I've heard others wash their hair with only water and a brush, it sounded a bit extreme to me in the beginning even though it does make sense that sweat is water based and soluble and oils are meant not to be washed off completely...
You know what's another really good movement that's good for the environment, your body, and saves you thousands and thousands of dollars?? Menstrual cups.
@heytheredenorah Some people ONLY use conditioner. And they do consider themselves part of the No Poo movement. Way I look at it is .. OPTIONS. We can question our beliefs and see what FITS for us in the moment. Experiment and enjoy!
I was using acv and bs for the first 3-4 months, im now at 10 months with water only.
A tip that works for me right now whenever I have a slightly oily scalp, itchy scalp or even a little dandruff is Aloe Vera Gel!! The purest stuff I could find at my local health food store was Jason brand.
I rub it on my scalp a couple mins before taking a shower, rinse it off in the shower (rinses easily) and thats it.
A tip for dryness while poo-free is taking some oil (sweet almond, grape seed, apricot, coconut, some use olive oil, but i find its too heavy) and applying it into the tips of the hair. It's important that you don't put it near your roots, otherwise you will have a very bad hair day.
Thanks for the advice. I have been transitioning into the no shampoo method. However I was planning on dying my hair next week, and wasn't sure if I could still continue washing my hair with vinegar?
I have a question, I have been using no poo method, only two times so far, with baking soda and vinegar, but my hair is now so dry, (it was dry before, but less) and feels like sponge and dirty as straw. Is this normal? Is it part of the adjustment process, or I have been using inadequate amounts, or rinsing wrong?
@sandynow -- for me, the dry straw like feeling was that I was not getting the baking soda all out of my hair. What works well for my daughter and I is using a fine tooth comb IN the shower. I comb through the baking soda solution. Then follow with the vinegar solution and comb that through also. Then rinse very well. If my hair still feels a big ... off ... I use straight vinegar. Vinegar conditions the hair and makes sure to dissolve any residue left behind by the baking soda. Good Luck!
Great ! Things I have used are, 20 mule team borax(similar to baking soda) , and powdered citric acid diluted for rinse/conditioner. One can also use aloe juice for gel. Or a salt water mixed with the aloe for gel.
My hair responds beautifully to no-poo, but may I ask a question? I notice you say you wash your hair every day.
Most other sources on no-poo say that baking soda is far too drying to use so frequently. Have you found any dryness/damage from daily washing? I have oily hair and sweat heavily, and really need to wash daily, but I am concerned baking soda is too harsh for daily use. I would be really grateful to hear your opinions! Thanks so much! XXX
@darscilla -- congratulations on finding something that works for you. :) My hair also tended to be oily and I do need to wash it everyday. I've never had a problem with over drying if I follow with the vinegar rinse. For me that seems to be the key. On occasion, I will even use straight vinegar on my hair. It keeps my hair soft and shiny. Good luck!!!

