  • great!!! you couldn't explained it better, I love basil and have lots of garden to do it but when it gets to certain height it just starts turning brown til it dies but with this tips I'll keep trying til i get to have my own thanks

  • did you just say bay-s-il not bay-z-il?

  • great tips,

I have sowed my seeds 2 inch deep, and no wonder they are not coming up..

    I will try it again.

  • Useful video with excellent advice - I grow my own herbs also - but the 'Dalek' voice with the laryngitis vocal is pretty horrible

  • @Flanntheman1 I found it a bit off putting as well. When I viewed it it also seemed the voice was not in synch.

  • which variety of basil has the really strong flavour? I tried sweet genovese seed and it was ok and and some falvor but was not as strong as some of the supermarket stugg i have tried. There are so many different varieties.

  • I really enjoy watching all your videos.

I grew about 20 basil plants from seeds I saved & dried from a previous batch of basil that I bought in a home center. The basil form the home center was marginally successful. The plants from the seeds however looked fantastic. They grew very full, healthy looking but when I made pesto with them, it was awful.

Any idea what may have caused them to taste so bad?

thanks and keep the great videos coming.

  • @lennyf1957 I think i have the answer. Whenever basil plants grow they flourish, one important step is pinch the flowers, so that the growing continues and the FLAVOR doesn't change. The flourishing changes the flavor in a wrong way.

  • @Jagonomic

the plants I grew from the harvested seeds produced virtually no "seed tops". Maybe 1 or 2 out of the dozen or so plants. The plants I buy from the home center make tons of seeds and I continuously pinch off the tops.

    thanks for the reply

  • stomata, dont clog it

  • but to be honest good looking as she is , here natural voice must be good as well

  • Her voice drives me INSANE !! AAAARRRRG

  • @MVmensCBS SHE'S A ROBOT ;)

  • @MVmensCBS Man Sometimes I think I am the only one when I hear girls talk like that , they think they are cute just like they felt when they became teen agers I guess and they want to keep sounding like that.

well I says to them grow up before you get old and your voice would sound like a man and it'll be too late then

    Oooops ......LOL

  • @MVmensCBS Quaak Quaaak Quaak

  • Hey chibmeister. your vid is private????

megafka. Grind up some used and cleaned egg shells then sprinkle around plant. The egg shells cut snails and worms or any other creepy crawler. They also add some calcium to the plant.

If you don't eat eggs your local nursery might carry a product like shared glass or plastic. Anything sharp to cut the critters.

  • bayzil eh?

  • if i post here then i can come back to look again that simple .jj7

  • the problem i have is that snails keep eating my basil! how do i keep them off???

  • @hitachi088 It will still grow up, just not as much. You're only pinching the flower buds.

  • what brand soil did you use in this video?

  • What a beautiful voice she has

  • @dcvalentine1782 of an angel

  • basil roots are extensive, my container just ain't enough to hold even one single basil plant. btw i'm growing thai basil

  • weed is a weed thenewupsetters

  • NIGGUH YOU DA BITCHEZ

  • Is onion herb?

  • It's 'basil' not 'bayzil'. And it's herbs, not 'erbs'.

  • she's lip syncing lol

  • I would not recommend using fertilizer on basil. It's really not necessary and it ruins the aromatic oils inside the plant, which is the best part about basil!

  • I thought cilantro was the most popular herb

  • Is that a man talking?

  • I don't see why you would spray fish emultion on someting your going to eat leater, yuck. put it into the soil not on the leaves.

  • i should have seen this video before planting basil yesterday.. my first attempt never passed the germination stage.. :(

  • nice

  • HER VOICE IS SOOOOOOO FAKE, BUT THE INFO IS GOOD

  • This is a good video and showed me a few things I was doing wrong with my basil plants. Thanks!

  • i probably should of watched this video before i bought my basil plants from walmart and let them wilt because i have them sitting in the garage. *brown frown :(*

  • I can't stand her voice.

