this is about growing up blue collar-I totally identify wih this. so many of my friends got pregnant in high school-it was life changing &there were consequences. not welfare..I got out of the town asnd went on to college-but not many of my friends made it that far-even out of the "valley"back then people took responsiblity for thier actions. they did not expect welfare to pay for thier babies. they manned up. Amazingly more than 40 years later so many of those couples ARE STILL together.

Later, after the impromptu marriage ceremony, it was a place they went to feel some kind of solace. Later, still after all expections have vanished, it is still the place that they go to even though the narrator knows, "the river is dry." Best I can explain it LoL.

It's really about a river, a place where they went and dived, a place where they were happy, but later live like the river dry's up. And they go back because they know they just to be happy.
