Carl Sagan's Cosmos made more sense to me then anything ever had when I was a kid and I'll always be extremely grateful to him for having taken the effort to educated people. He was a class act, a very wise man.
Carl Sagan has many important things to say, as he encountered the public. We was selected for television for being part of the first Venus space probes, and people liked him. Since then, we have seen what he has to say about it: Cosmos.
Carl Sagan said it correct about narcissistic egocentric viewpoint of the Universe, as many fables are suspicious in their composition that resembles society. This creates a Jesus Christ answer: We are not of this World, for if we were the World would love us; we are now citizens of Heaven; Men will persecute you because of me [Christ]; do not conform to the patterns of this World, test and know the Will of God; seek truth & righteousness. I am not from the Universe. Find Christ, and live.
Carl Sagan. A great man of "science" who misled a great many people. For those who haven't noticed, this is NOT science. Science deals with phenomena that can be reproduced, measured, and analyzed. Religion, by it's very definition, deals with things that cannot. He has no business trying to discount religious beliefs by using scientific methods, because that is not science. That is his personal opinion.
He knows now how right or wrong he was. I feel bad for the many he led astray.
@Shepson1 Well most "religions" have about as much credibility as Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. Sure, we cant absolutely disprove them but that sure as fuck doesnt make them real. "What can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence".
You're entitled to your opinion, as am I. But your opinion is not going to change mine, especially if you use disrespectful and offensive language.
Regardless of our opinions, my point is that this vid is not science. You cannot use science to disprove religion. Religion, by definition, describes phenomena that science simply can't. My point is that this video is merely Carl's opinion, which he's entitled to. My beef is with those who call this science, when it simply isn't.
@Shepson1 "Religion, by definition, describes phenomena that science simply can't". Yeah right, like how religion described the world as being flat, how you can cure leprosy with animal sacrifice, how the earth is 6000 years old, how all complex life created as is, how the earth is the center of the solar system, galaxy and universe... Science has often proven religion wrong. It's lunacy to think that something that got such basic things wrong would be right about everything else.
@Kariakas Scripture never makes claims of a flat earth, or a geocentric universe. That came from humans in the church adding what didn't belong. Cures for Leprosy were miracles, another realm science has no say in. The idea of complex life, diversity, and a young earth model are all supported in the natural world just as much as evolution and millions of years, if you'd do your research. It cannot be PROVEN either way, which makes it non-scientific. But you've already made up your mind.
@Shepson1 Yeah geology, archeology, raidocarbon dating are all wrong... your religious documentries telling us how the grand canyon was formed in hours by Noah's flood must be right.
Oh and forget diamonds take millions of years to form... oh fossil fuel must form much faster then we thought... dinosaurs can't be millions of years old either... forget about amber being millions of years old...
Young earth theories have NEVER BEEN PROVEN, they are nonsense, it your mind that is made up.
You’re right. Those things have never been proven. But you missed my point. Everyone seems to forget that neither has old earth theory been proven. It’s ALL theory. My point is that you must accept on faith either theory. Faith that scripture is right or that science is. You pick. And that's not science. I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong. I'm saying this isn't science.
Keep in mind that in science, widespread acceptance DOES NOT equal proof.
@Shepson1 It;s obvious you dont understand the definition of the word theory as it relates to science. You are using it in a layman's terms not in the context of it proper definition. A theory, as it relates to science, is based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation via the scientific method. Creationism uses the bible, a book written over 2000 years by desert nomads. Yeah that makes sense.
@thequantumflux Your comment exhibits extreme naivety. Yes, theories are based on repeatable observations often considered fact. But that does not make the theory=fact. There is still no way of PROVING old earth theory. As for nomads, Luke (Luke/Acts) was a doctor. Mathew was a tax collector. Moses(Pentateuch) was an architect/engineer. Daniel was akin to today's VP. Paul (Cor, Thes, Col, Romans) was a Roman army officer, and Job was the Bill Gates of his day. Not exactly nomads.
@thequantumflux You can believe what you want. I'm not trying to convince you that the Bible has the correct answer, because I can't. I am trying to open eyes to the idea that what is widely considered factual can be nothing more than belief, as theories are not proof. Carl Sagan has every right in this vid to exhibit his personal beliefs, but that doesn't make them true. This isn't science anymore than creationism is. And he does not have the right to use "science" to disprove religion.
Noah as a prophet was only a prophet for one group of people, one certain teritory and one certain period of time. Whay should God floded some people if they never heard the massage.
Science doesn't care about religion, all it cares about is discovering the truth through testing and the scientific method. Religion started this animosity towards science not the other way around.
As for working together science is not based on magical feelings and unprovable theories such as the great flood or ID. If it cant be tested with the scientific method it isn't science.
The only reason religious people feel "put down" is because science wont entertain religion's fantasy.
thats cool i didnt mean 2 get into a heated debat was just making an observation.but, first ive seen a few documentries that suggest the flood may have happened like water damage/erosion on the pyramids.and it really bugs me that religion gets blamed 4 things like the crusades ,when man twisted it 4 his purpose.like science .u think that gene manipulation will b used only 4 healing?yeah right the millitary will probably use it as a weapon.posably killing us all! btw i'm a science fan 2
I'm sorry if I came off as argumentative it wasn't my intent, I just tend to be a little too blunt sometimes.
I can agree with you that science and religion can be used for both good and bad. And I personally don't care if someone believes in god/s or not, as long as they don't try to hurt anyone or bother them with it.
But unfortunately "I did it for my god" is all too often a reason given for hate and violence.
Again sorry for the harsh tone it was unintended :)
The Nile was known to flood its banks, also there is evidence of an inland sea left over from the ice age that at one time may have broke free and flooded a large area. This does not give evidence to a major flood that covered the earth.
Because science requires evidence and reason, and when these criterium are applied to religion, religion falls flat. You can believe in a deity if you wish, but that is a leap of faith. Faith is rediculous.
Natural selection is simply the beneficial mutations being carried on and propagating. Its not like an animal says to itself "hey I should grow some wings". Instead it is more the beneficial changes being passed on as opposed to those less beneficial, may i suggest you read up on it.
@tickle155: “Evolution is the label given to the process of Natural Selection. This process is simply a set of discreet, statistical systems which say different forms of life will thrive more than others, and that their environment is what selects for certain species to be more successful than others. This is a perfect description of why and how particular creatures are either more abundant or scarce, and it also works perfectly as an analog for determining the variation of species.”
A pedophile prophet, child molesting priest, war over lands because of religion, power, money. It all boils down to human stupidity, or as some like to call it. The search for truth. Then we have those who are smart enough to take advatege of this. And then we have those who realize talking snakes isn't the answer. We dig, we search, we seek. Religion hates this . They like to be sure. We don't . We know it is so much more to learn, and religion is no way in hell keeping us from doing it.
@Rastelin Using the idea that you can turn on an electric lamp invalidates our moral codes is fraud; it is like standing before a bookcase of family law, penal codes, and tax codes, and claiming there is no such thing as sin, science says so. The problem with many people who use the word "science" is they never practiced science in their lives, and use it as a shield; proper science never told us how to behave and cannot tell us how to behave, right down to the Enola Gay.

