If you keep your face up you increase your drag. Just duck the waves as they come. Also, if you keep your chin down you tend to elevate your legs more. Keeping your body flat in the water. (decreasing drag)
I, personally, switch to a breast stroke when I want to pop up and get re-oriented.
It will all boil down to experience through trial and error as to what works for you. Find a club or group swim to join!
The big thing about swimming in open water they don't key in on is sighting. Without a lane line to follow you have to be vigilante in making sure you're swimming straight. It's very easy to veer off course if you have a stronger side, or favor one side to breathe from.
You can't rely on just one landmark, because you can be in line with it 360 degrees around. Pick two points, and stay orientated with them both.

And if you are swimmin with face in water, is there a special "stroke" or a special way of changin pace, to take a look at the landmarks?