  • @Dall5000 I can't stand the way she pronounces BAsil

  • This is a truly excellent video. Thank you!

  • You need to sync the audio with the video...If you like I will do it for you...

  • This video was very descriptive--- and I'm glad. Although some componets are optional, some people care to have the most ideal conditions, especially in cooler climates. I would rather use compost than not if she says so... She obviously knows what she's doing, did you get a good look at her basil? very healthy. Also I like the demonstration for pruning basil, I was hesitant before because I didnt really know what I was doing lol Thank you so much for you efforts, great video.

  • jeeze! i just put them in there put soil on top and watered them and they growed very healthy. Way to complicated. the rain does the watering!

  • you can foliar feed edible plants but you need to wash it really good before you eat it.

  • I still don't see what she means by a "set of leaves"

  • Just planted my first basil plant today, didn't do it exactly like this. I hope it grows!

  • excuse me, you're making planting so complicated... :(

Basil can grown in any kind of soil not just in a compost

just you need to water it regularly and give it more sun

try this ..no need for fertilizing or anything

you'll end up with the most beautiful Basil in your life

I'm planting lots and lots of Basil in this way

  • like totally....

valley girl accents are way too annoying to tolerate

  • well I'm just starting out ,thanx 4 the vid

  • Please say "compost" instead of compozed.

  • It' s pronounced 'Bazil' not base'ill and it is a 'Herb' not a Erb!

  • dont foliar spray leafs with fertilizer you are going to eat. only ever spray the lefs with water never chemicals. its quite concerning that some food is foliar fed for supermarkets. never feed edible plant through the leaves as you will be

  • @Lunarlaserranging There are lots of organic fertilizers that are great foliar feeders. This fish emulsion is great for foliar feeding. Would be even better with liquid molases.

  • @Lunarlaserranging What you say is true regarding chemical sprays, however a natural foliar spray such as kelp has a very beneficial effect. I use a certified organic king kelp foliar spray on all my green veggies, and it adds many trace minerals and nutrients to my plants.

  • @Lunarlaserranging or you use all natural fertz

  • @Lunarlaserranging fish emulsion is organic ,and it's a wonderful foliar spray ...

  • @Lunarlaserranging can you spray water? onto the leaf and the soil? (tap water)

  • @Lunarlaserranging I believe fertilizer on eatable herbs is questionable, i would like to know though how to prevent flyes from messing up my basil.

  • @Lunarlaserranging dats why use a organic ferts. and ofcourse wash them foliar feeding a plant with water does nothing

  • Nice video

  • A compound found in cannabis & in herbs such as BASIL & oregano could help to treat inflammatory bowel diseases & arthritis, Swiss scientists believe.

(E)-beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is an aromatic sesquiterpene that has used for many years as a food additive because of its peppery flavour. The researchers now say that it interacts selectively with one of two cannabinoid receptors, CB2, blocking the chemical signals that lead to inflammation without triggering cannabis's mood-altering effects.

  • Typically, actually, almost always I am nothing less than annoyed with EHow. However, this video I have given 5*****.

  • amazing!!

  • Thankyou for your very informative video. I'm really looking forward to making my own pesto at home, from my balcony grown basil.

  • Something nobody else has mentioned and neither did the author of the video. Pinching is essential! BUT you can also VERY easily get new plants by rooting the cuttings by immersing the stems in clean water. Best to use scissors for a clean cut. After about 5 days to a week transplant into soil. The plant will wilt for a few days after transplanting but will quickly become vigorous. I have over 30 basil plants presently all from cuttings of one mother plant and 1st and 2nd gen cuttings!

  • fuckoff don't judge me

  • Very informative! This is my first time to grow basil from seed and did not know some of her great tips. Thanks!

  • I'm an experienced gardener, but I learned some good information here. I can't understand why some people feel it's so necessary to criticize someone's voice. She's just giving her advice, and you feel justified in making hurtful comments -- why, why?