It is very well made, but I would just like to say something if you would not mind. I am personally a Muslim, and I will tell you my Religion is not based on faith but on fact. It is fact that the Quran was by God, and there is significant evidence to back this. So as fun as these videos are, it must be very depressing to those who believe in it. Because I can assure you brother that the Last Day is in fact real.
Why must you be disrespectful? I do have the facts. The Quran talks about the earth being round, it talks about the big bang! The Quran talks about Iron coming down from space. I talk with respect just to create conversation and you say this comment? That is not fair.
The facts believers use have been false every time. They always say "oh we have facts supporting this and that" but they never really do.
So far you have done just that. I don't know what the Quran says, but your argument was that your religion is not based on faith. I think you're absolutely wrong.
What puts me off most though is how you claim those things (in your 1st comment) are facts and seem to think they are absolutely correct, and have been proven so.
I ask you to please supply these facts, it is one thing to claim the quran has them, it is another to actually prove this.
Creationism is a pipe dream of those who feel their faith being marginalized by science, yet I don't see them willing to do without its current benefits.
You really should just post these facts and let them speak for themselves.
I can not respect some one who believes in something not seen nore heard, and in laws that are silly and horrid.I could not respect a grown man that believed in he lochness monster or in Big Foot .
Ex-Muslim here. Can you tell me which verse in the Koran talks about the earth being round? This is pure lie given by Muslim apologists. Show us the verse where it talks about the big bang too. And the same for iron comeing form space. Show us the verses. You want to have a conversation, let us have one.
Carl Sagan made another video about Alexandria Eqypt in the 3rd bc. I forgot the persons name but a scientist figured out a simple way to prove that the earth was round and got a rough idea of the size. The bible authors either didn't know or care about this knowledge.
Good points. When the Muslims claim that the Koran says that the earth is round, they presuppose that nobody at the time knew or could know of the shape of the earth. Anyways, so much for this guy getting back to us. However, there are a few Koranic verses where Allah says that the earth is flat:
And after that He spread the earth.
-- Sura 79:30
Who has made earth for you like a bed (spread out)
Are you talking about Hypaita? The female scientist in Alexandria that was killed by christian zealots for her (correct) scientific theories? Just google Hypatia, there is a lot of great info on her. It's amazing and depressing.
I've read the "Science in Koran" stuff and they are all so very unconvincing. You Muslims either lie through your teeth or exaggerate on what's said or stretch the meaning of things so much, just to say that "The Koran talks about the big bang" or "The Koran says the earth is round". Most of the "science" in the koran wasnt sent from god through the fax machine known as Muhammud. It came from the greeks. Funny how they leave that slightly importnat detail out
Still a bitter pill for those who's feet are not firmly planted in the 21st century.. and a boundless source of marvel, awe, beauty and inspiration for the rest of us.. thank you Carl Sagan and thank you QF.
I had to add that to my favorites. When I'm confronted by anthropocentrism I often say that mankind is no more or less meaningful or important to the universe than bacteria on the skin of an apple. Somehow this video seems a better way of getting that point across without insulting the anthropocentrist's sensibilities.
Where's this from? Any idea where I might find a transcript of it?
Its a mandala sand painting, they spend days even weeks using colored sand to create the designs. Then after they are done, to show the impermanence of life they sweep it up and pour it into a river or stream so that the healing energy can flow throughout the world.

What a terrific writer. His oration of his own words adds to the poetry.

He was a major influence in my life when I was a kid and his documentaries were what got me interested in science.

Me 2. Although I wasn't aware of him until after he was dead. I know have watched COSMOS many times and have purchased at least 5 of his books.

Any idea where I might find a transcript of it?

lol yeah kind of looks like it :)
Its a mandala sand painting, they spend days even weeks using colored sand to create the designs. Then after they are done, to show the impermanence of life they sweep it up and pour it into a river or stream so that the healing energy can flow throughout the world.
