It's great to hear his bass part on this, although I've never liked how he uses distortion. Being a Bongo player myself, I wish that he'd just use the natural tone of the instrument.
I have never liked his tone or playing style. IMO it sounds very sloppy because of the way he plays the instrument. You hear a lot of fret and pickup noise along with the notes. Now, this may be intentional on his part but not my cup of tea. I think he is a very talented player and he can play very fast. Billy Sheehan is an example of a player that plays a similar style but can articulate the notes cleanly.
@OkoPeeKee It's because of the mid scoop EQ style and playing much harder with the right hand, Billy plays HARD but not in the same way. Billy really plucks parallel to the string, John plucks and hits them. The smaller string spacing makes it harder to play like billy does without tiring ones self alot. Also Billy plays from the centre knuckle not from the palm knuckle like John so although they both use 3 fingers they do so in very different ways
@holg618 They offered to download the stems from their official website provided you had proof of purchase of A Dramatic Turn of Events. Awesome, right?
I think the new album is awesome! I'm not too fond of Beneath the Surface too much and feel that Build Me Up is somewhat mediocre. Apart from that, though, the album is an absolutely great!
And JM's role?
I absolutely LOVE the fact that you can actually hear what he is playing now! You can clearly tell he was more involved. Besides that though, I'd really like to hear him get a nice long solo again sometime. Or have a strictly bass/drum driven song. But that's just me being picky.
Myung doesn't play the bongo, you fucking idiots, he plays the bass!

@MlKEPORNTOY Bass? Are you kidding? All these years I thought Myung's role was interpretive dancer and harp player!

@OkoPeeKee It's also down to the Basses he uses, if you listen to his old Yamaha bass, it sounds a lot less sloppy.
