@ttyradio - They were on the Jimmy Fallon show recently, but just reunited to play that show. They've remastered a few albums and are re-releasing them on vinyl (which is awesome).
@MrNwango I don't eye-roll at how "punk" has been used since the 90s because it hides how classic punk music was subversive in many ways - it was more than making a fashion statement, or hating your parents, which isn't subversive at all. (Maybe it's all been a giant conspiracy to suck the true rebellious urge out of young people?) It's not a comment on the music - which in this case I liked - but on the rest of the world.
Saw them at the "9:30 Club" in DC and it was amazing! It was 1996, and Nada Surf opened for them, even better.
Tried to see them at the "Black Cat", but couldn't get tickets, and we met the bass and guitar player outside, and they couldn't get us in. That sucked.
I just got an email from Zach Barocas who allowed me to refer to one of his blogs in an essay Im doing about Jawbox and independant music! I am well stoked :->
yea, two guitars, unverifiable tunnings....i would have to sit and listen this over and over again for days to conceive a possible rendition in tabs. unfortunately i dont have the time nor the drugs
is it just me or does anyone else find this album impossible to sound dated? play this now and it'll put today's "popular" bands to shame...brilliant songwriting is simply timeless.
I don't think grunge was ever considered punk really, maybe the people you know. While Nirvana was original, most of their songs were more poppish with the catchy themes and stuff, and as for Pearl Jam, they're are amazing, but the fact their genre and intention is different you can never really compare the two. I respect Pearl Jam for trying to fight becoming mainstream. This is a great band and song. Plus, I don't believe in punk, if you call yourself a punk you're not one, labels don't exist.
...all the "punks" i know don't have any idea of what a great band Jawbox (and Fugazi) were, can't believe they call themselves punk when they've never heard about this awesome 90's acts!!!
tee hee!!! seeing j. singing into the air in the formulaic "sing to the camera..." too cute! i miss them tremendously. funny how when a band's music is so significant and a part of a chunk of your life that they sorta feel like they belong to you. if you know what i mean. it all becomes a part of you. damn. i miss them so much!!!!!!!!!
Excellent! Thanks for posting! Great quality! I wish they would get back together but J. Robbins has some excellent post-projects with Burning Airlines and now with Channels.
One of the best 90's bands. This is why I love 90's music. Hard hitting, thoughtful lyrics, roaring guitar riffs and real melodies. Technicality came second to melody. I like all of their stuff but there's no denying the melodical evolution they went through. The harmonies on this song are MMM! perfect!
@Errorkin Walt Mink, Shudder to Think, Jawbox, the Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Slint, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub....
Totally in agreement that the self titled album ruled. Sorry, both the major label albums kicked more ass than the dischord releases. Novelty is prtty fucking awesome though, especially the song Static.
the s/t was a pretty terrible album but this song and the ones on the pre release 7" are good. they only showed this video 2 times on mtv.
I have to totally disagree wih this, i LOVED the self title it was atlantic and their lack of promotion that made this a terrible album. but i dont liek the mtv part BOOOOOO (N)
Jawbox was the only reason I ever picked up a guitar in the first place. So I have to thank you for posting this, and reminding me of the genesis of the years of joy playing music has brought me (even if I'm STILL terrible at it).
ummmm. who is the putz that said j robins stuff is going downhill? First listen to Grippe and then to the later albums, much more polished. Plus Texas is the reason's album sounded great, produced by j. J Robbins needs to get his name out more! Anybody needing jawbox mp3's i have every one. I know how hard it is to get their CD's!
the s/t was a pretty terrible album but this song and the ones on the pre release 7" are good. they only showed this video 2 times on mtv. sucked i was hoping they would stay semi popular after fyoss where they would keep making music but indeed after listening to this album often im very glad they quit when they did. it was going very wrong... straight into BA which is rather bad imo. channels is somewhat better but still no where close to jawbox

I love it. The question what's punk or not is as dumb as conservatives are. They're like music-nazis. And i say that as a german....

Too bad Jawbox broke up. At least Kim & J. Robbins have their backup gigs as detectives' Iams & Stabler on Law & Order.

Jawbox were so good they transcended the 90's.
Just timeless!

hell yeah! can't pick a favorite song J. Robbins is a part of, but this is way way up there, probably in large part due to the bass in this one!

yeah man, I think there's a lot more punk in those bands then in what is widely accepted as punk's child which is grunge
but I find more punk in jawbox and fugazi than I'll ever find in Nirvana or Pearl Jam