you look soo funny the way you look down and then suddenly up, and with all those expressions you make with your face! and it's also funny that you insisted on making the whole video in the garden in order to look serene and peaceful, while on the outside all hell's breaking loose in the street!!!
I have really strange hair. I get oily quick, but I also have dry-scalp. I have no idea what to do, but I've never appreciated the way shampoo smells, feels, or what it leaves my hair like. I concur completely with the statement at 8:00 or so, that certain products have become dogmatic in their use, without any real validation of that ubiquity. I wasn't expecting highly rational logic in what appears to be an "alternative" channel.
Not the most entertaining video but imformative. Ive been on the no poo method for about 2 weeks now. But the places that I got my information from had said tha conditioner was enough to clean your hair. I dont know about other people but this is not the case for me. SO I really like you baking soda and vinager idea and will try it in the morning. So wish me luck and hopefully I'll stay witht he no poo too. =3
I tried this for the first time today and am totally surprised how clean my hair feels! I am so pleased. I went in super greasy and came out feeling clean and my hair feels and looks almost better than it ever did before! Feels like this is the right thing to do for hair...no need for any nasty chemicals. Thanks. :)
@CherryXPistol -- Good question. I hope you write back and let us know how it goes for YOU. My own sense is that this may have to do with why your hair is that greasy. For my own body, it seemed that the shampoo was actually making more of a problem because it caused my hair to release MORE OIL as I was stripping away all of the natural oils and my system tried to overcompensate. So for me, the baking soda works much better and my hair is less oily than before.
Can someone please tell me what happens if you don't use the baking soda or vingerar? So, no hair products whatsoever, just water. Will your hair look greasy or not?
@Praguedive ~ regarding the WO (Water Only) method of No Poo, this seems to be a matter of individual body chemistry if it will work for you or not. There are lots of people who have been doing WO for years and their hair is clean and healthy. In my own personal experience, it does not work for me with the length of hair that I have and the environment where I live. Could be the pollination in the air, could be the natural oils my hair has. But for me I need to use the BS and V. Good luck!
WARNING!!! DO NOT USE VINEGAR OR LEMON ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE COLORED HAIR!!!! I did and it turned my neutral blond into brassy yellow. NOT ATTRACTIVE. It does work though if you have natural hair.
@footbinder Thank you for the warning-- I am getting ready to try this and I have color treated hair ... I will be sure to do a test strand with lemon juice before using all-over my head
After a day of beautiful hair from this method, I realized I DO smell like a salad. Every time i turned my head or stood up, there was the vinegar smell. I even used tea tree oil in the rinse and smelled the vinegar all day. At the gym this was MORE prevalent. And when I washed with my regular shampoo, I STILL smelled it eventhough I used less than 2 tbs. I guess I can try even less, however my scalp smells, and my hair was conditioned perfectly so I don't know how less will benefit me.
@GixxxerKim --- Hmmmm. That's interesting. I don't notice a vinegar scent ... then again I love the smell of vinegar so I may not be really aware. I imagine it may make a difference what kind of vinegar you are using. Most of the forums like apple cider vinegar. But I tend to use simple white vinegar and rinse it very very well,. I think it probably took me five weeks to come up with what worked well for my hair. Lots of trial and error.
@CoolKarmaVideo is it okay to just use baking soda and skip the vinegar? If not, what type of vinegar has the least smell, that would be okay to use on hair?
@GixxxerKim I am really sensitive to the smell of vinegar too. Just don't use it-- the point of the vinegar rinse is to introduce acid to the hair-- and you may not need it if your hair feels conditioned enough without it. If you feel you need a 'conditioner' just use lemon juice.
The "no poo" community on livejournal has very good information about all sorts of different methods of cleansing. You can even use only water to wash your hair. No joke :)
OMG! I just tried this, I have shorter fine blonde/dirty blonde hair. I did 1+1/2 tbs to 2 cups of each, rinsed in between and after, and could IMMEDIATELY feel the difference. When I towel dried, there were no chemical frizzies, or knots, and my hair took a sigh of relief! I had IMMEDIATE results and am now finding people to give my hair products away to. AMAZING! I'm gonna enjoy shopping for essential oils now to scent my hair! Thank you!
I have recently started using the No 'poo method. Although I have very damaged hair from dyeing my hair. So I use half a tablespoon with one cup water and four tablespoons with one cup water. I still have to mess around to find the best ratio because my hair is both oily and dry so the baking soda over does the dryness and I don't get enough moisture or I can't even brush my hair, but I guess that wouldn't work anyway since I haven't brushed my hair in two years.
@gingerntoast - A fine tooth comb works just as well as a brush I have found, for distributing the natural oils. When the ends of my hair get dry I just use a half cup of vinegar. It really washes the bs residue out and helps to recondition. In my Going No Shampoo numbers 2 and 3 my daughter and I touch on some of these tips.
If you use the no-poo method, make sure the styling products you use don't have any silicone in them (the ingredients that usually end in "-one"). The harmful sulfates in shampoo are what remove them during washing, so if you're no longer removing them, they'll build up and make your hair dull.
@tennc38 -- Excellent tip. When I use to wash with shampoo my hair was so fly away I HAD to use hairspray. But now ... my hair doesn't need any product and it isn't always falling in my face.
I heard about this movement about 5 weeks ago while having a family gathering. I have been a shampoo once a day guy for as long as I can remember .I decided to try this life experiment. I'm a 54 year old male.I have not used shampoo or any other hair product now for 4 weeks. My hair has never been softer. It has a new natural wavey curliness to it. I never use a blow dryer. My method of washing is simple. In the shower I rub and rinse my hair for about a minute and thats it.
I just started using baking soda for my hair & not only that..I researched its healing to brush your teeth w/it and prevents tooth decay & gum disease...another thing..I personally believe & some researchers also feel there is a connection between women's breast cancer & the use of deodorant/antiperspirants..it clogs the pores causing nasty bacteria, etc to literally back up..perspiring is a natural way to rid body of toxins..now I use baking soda w/powder puff..NO odor whatsoever! I'm amazed.
@kokonutbaby1 -- Very cool! Taking the big leap myself right now ... just to see what it would be like to stop SHAVING altogether. Shhh. Not ready to vlog about that one just yet. lol
before you started using this solution you had shiny brown hair, now its limp and grey do you think the acid in the vinegar contributed to this and made you hair look so dry now ?
@kempouk -- LOL! That's a good one. I'm afraid my gray simply continues to come in with age ;-) And depending on if I blow dry or use a curling iron my hair looks more or less "full". And of course ... there is the simple "bad hair day" that may account for the differences. On a serious note, it IS possible to over dry the hair with the baking soda. I notice that if I don't use a vinegar rinse, my hair gets very dull. So much so that I will often use straight vinegar on my hair.
@thisismyusernameandh -- Nah. I just talk like one of those automated phone trees IRL. :-) Check out Going No Shampoo 3. Totally off the cuff and filmed in a single take.
@xs1937 -- Good question about help with hair growth. Clearly I am no expert and I would have to guess that it would depend on what was causing hair growth issues. For me, my hair is thicker and feels full, though I can't say it has changed how fast it grows.
@glazzzies -- Yep. It's certainly not for everyone. But at 50 cents for a box of baking soda ... it's nice to know there are options. Indeed since I've been vlogging on no-poo I've met lots of WO (water only) folks who don't use baking soda or vinegar -- just a hot water scrub and rinse. And their hair is still clean -- it's just good to know we have a choice.
5. Just did a last experiment, I super buttered my hands but before I added oat meals in a cup and water to the top and pressed the oatmeals without blending) so they looked a bit like a paste. I took this paste and with it I could remove the butter from my hands, after washing well, as I said about 90% was removed but that's perfect. The milky water made by d oatmeals alone didnt clean my hands, u have 2 take d paste and use it in ur scalp, not so muchn d hair itself, ll try this way nxt time.
@NatralisticPantheist -- Lots of good tips here NP. Thanks for sharing them. I heard from a woman who used boiled wheat flour "soup" and said it was excellent as well. So many good alternatives out there. So good we are having a conversation about them.
@CoolKarmaVideo I just tried something else for my last shower, I simply blended oatmeals with water but this time until making an almost homogeneous substance so no pieces of oatmeal could stick to my hair. It worked great, I thought just as shampoo at the end but its harder to wash away. Ill try in the future to make it even better... I will comment on it. Thanks to you for sharing in the first place.
4. Well some bits of oatmeal can be left, but nothing really if you wash well. My hair is yet wet but I'll see if this is indeed better and removes excess oil. I massaged with the blended oatmeals, trying to exfoliate. Hope it goes well as i said :P
3... After grabbing some oatmeals I blended, a few in my fist, adding water and washing with them, the same effect of the egg yolk seemed to happen and they were making an exfoliating effect I thought, which I know is good to remove dead cells, because they're a bit rough. So I went into the shower with a cup of blended oatmeals and apple cider vinegar diluted as you said and baking soda but not for my hair but other smelly parts :p. I'll see how it goes.
2... It left my hands moisturized, it didn't took the butter away 100% but I would say 90%, they felt clean, not oily! But for my hair I thought it would be smelly. I wanted to look for something else besides baking soda, because in my experiment when I tried to remove the butter with the baking soda it didn't work so well. I tried a few fruits and vegetables, nothing worked well until I used oatmeal!
1. I just came out of the shower, I've used something different: oatmeals.
I did an experiment after reading in the Internet that using an egg yolk for your hair would clean it, to see if it indeed took ''excess'' oil away. I didn't use the egg yolk but oatmeals because I saw they had the same effect, how? After spreading butter over my hands, so they were very shiny and oily I took the egg yolk to first see if it would clean the oil away. It did after washing well with it for some seconds...
I'm 27 years old. After I watched your video and researched online, I stopped using shampoo. I've been washing my hair with backing soda and conditioning with apple vineger for a month, and I don't plan to stop. My hair is clean, soft and shiny, I love it. It never feels like straw anymore. I am not losing as much hair as would fall out with sodium laureth sulfate shampoo washings. I regret not knowing about this option sooner.
I tried going without shampoo. I have very oily hair. After 4 months of pony tails, baking soda rinses, and scalp acne, I lost it and went back to shampoo. Everyone talks about how simple it is, but my hair was disgusting everyday right until the end.
@zuliciousjump --Thank you so much for posting your experience. It's good for people who are having a hard time with this to know they were not alone. I do believe that each of us are different and this may not work for everyone. For myself, I also went through a really tough time at the beginning until I figured out that my hair/scalp needs a lot more acid. That's why I started using lemon juice as I mention in video #2. Also a fine comb in the shower helps me to strip out the build up.
I also have very oily hair, first time, I was not satisfied, my hair was weird, not silky, and still had some build up, but from second time on, yesterday was my 4th time, it worked perfectly. My friends couldn't tell I didn't use shampoo.
@zuliciousjump I am so sorry to hear that. I had problems at first too, it didn't get better untill I went caveman, no hair tying and bandanas, no rinses except fo a bit of warm water. When the oil got bad I was literally toweling the crap out of it untill it looked...well decent. My poor scalp took quite a while to heal and normalize. Now it is great, if I think I want fresh hair I use a light, clean rinsing condioner and that is it. I think leaving it loose was the turning point.
I want to start going no shampoo, I already started to wash our cloths without detergents, I use a piece of organic 100% biodegradable, few table spoons of bicarb, and instead of softener, I use white vinegar. Honestly, I got already used to the idea that perfumed doesn't mean clean, but clean means odourless.
@aliceihm -- Good luck with your no poo experiment. I also make my own laundry detergent. What are the ingredients you are using in the washing machine for your clothes? I use a bar of grated soap, washing soda and borax. Then we hang the clothes in the back yard to solar dry! :-)
@CoolKarmaVideo --> I leave all day the cloths in cold water, then at night, cause in italy electricity costs less in the night, I put the laundry in the washing machine with a piece of 100% organic soap, made with coconut oil, and a table spoon of bicarb and instead of the softener I use white vinegar.
Hey! I am trying to go natural because I went through a bout of hair loss. I had wonderful thick hair until school (I used to oil and only wash once a week) but after I began frequent shampooing (plus stress and pollution) my hair started thinning. I wanna go natural (hoping to regain my lush head of hair).
My question to you is, does your hair by any chance feel dry??? I used to have an oily scalp, now its kinda normal, nut the hair tends to be dry and frizzy. wud this aggravate it? thanks :)