  • This video was so much better than some of the others I found on here for basil and herbs.

  • I better get to pinching.

  • This video was very informative. I don't know why people have to be so rude. It's not like she claims to be a professional hostess on a cable show. Give her a break.

  • Lol, so true

I remember in Geography we saw this video and there was this lady who would say "Raacks" very 4 seconds (she was talking about rocks)

  • shhf

  • Thanks for posting this video as I hadn't a clue how to grow basil properly as last year I had skinny things which were not too pretty. ;)

    Drew.

  • This reminds me of the last time i watched an old Japanese martial arts movie !!!!

  • I grew a ton of basil last year and didn't use fertilizer once. Of course I planted with Miracle-Gro potting soil so maybe that's why it grew so well. It's VERY IMPORTANT to do the pinching, SO many people don't do this.

  • @Perno13 if you pinch, do the plant still grow up? or only get bushier?

  • Thank you for the vid! Now I know why I've considered basil a failure on my balcony garden - I didn't protect them from the cold enough. Poor basil babies!

  • i know!!! i was thinking the same.

  • No kidding. That voice made it impossible for me to keep watching. :(

  • Yeah, she should really go get a new voice. I mean of all the voices out there she had to pick that one. What a worthless comment. douche

  • Gheez, your critical!

  • doesnt the fish fertalizer change the tast of the basil? how long before harvest do you stop?

  • it's so funny how the Americans pronounce herb as erb and basil as bazil. lol it's sounds so weird.

  • lol, you got the erb part right, but they say basil more like 'baycill'.

so strange.. I love the yanks!

  • She is very nasal.

  • She should really get a spray bottle that mists instead of one that shoots a stream.

  • Is that better??

I just dump a bucket of water on there.

no wonder half my plants died last year....teehee.

  • I have a sweet basil plant, and it's the only plant that's survived 5 consecutive days of summer heat wave of 40 degrees Celsius temperature. All the other plants died, including the summer pumpkin plants! I tell you, the basil tree is such a survivalist tree. It's amazing!

  • lol

  • @TheNewUpsetters Actually it's coffee. Nice try though kiddo...

  • @TheNewUpsetters Actualy it is bananas then weed.

  • @TheNewUpsetters OTHER THA DANDELION...NOT MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM.

  • the seed did not grow . so sad.

  • lol super annoying voice

  • Love gardening!

  • thank you so much.

  • This is exactly the help I needed! Great instructional video, very informational. Thank you! I'm off to plant...

  • just curious, mine sprouted before two weeks, more like 3 days actually , is that normal ?

  • I know it's been 4 months, but...

    Haha, well done.

  • i bought a container of basil to cook with. after striping off the leaves i noticed that the top of one of the stalks had a small cluster of flowering buds and another had athick stalk.i planted it in mirical grow and to my amazement its growing and green. i water it in the morning and its been 2 weeks. can you tell me what to do next i just cant beleve its actully thriving. its getting small leaves on the top. thank you

  • Thanks for the upload

  • she is cute

  • actually I like the American English pronounciation !

  • check out my son planting basil - he can pronounce basil properly too

  • So you are telling me in USA they spells Herbs lie this erbs, NO they dont so stop trying to pretend you mix American English with French, its H.E.R.B.S end of story. And bye the way is why is you have to call a cycle shop a cyclery, a vinetard a winery, and a bakery and eatery ??? go figure

  • They can call it whatever the hell they want. STFU.

  • Cilantro is the most popular herb.

  • Thank you. That was great.

  • Baiserl ??? whats that ? erbs ? its Basil herbs with a H, degrees F whats that ? everyone uses degrees C

Apart from the annoying bastardisation of the English language its good

  • Ever heard of American English?

  • Great tips!

  • very informative thanks!

  • cool..thnx..

  • BRAVO! THANKS!
