You'll get it But don't tap the stick to start it drag it and you'll feel the arc push it away just a little then you'll find the sweet spot. It is the hardest part of stick welding to get used to besides the feeling of your eyes burning because got flash burn. from not putting down your helmet before you strike the arc. That is a real big nasty problem.
@steveo928 thanks, I might need to anyway! Once I got better at arcing and welding a bead, I started welding the metal for my go kart frame (which is twice as thick and pretty good quality steel, obviously no rust or anything) but my first try on that I burned a big hole right through!
@spitzification14 yeah i kinda figured that out after playing around with it for a while, i've gotten a lot better at it since then anyway, it works way better than i could have hoped for though!
@ncrdisabled thanks yea i was using 3/32" rods and they worked really well after i got the hang of it...also im not too sure of the amperage but when i find my ammeter i'll put it up somewhere.

Get thinner electrodes, your arc will start much easier! :)

Nice hand made machine try using 1/16 inch welding sticks I have a old 220v welder
only goes to 80 amps due to a problem but it does work great with 1/16 sticks