@kalimah23 -- I'm no expert and of course you should consult your doctor about what's right for you -- but I can say from my experience I have serious hair loss after a major stress or illness. I then make the mistake and stop brushing because my hair is "falling out" which for me makes the ends of my hair very dry and frizzy. When I use my synthetic boar's hair bristle brush, it distributes the oil from my scalp all the way down to the ends. Also you may try less baking soda. Good Luck!
I want to try going no poo. I'm wondering if my skin is reacting to all the chemicals in hair and skin products... (Also, I am in Japan, so it's difficult to know what's in the hair products!)
I did want to mention that when I was in the hospital as a teen and unable to wash my hair, my mother would have me comb my hair through with talcum powder. For those of us who have a huge amount of oil buildup when going through the transition, I'd recommend doing this if needed.
@shopaholic1 --Exactly the topic of the Going No Shampoo #3 video my daughter and I talked about making this morning! LOL All of the MISTAKES we have made over the last year +. I had read about using things like mayo, olive oil, coconut oil etc. only to discover you CAN'T get them out of your hair. I tried unsuccessfully to get the oils out with lemons, yogurt, vinegar, baking soda etc. etc. With no luck. Only thing I know to get that out is SHAMPOO. :-)
Hi there, a very informative video, i would like to ask you about using olive or coconut oil, how can i wash them out without using shampoo? Thanks in advance 4 ur assistance

