great!!! you couldn't explained it better, I love basil and have lots of garden to do it but when it gets to certain height it just starts turning brown til it dies but with this tips I'll keep trying til i get to have my own thanks
which variety of basil has the really strong flavour? I tried sweet genovese seed and it was ok and and some falvor but was not as strong as some of the supermarket stugg i have tried. There are so many different varieties.
I grew about 20 basil plants from seeds I saved & dried from a previous batch of basil that I bought in a home center. The basil form the home center was marginally successful. The plants from the seeds however looked fantastic. They grew very full, healthy looking but when I made pesto with them, it was awful.
Any idea what may have caused them to taste so bad?
@lennyf1957 I think i have the answer. Whenever basil plants grow they flourish, one important step is pinch the flowers, so that the growing continues and the FLAVOR doesn't change. The flourishing changes the flavor in a wrong way.
the plants I grew from the harvested seeds produced virtually no "seed tops". Maybe 1 or 2 out of the dozen or so plants. The plants I buy from the home center make tons of seeds and I continuously pinch off the tops.
@MVmensCBS Man Sometimes I think I am the only one when I hear girls talk like that , they think they are cute just like they felt when they became teen agers I guess and they want to keep sounding like that.
well I says to them grow up before you get old and your voice would sound like a man and it'll be too late then
megafka. Grind up some used and cleaned egg shells then sprinkle around plant. The egg shells cut snails and worms or any other creepy crawler. They also add some calcium to the plant.
If you don't eat eggs your local nursery might carry a product like shared glass or plastic. Anything sharp to cut the critters.
I would not recommend using fertilizer on basil. It's really not necessary and it ruins the aromatic oils inside the plant, which is the best part about basil!
i probably should of watched this video before i bought my basil plants from walmart and let them wilt because i have them sitting in the garage. *brown frown :(*
This video was very descriptive--- and I'm glad. Although some componets are optional, some people care to have the most ideal conditions, especially in cooler climates. I would rather use compost than not if she says so... She obviously knows what she's doing, did you get a good look at her basil? very healthy. Also I like the demonstration for pruning basil, I was hesitant before because I didnt really know what I was doing lol Thank you so much for you efforts, great video.
dont foliar spray leafs with fertilizer you are going to eat. only ever spray the lefs with water never chemicals. its quite concerning that some food is foliar fed for supermarkets. never feed edible plant through the leaves as you will be
@Lunarlaserranging There are lots of organic fertilizers that are great foliar feeders. This fish emulsion is great for foliar feeding. Would be even better with liquid molases.
@Lunarlaserranging What you say is true regarding chemical sprays, however a natural foliar spray such as kelp has a very beneficial effect. I use a certified organic king kelp foliar spray on all my green veggies, and it adds many trace minerals and nutrients to my plants.
A compound found in cannabis & in herbs such as BASIL & oregano could help to treat inflammatory bowel diseases & arthritis, Swiss scientists believe.
(E)-beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is an aromatic sesquiterpene that has used for many years as a food additive because of its peppery flavour. The researchers now say that it interacts selectively with one of two cannabinoid receptors, CB2, blocking the chemical signals that lead to inflammation without triggering cannabis's mood-altering effects.
Something nobody else has mentioned and neither did the author of the video. Pinching is essential! BUT you can also VERY easily get new plants by rooting the cuttings by immersing the stems in clean water. Best to use scissors for a clean cut. After about 5 days to a week transplant into soil. The plant will wilt for a few days after transplanting but will quickly become vigorous. I have over 30 basil plants presently all from cuttings of one mother plant and 1st and 2nd gen cuttings!
I'm an experienced gardener, but I learned some good information here. I can't understand why some people feel it's so necessary to criticize someone's voice. She's just giving her advice, and you feel justified in making hurtful comments -- why, why?
This video was very informative. I don't know why people have to be so rude. It's not like she claims to be a professional hostess on a cable show. Give her a break.
I grew a ton of basil last year and didn't use fertilizer once. Of course I planted with Miracle-Gro potting soil so maybe that's why it grew so well. It's VERY IMPORTANT to do the pinching, SO many people don't do this.
Thank you for the vid! Now I know why I've considered basil a failure on my balcony garden - I didn't protect them from the cold enough. Poor basil babies!
I have a sweet basil plant, and it's the only plant that's survived 5 consecutive days of summer heat wave of 40 degrees Celsius temperature. All the other plants died, including the summer pumpkin plants! I tell you, the basil tree is such a survivalist tree. It's amazing!
