Oh and the guitars at 1:45 ALWAYS cause the hairs to rise on the back of my neck. Such a perfect melody, and.. well damn just everything about this song is incredible.
This track and "The Saints Are Coming" by the Skids are probably the greatest UK punk singles ever recorded.Yes there were bands like Joy Division and Wire, but I think they were coming from a different angle.Oh and Magazines "Shot by Both Sides" -also awesome.
They never got the respect they deserved from their OWN audiences let alone the public at large. These four unassuming guys created something unique and brilliant.
The denouement to Pleasure and Pain remains one of the most beautiful (and heartbreaking) moments in popular music, far beyond what U2, with all that clout and bombast, could ever imagine.
@hugosalarm Sorry, that song is "High As You Can Go." By any name it's one of the great songs ever from a group that mesmerized, nearly always, with their genius.
@hugosalarm No, t'were Pleasure and Pain I originally referred to......"those colored lights are leading me. . . .is it me is it you? (Overwhelming. Can't repeat play it without the fear of falling apart)
'What Does Anything Mean?Basically' will be available from Blue Apple Music in mid-November '09 at deluxe edition remastered album version plus extra 2nd disc with unreleased or demo tracks.
@rhetorwit or by the time their music became widely accepted in the U.S., all these new bands have already ripped them off so much that they're back to where they started.
i had all their albums, then i had to hide them from the police in my ass and i haven't been able to find them since. now when i fart, it smells like nostalgia...
I first heard the Chameleons in the mid 80's, feckin marvelous, My brothers band do a good version of this song.....On you go...Up The Down Esculator..

I cant stop listening to this song, it is really good... anyone have any other suggestions by them?
also:
the guitars/bass/lyrical parts from 0:41 to 0:51, 1:15 to 1:27, and finally 2:35 to 2:49 are really incredible.

prozacpeople 1 year ago
@prozacpeople I am more of a passive Smiths fan and a huge Chameleons fan..but find it hard to see how both bands can even be compared.
Both admittedly have influential guitarists in Johnny Marr and Dave Fielding..but totally different styles of bands, The Smiths were never post-punk.
