splatterhouse 3 is the best game of the series... it does away with the boring side scrolling bit. what made the first game decent were the creepy graphics and music + the insane difficulty. the emotional impact of the intro of part 2 is what made me play through this one, otherwise yeah, I can see your point

I disagree. Splatterhouse 3's hit detection compared to like Streets of Rage is just terrible. The vertical movement does nothing to avoid enemy attacks. It could be good, but was purely designed. A lot of 3 looked all the same, whereas in 2 you were in all kinds of environments with a lot of background gore.

1 (best) Splatterhouse 3

2 Splatterhouse (arcade)

3 Splatterhouse 2 (genesis)

SP2 isn't a bad game, it's just my least favorite.. more of a retread of part 1 with one new weapon type and scaled back graphics.

SP3 is not without its flaws either, but if you play through the whole game, you'll see the backgrounds are quite varied. The gameplay is just far less repetitive. There are alternate paths and secrets, as well as the cutscenes and multiple endings. It's just a fantastic game. Sure it could be better, but I enjoyed it a lot more than SP2. Each to his/her own, of course.

I think that German kid must be an influence on a subconscious level - that or the vid with the fat office worker who gets frustrated with his PC so much he gets up and smashes the keyboard into the monitor and kicks it around, as a curious yet nervous colleague in the next cubicle chances a look before ducking out of view again.

I find myself getting less and less patient with games these days. I just don't think there's enough time in life to spend agonising over some old shitty game.
