My view is this. I think government should keep out of the marriage business. Since marriage is a religious concept anyway, let's introduce civil unions for gays and for opposite-sex couples as well, and let religions keep marriage. That way, gays will have the same rights as everyone else. France is already doing this.
Gays have civil unions in 9 states and Wash DC, but they do not carry the same legal benefits as marriage (including social security, immigration rights, shared medical insurance, etc.).
Since religion and tradition are hindering progress in this area, I think we should allow civil unions the same legal rights as marriage, but open them up to opposite-sex couples as well.
That way, the government recognizes all couples equally, and marriage can be relegated to the religious custom it is.

You really need to get the facts. Worldwide AIDs is spread pretty evenly. However, in the developed world AIDs is almost exclusively found in the drug and gay community. Hardly found in the straight community at all. I make no comment on what the implications of this are. I dont think AIDs has anything to do with the debate on prop 8 AT ALL. The facts are that if prop 8 fails, those of us who believe in traditional family values will have a hard time teaching those same values on our kids because we can no longer pull our kids from the classroom in school if pro homosexuality is discussed. Yes he did. See 'History of the Church' Vol 2, page 182. Joseph Smith called a meeting, and told them that the Lord's return was at hand and would happen no later than 56 years from then. He said that in 1835. 56 years later would have put the Lord's Second Coming in 1891.
See also D&C 130:14-17, where God tells Joseph Smith he will see Jesus again when he is 85 years old. Smith died when he was 38, so that didn't happen either. Not that it makes any difference to you. I'm just sayin'.

For example, why does Jesus condone slavery? He said it's okay to beat a disobedient slave (but not too severely). Notice how he accepts the concept of slavery, and using physical violence to discipline them.
The Bible has no cause to be an authority on anything.

Well, whoever said that is insane. Sex is an activity between consenting adults only. Molesting children will never be considered ok, unless we legalize rape too.
My view is this. I think government should keep out of the marriage business. Since marriage is a religious concept anyway, let's introduce civil unions for gays and for opposite-sex couples as well, and let religions keep marriage. That way, gays will have the same rights as everyone else. France is already doing this.

Gays have civil unions in 9 states and Wash DC, but they do not carry the same legal benefits as marriage (including social security, immigration rights, shared medical insurance, etc.).
Since religion and tradition are hindering progress in this area, I think we should allow civil unions the same legal rights as marriage, but open them up to opposite-sex couples as well.
That way, the government recognizes all couples equally, and marriage can be relegated to the religious custom it is.

Of course, one day too soon my children will enter the real world. They will have the foundation and principles instilled in them as I have from my upbringing. This will remain their foundation. Do you feel that keeping your child out of school is harmful to your children more so than just discussing the topic later when your children get home. You really need to get the facts. Worldwide AIDs is spread pretty evenly. However, in the developed world AIDs is almost exclusively found in the drug and gay community. Hardly found in the straight community at all. I make no comment on what the implications of this are. I dont think AIDs has anything to do with the debate on prop 8 AT ALL. But since you brought up AIDS you might as well get your facts right.

Actually, the persons comment in which I was replying to was the one who brought up AIDS in relation to the gay community. And yes, I have proven facts that the AIDs population is lower in the homosexual community than in the rest of the 'communities'(these are only the people that we know have AIDs). The facts are that if prop 8 fails, those of us who believe in traditional family values will have a hard time teaching those same values on our kids because we can no longer pull our kids from the classroom in school if pro homosexuality is discussed. People always want the parents to do more for their kids but this will impose severe limitations for them. Also, gay couples as is, have the same rights and privledges as married couples look it up.

At the core of the argument is not hypocritical posturing by religious types who don't always walk it the way they talk it (how much of a sacrament is marriage when there are escalating divorce rates and adultery even amongst those who are religious) it's the fact that a constitution (state or federal) should NEVER be used to take away peoples rights. The last time we did that was when we had prohibition and we all know how successful that was.