I used the no poo technique on her, She is three years old, and the type that closes her eyes and hides her face when I wash it. I was very mindful of both solutions and only used a little bit (like a couple splashes or actually a couple of mists) on the top of her head, I massaged it into her scalp, and then I very thoroughly rinsed her hair (like 5 times each). She didn't complain about burning or anything!
Do you know if toddlers can use the no poo technique, and if so how would a parent do this? I am very concerned about the chemicals in my toddler's shampoo
Do you know if toddlers can use the no poo technique, and if so how would a parent do this? I am very concerned about the chemicals in my toddlers shampoo...
@AylaCale -- Good question about Toddlers. What I see for myself as one of the keys to success with this method is the scalp massage. That seems to help loosen up the oils (sebum) on the scalp. I would also be mindful about the vinegar solution because that can really sting. What a lucky little one to have a mom who cares so much about. Good luck to both of you and let us know how it goes.
How do you make a gallon of your "no poo" wash and rinse? Please forgive me I am very bad at math. Thank you so much for posting these videos, i cant wait for part 3!
@AylaCale -- I usually only make what I need for that one shower, because I like to make the mixture with hot water as it dissolves easily and I don't get such a shock pouring cold water on my head. :-) But if you'd like to make a gallon up, you would use 1 cup of baking soda to 1 gallon of water. Or thereabouts that is of course if 1 TBL to 1 cup of water seems to be the right ratio for your hair.
im muslim and need to lightly dampen my hair 5 times a day,as per the requirements before i pray, in addition to washing my hair every day even i take a shower.
my hair does get a little dry and frizz so do u have any tips for that.
currently i just apply a few drops of oil into my hair to prevent it but can u give some other tips.
btw if its important im a guy with short to medium hair length.
@soloman244 -- Regarding dry hair ... from what I've read the vinegar and water rinse should help alot with dry hair. If you wanted you could consider adding a couple of drops of essential oils like cedarwood or lavendar. Chamomile is also said to be very good fro dry hair. Good luck finding something that works for you.
A very carasmatic woman, a bit ott for the subject I think but still very insightful answers to a lot of questions people may have, and in a non fuss straight forward kind of way. helpful
@pavilionbug -- Deep bow. My youngest has been no shampoo for a year now (she's featured in our part 2 video on YouTube) and we are planning our third video soon that will talk about all the DON'Ts that we learned along the way. (Hint: Don't use olive oil! It won't come out of your hair unless you strip it out with soap/shampoo! -- live and learn. LOL)
Cool. I'm a few weeks in and I have started getting bad headakes, worse so directly after Ive washed with Bicarb.. Am keeping an eye on it incase its unrelated. will let you know for ur new vid.
I used a dash of baking soda mixed with an egg white to give it a sort of "cleansing hair mask". My hair felt very clean and fresh! One the main reasons why I avoid conditioner is because I get acne from a few of the ingredients, but if I just shampoo my hair feels like straw. The no-poo method fixes everything, though!
Thanks so much for doing this set of videos - I thought they were super helpful. I tried the method and thought it was great, although I admit to having gone back to my fave organic shampoo/conditioners. Oh well. I'll definitely still the No 'Poo method as a backup, though.
I wrote about it on my website: smartgirlsguidetobeauty.blogspot.com

