sounds different but I think just as good.
In my opinion, very few bass-players can bust out a solo and have it work out in favour of the song, especially on a tune such as this. But Billy Sheehan does it very well.
ah, cmon, the way he plays out in insane (Guthrie)
Anyway, the more i listen to metal player playing something which is not metal (Friedman, Broderick, Loureiro and now Sheenan) the more I think that metal actually kills talent.
What a waste of thought... Metal requires talent, but it's a specific talent. To play this, you need more than just a familiarity with the instrument. I know more "metal players" that are adept in other styles, than players of other genre's that can "fake" playing metal.
