thanks good tutorial, i also use erase tool to remove sharp parts i want to keep soft. Usually you want to sharpen eyes/eyelashes, eyebrows lips and noseholes!

If you click the red channel in channels with the apple key. you will create a selection invert that and use this as your mask, you will progressivly sharpen from the darks up. Many times sharper than this technique.

@Necrolitica Please don't expect miracles from Unsharp Mask in making your out-of-focus photos usable. It is very limited in what it can do with images that are not in focus coming out of the camera.

@yoyoyo1100 Sharpening is the relationship between light and dark pixels (why Edit>Fade... Mode: Luminosity gives good results after using the unsharp mask) - According to the manual, Radius: number of pixels surrounding the edge pixels that effect the sharpening. The larger the value, the more obvious the change. (Radius works on gaussian blur principles);

Amount: The amount that your increasing the contrast of the pixels by;

Threshold: Note vid has value set at 0. It's nasty and useless.

-high pass filter

-set blending mode to vivid or linear light

-reduce opacity if necessary (or copy layer for more sharpening)

You can now use a layer mask as well, to apply it only on the parts of the image you want