I have been no-pooing for about 5 months and have been very happy with it . I have naturally very course , curly hair and my hair is MUCH MUCH less frizzy than it was b4 I started no-pooing . The ONLY problem that I have had is that my hair seems to be courser , but I have come to learn that , thats just its narural texture and even tho its not as soft to the touch , but it looks amazeing :) I dont think I will EVER go back to shampoo !
Congratulations! As I mention in my follow up video (no poo, part 2) my hair also tended to get a build up at times when i was just learning what worked well for me. What seems to help on my end, is to do a lemon juice rinse every once in a while. It seems to work as a gentle clarifying agent. After the lemon juice I notice my hair has a much softer texture. Good luck finding what works for YOU!
I've been no poo for 2 months and loving it. All I do is vigorously rinse with water and finger nails on the scalp and brush it out with my regularly cleaned boar bristle brush. Not only is my hair softer and shinier, but my wallet is fatter.
I tried going without shampoo before, and I currently skip days, but I didn't know about using baking soda. I'm going to go for it again, starting right now!
It's sad that most of the things called 'necessities' or 'healthy' these days are anything but.
A note on vinegar smell: Vinegar evaporates faster than water. It has a lot of other health and beauty applications and the vinegar smell disappears as it evaporates, even without rinsing it off.
I've got an other no poo methos that doesn't require water at all. Just take a little rye flour and rub it in to your scalp, then brusch trough your hair carefully. The rye floor may be visible in dark hair so i guess this method works best with light hair. A quite good method if you are in a hurry.
Cool tip about the flour. You are the second person who has spoken to me about using flour as a cleaning agent for hair.
I still shower and wash my hair everyday, because my hair seems to do better that way. But my daughter is good for a day or two without washing with BS and ACV. I think it all depends on your body type, climate and HORMONES! :-)
My daughter and I recently posted our second YouTube video on a follow up with the No Poo experiment. In it we mention that some people do very well with just WATER. But everyone seems to have a unique body chemistry and indeed that may change over time. You may want to go with what works for a while and then try new things later on down the road.
I recently tried to go without baking soda again ... and it simply doesn't work well for me. So for now ... I use BS with a ACV rinse and once a week or so I clarify with lemon juice. Works well for my hair ... for now!
I've read about lots of people who do "no poo" with just water and they say it works great! My own sense is that each of us have unique body chemistry which can even change over the years so that it is hard to have a one-size-fits-all answer. For me, my skin and hair both tend to produce a lot of oil plus I live in an area with a lot of dust and debris in the air, so the baking soda and vinegar helps a great deal. Good luck!!
Don't use red wine or balsamic vinegars. They contain small amounts of lead. I have been no-pooing for about a week. I just massage and rinse with hot water. I comb with a wide tooth comb when it dries.
I just don't know about using baking soda and vinegar, it seems the former would dry out my hair...I dunno, as with the hot water, I guess it WOULD if not for the oils. My hair seems more waxy than oily.
Good tips about the different types of vinegar. Most folks going no-poo seem to prefer Apple Cider Vinegar.
I tend to have very oily skin and hair, so the baking soda is a help for my routine. I also noticed a waxy build-up when I was rinsing with hot water. Every so often I "clarify" my hair with some lemon juice or straight vinegar. That seems to take care of any residue. I also find a cold water final rinse helps to keep down the extra production of oils.
I was on an accutane prescription, which dries out your sebaceous glands. That is a very good time to make the no-shampoo switch, because your body doesn't make your hair over-produce grease.
As odd as it may seem, from my experience if you are prescribed accutane you should try the no-shampoo diet.
during the summer lemon juice and water works like a hairspray too.
I really like using Orange blossom and Rose water when making natural beauty products at home. You can get these at Middle eastern grocery stores for $1 and they come in a glass bottle
I agreed up until you got to the part about colored hair. I used to work as a hairdresser and we used baking soda as a stripper to get rid of build up. I would assume that the rough baking soda would also some what strip color too. Maybe with more water and let the water and soda mixture sit and hopefully get rid of some of the grittyness of the baking soda to keep it from stripping color. I don't know.
Thanks for the feedback! I defer to your expertise in this area. My only source of information is what I've read on various blogs and no poo sites. Seems some people have no problem while others indicate that it has removed some of the color. I think your guess is correct that it may have to do with the ratio and how well it is dissolved or even how long it stays on the hair.
If I am using a vinegar rinse (on occasion I skip this step) I will put the essential oils in with the dilute vinegar solution. It's only a TABLE SPOON per cup of water so it really is not that strong of a scent from the vinegar. If I notice my hair is producing extra oil then I may forgo the vinegar for a day or two, in which case I'll put one or two drops of essential oil in with the baking soda mixture.
Oils like lemongrass, rosemary and Ylang-ylang are good for hair that tends to be oily whereas lavendar, chamomile or peppermint are said to be better for hair on the dry side. Have fun!
Not to be a douche, but washing your hair with anything every day is completely crazy and unnecessary. I've just been using water for about two years and my hair is doing wonderfully. (I actually get a shitload of compliments, which is pretty neat.)
Instead of "joining the no shampoo movement", just stop shampoo :)

Shampoo free? BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE!
It works!

A tip for dryness while poo-free is taking some oil (sweet almond, grape seed, apricot, coconut, some use olive oil, but i find its too heavy) and applying it into the tips of the hair. It's important that you don't put it near your roots, otherwise you will have a very bad hair day.
Hope this helps someone!

Does it work on dyed pubic hair?
chubbybeastfishing 2 months ago
Thanks for the advice. I have been transitioning into the no shampoo method. However I was planning on dying my hair next week, and wasn't sure if I could still continue washing my hair with vinegar?
maricari5000 3 months ago
I have a question, I have been using no poo method, only two times so far, with baking soda and vinegar, but my hair is now so dry, (it was dry before, but less) and feels like sponge and dirty as straw. Is this normal? Is it part of the adjustment process, or I have been using inadequate amounts, or rinsing wrong?
sandynow 3 months ago
@sandynow -- for me, the dry straw like feeling was that I was not getting the baking soda all out of my hair. What works well for my daughter and I is using a fine tooth comb IN the shower. I comb through the baking soda solution. Then follow with the vinegar solution and comb that through also. Then rinse very well. If my hair still feels a big ... off ... I use straight vinegar. Vinegar conditions the hair and makes sure to dissolve any residue left behind by the baking soda. Good Luck!
CoolKarmaVideo 3 months ago
Great ! Things I have used are, 20 mule team borax(similar to baking soda) , and powdered citric acid diluted for rinse/conditioner. One can also use aloe juice for gel. Or a salt water mixed with the aloe for gel.

Love your videos!
XXX
darscilla 4 months ago
@darscilla -- congratulations on finding something that works for you. :) My hair also tended to be oily and I do need to wash it everyday. I've never had a problem with over drying if I follow with the vinegar rinse. For me that seems to be the key. On occasion, I will even use straight vinegar on my hair. It keeps my hair soft and shiny. Good luck!!!

efabrigmail 6 months ago

CherryXPistol 9 months ago
CoolKarmaVideo 9 months ago
Can someone please tell me what happens if you don't use the baking soda or vingerar? So, no hair products whatsoever, just water. Will your hair look greasy or not?
Praguedive 10 months ago
@Praguedive ~ regarding the WO (Water Only) method of No Poo, this seems to be a matter of individual body chemistry if it will work for you or not. There are lots of people who have been doing WO for years and their hair is clean and healthy. In my own personal experience, it does not work for me with the length of hair that I have and the environment where I live. Could be the pollination in the air, could be the natural oils my hair has. But for me I need to use the BS and V. Good luck!
CoolKarmaVideo 10 months ago
WARNING!!! DO NOT USE VINEGAR OR LEMON ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE COLORED HAIR!!!! I did and it turned my neutral blond into brassy yellow. NOT ATTRACTIVE. It does work though if you have natural hair.

GixxxerKim 11 months ago
@GixxxerKim --- Hmmmm. That's interesting. I don't notice a vinegar scent ... then again I love the smell of vinegar so I may not be really aware. I imagine it may make a difference what kind of vinegar you are using. Most of the forums like apple cider vinegar. But I tend to use simple white vinegar and rinse it very very well,. I think it probably took me five weeks to come up with what worked well for my hair. Lots of trial and error.
CoolKarmaVideo 11 months ago
@CoolKarmaVideo is it okay to just use baking soda and skip the vinegar? If not, what type of vinegar has the least smell, that would be okay to use on hair?
mrsmoon711 11 months ago
@GixxxerKim I am really sensitive to the smell of vinegar too. Just don't use it-- the point of the vinegar rinse is to introduce acid to the hair-- and you may not need it if your hair feels conditioned enough without it. If you feel you need a 'conditioner' just use lemon juice.

I have recently started using the No 'poo method. Although I have very damaged hair from dyeing my hair. So I use half a tablespoon with one cup water and four tablespoons with one cup water. I still have to mess around to find the best ratio because my hair is both oily and dry so the baking soda over does the dryness and I don't get enough moisture or I can't even brush my hair, but I guess that wouldn't work anyway since I haven't brushed my hair in two years.
gingerntoast 11 months ago
@gingerntoast - A fine tooth comb works just as well as a brush I have found, for distributing the natural oils. When the ends of my hair get dry I just use a half cup of vinegar. It really washes the bs residue out and helps to recondition. In my Going No Shampoo numbers 2 and 3 my daughter and I touch on some of these tips.
CoolKarmaVideo 11 months ago
@CoolKarmaVideo Thanks! I should have watched all the videos before I commented. Opps!
gingerntoast 11 months ago
@CoolKarmaVideo I also meant to ask, what kind of scented oils do you recommend?
mrsmoon711 11 months ago
If you use the no-poo method, make sure the styling products you use don't have any silicone in them (the ingredients that usually end in "-one"). The harmful sulfates in shampoo are what remove them during washing, so if you're no longer removing them, they'll build up and make your hair dull.
tennc38 11 months ago

I'm amazed.

before you started using this solution you had shiny brown hair, now its limp and grey do you think the acid in the vinegar contributed to this and made you hair look so dry now ?
kempouk 1 year ago
@kempouk -- LOL! That's a good one. I'm afraid my gray simply continues to come in with age ;-) And depending on if I blow dry or use a curling iron my hair looks more or less "full". And of course ... there is the simple "bad hair day" that may account for the differences. On a serious note, it IS possible to over dry the hair with the baking soda. I notice that if I don't use a vinegar rinse, my hair gets very dull. So much so that I will often use straight vinegar on my hair.

Aren't Baking Soda and Vinegar chemicals as well? Sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid? I'll stick with poo.
glazzzies 1 year ago

CoolKarmaVideo 1 year ago
@CoolKarmaVideo I just tried something else for my last shower, I simply blended oatmeals with water but this time until making an almost homogeneous substance so no pieces of oatmeal could stick to my hair. It worked great, I thought just as shampoo at the end but its harder to wash away. Ill try in the future to make it even better... I will comment on it. Thanks to you for sharing in the first place.
NatralisticPantheist 1 year ago
4. Well some bits of oatmeal can be left, but nothing really if you wash well. My hair is yet wet but I'll see if this is indeed better and removes excess oil. I massaged with the blended oatmeals, trying to exfoliate. Hope it goes well as i said :P
NatralisticPantheist 1 year ago
NatralisticPantheist 1 year ago
NatralisticPantheist 1 year ago
NatralisticPantheist 1 year ago
I'm 27 years old. After I watched your video and researched online, I stopped using shampoo. I've been washing my hair with backing soda and conditioning with apple vineger for a month, and I don't plan to stop. My hair is clean, soft and shiny, I love it. It never feels like straw anymore. I am not losing as much hair as would fall out with sodium laureth sulfate shampoo washings. I regret not knowing about this option sooner.

zuliciousjump 1 year ago
@zuliciousjump --Thank you so much for posting your experience. It's good for people who are having a hard time with this to know they were not alone. I do believe that each of us are different and this may not work for everyone. For myself, I also went through a really tough time at the beginning until I figured out that my hair/scalp needs a lot more acid. That's why I started using lemon juice as I mention in video #2. Also a fine comb in the shower helps me to strip out the build up.
CoolKarmaVideo 1 year ago
@zuliciousjump
I also have very oily hair, first time, I was not satisfied, my hair was weird, not silky, and still had some build up, but from second time on, yesterday was my 4th time, it worked perfectly. My friends couldn't tell I didn't use shampoo.
aliceihm 1 year ago
@zuliciousjump I am so sorry to hear that. I had problems at first too, it didn't get better untill I went caveman, no hair tying and bandanas, no rinses except fo a bit of warm water. When the oil got bad I was literally toweling the crap out of it untill it looked...well decent. My poor scalp took quite a while to heal and normalize. Now it is great, if I think I want fresh hair I use a light, clean rinsing condioner and that is it. I think leaving it loose was the turning point.

I want to start going no shampoo, I already started to wash our cloths without detergents, I use a piece of organic 100% biodegradable, few table spoons of bicarb, and instead of softener, I use white vinegar. aliceihm 1 year ago
@aliceihm -- Good luck with your no poo experiment. I also make my own laundry detergent. What are the ingredients you are using in the washing machine for your clothes? I use a bar of grated soap, washing soda and borax. Then we hang the clothes in the back yard to solar dry! :-)
CoolKarmaVideo 1 year ago
@CoolKarmaVideo --> I leave all day the cloths in cold water, then at night, cause in italy electricity costs less in the night, I put the laundry in the washing machine with a piece of 100% organic soap, made with coconut oil, and a table spoon of bicarb and instead of the softener I use white vinegar.

AylaCale 1 year ago
@AylaCale -- I usually only make what I need for that one shower, because I like to make the mixture with hot water as it dissolves easily and I don't get such a shock pouring cold water on my head. :-) But if you'd like to make a gallon up, you would use 1 cup of baking soda to 1 gallon of water. Or thereabouts that is of course if 1 TBL to 1 cup of water seems to be the right ratio for your hair.

@trevormac77 Cheers on having more money to spend on things that really matter! Congratulations on finding what works for you. Nicely done.

Great video.

Question EVERYTHING! It may seem like a cynical way to live ... but the freedom that comes from learning for ourSelf what is Truth is priceless.

I've got an other no poo methos that doesn't require water at all. Just take a little rye flour and rub it in to your scalp, then brusch trough your hair carefully. The rye floor may be visible in dark hair so i guess this method works best with light hair. A quite good method if you are in a hurry.
How often do you wash your hair?
AerialAure 1 year ago
Cool tip about the flour. You are the second person who has spoken to me about using flour as a cleaning agent for hair.
I still shower and wash my hair everyday, because my hair seems to do better that way. But my daughter is good for a day or two without washing with BS and ACV. I think it all depends on your body type, climate and HORMONES! :-)

iv started using baking soda because my hair was getting nasty... iv never imagined how great the results are with baking soda!
another question... does my hair eventually become soft naturally without using baking soda? or will i need to wash with it occasionally?

My daughter and I recently posted our second YouTube video on a follow up with the No Poo experiment. In it we mention that some people do very well with just WATER. But everyone seems to have a unique body chemistry and indeed that may change over time. You may want to go with what works for a while and then try new things later on down the road.

I recently tried to go without baking soda again ... and it simply doesn't work well for me. So for now ... I use BS with a ACV rinse and once a week or so I clarify with lemon juice. Works well for my hair ... for now!
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

iv just recently started going "no poo"... but are baking soda and vinegar necessary? im just rinsing with warm water...
0kenyk0 1 year ago

Good luck!

About that grease period:
I was on an accutane prescription, which dries out your sebaceous glands. That is a very good time to make the no-shampoo switch, because your body doesn't make your hair over-produce grease.
As odd as it may seem, from my experience if you are prescribed accutane you should try the no-shampoo diet.

sugar water makes a good hairspray replacement
but its not good in hot weather or humidity
during the summer lemon juice and water works like a hairspray too.

I think your guess is correct that it may have to do with the ratio and how well it is dissolved or even how long it stays on the hair.

when do you put the essential oil on the hair? is that after the vinegar rinse? does the vinegar smell overpower it?
breann092589 2 years ago

Have fun!

I thought you expressed yourself very eloquently and I loved that you addressed the misconceptions about the social norm of "clean".
sakuraness 2 years ago
i agree, klarmer. won't all that oil make your hair - oily? hence, no-poo (even the natural kind) would be best, no?
prettybones8 2 years ago
Not to be a douche, but washing your hair with anything every day is completely crazy and unnecessary. I've just been using water for about two years and my hair is doing wonderfully. (I actually get a shitload of compliments, which is pretty neat.)
Instead of "joining the no shampoo movement", just stop shampoo :)

You now girls have always told me that I had soft hair. I only use bar shoop. I been doing that since I can remember.
