  • This is a beautiful poignant song ...One of this artist best tracks.

  • OK, these twins are REALLY creepy.

  • Ok 370,000 views and nobody comments on the creepiness of the syncronized swaying twins?

  • @tanelin They have a bunch of times. You just have to go through all the comments. BTW I posted this video years ago right around when YouTube first started exploding. And over the years they have sent me several messages about putting advertizements on my videos and I always declined. Now it seems they're just adding ads anyway without our consent.

  • @jzenman that would be because youtube, like everyone else running a service, are money grabbing CUNTS.

  • @tanelin Those kids are pretty creepy alright...but then Elvis is a little creepy too, in a good way I guess!!

  • I've got this on a 45...love this version!

  • Great song and all that but, is it just the drink or is that Scott Gorham on the old steel guitar ?

  • still listening to my favourite song, after all these years. who would have ever guessed it would come true for me! still love you elvis, and i dont have to move to far coz "i dont want to go to chelsea, the reason being there will never be a good year for the roses there, i plan on growing daffs and my aim is?........true

  • It's been, what? ... over 30 years since this came out? .... It's STILL one of the best covers I've ever heard, and still great to listen to any time.

  • 21 dislikes....more x-factor fans....great song,,performed by a great artist..

  • a good song to chill to.

  • Greatness. I saw Elvis play this song at the Rhyman. Clearly loose and unrehearsed. At the end he asked Jerry Chesnut in the front row to stand up and take a bow. He did. And tipped his cowboy hat too.

  • thank you uploader.

  • What i love the most about Costello is how he can take these long poetic lines and make them so melodious and smooth...Power To yah Elvis!!!!

  • add me as friend jzenman i like ur vids!

  • You nailed Elvis C, far better than the original and G Jones. My favourite track on the Blue album.

  • @flatpackmatt Both versions are great, i like Elvis C's a bit better, but i don't think saying far better does justice to George Jones. If you're dead drunk both of em will make you cry like a baby ;-)

  • @jetogill i love the counting crows version

  • roy west

  • Sometimes it is the singer that makes the song. Once in a while, it is just the song. This is a case of the latter. Elvis Costello is great but this song is so good, anyone can sing it well.

  • CLASS -

  • This Chesnut classic is so gorgeous and so melancholy. Loved the

George Jones version and love this version too. Brilliant delivery in the

    style that only EC can.

  • love Elvis Costello. seems like everything he does i like, every song he writes (or didn't write in this case, but whatev) i love. which is quite rare for me, i only really like 2 or 3 songs on an album but with Elvis i love them all. im a 19 yr old girl and my friends actually can't believe the fact I'd rather listen to oldies rather than shit pop that's around today which has no thought put into it. wow, long post but true!

  • My ole buddy Jerry Chesnut wrote this after coming home early one morning to find his wife had left him. He told me he'd written a few songs and was making some money, he and his wife bought a nice house. He always wanted a rose garden, and he planted it outside of a big picture window. He thought to himself " everything else has gone to shit but it was a good year for the roses ". He sat down at the kitchen table and 20 minutes later he had another hit on his hands.

  • @Longhammer37214 Excuse my ignorance....but i wish this to be true...........respect

  • @MrTaxijoe True story.

  • @Longhammer37214 Didn't George Jones write that song???

  • @Longhammer37214 Didn't George Jones write that song???

  • @Longhammer37214 What a wunderfull story, a superb song it is !!

  • @Longhammer37214

That's the most awesome story, ever. Long live American music - it's all we got.

  • Creepy twins? You think I'm psycho don't you mama... This clip is aces!

  • Love your singing . Here´s mine :)

  • It's Very Nice Song

  • What year was this 86?

  • @MrsRig

1981. One of the best years for music!

  • @MrsRig think it was 82 pal

  • my boyfriend loves this song!!!

  • EC covering George Jones. Perfection. I could do without those creepy twins in the video, though. The song is superb.

  • He only won the 1978 Rolling Stone Album of the year (My Aim is True) and is regarded as the poet laureate of rock and roll. Sounds like you need to listen to a few more of his albums. Maybe you were too busy listening to some death metal or rap and his discography just passed you by. LOL

  • Both Alan Jackson and George Jones recorded this song, but I do not know did this song first? I think it may had been George Jones.

  • Whats with the 2 young Blue boys (if theyre girls, theyre meant to look like boys). They look hypnotised the way they sway in tandem. why was Elvis so consumed by "Roses" in his music? is there allegory to be had here?

  • @TheHeuristicIslander

Don't go down that route FFS.

    That wasn't even funny.

Sick fucker comparing a classic song with perverts.

    Shame on you

  • @TheHeuristicIslander LOL! I wouldn't put it past him, we already know he's a talentless racist...

Now seriously, anyone who likes this guy, what is the fucking appeal? There are no good melodies, the lyrics are trite, and the only actual hook I can recall from the guy is that annoying organ thump from "Pump It Up". Just because the critics rank the guy a "classic" doesn't mean it has to have any merit at all.

  • @KingCrimson776 A friend who likes Costello thinks that he was talented at one point. this is what led "Them" to him.you know, having the ear of the public is a powerful thing, a coveted thing by some. In the end, he sold out, for the lifestyle, for the peace of it no doubt. But this selling out carries a price beyond the material. ...Im not saying he was into *That* but from this video it sure as hell looks like it. Reminds me of the Haiitian Voodoo Priests and the "Zombie" victims........

  • Funny how. I don't even care.

  • The original poster mentioned the guitar Elvis is playing. It's one of Danny Ferrington's, part of a matching suite of three instruments he built for Elvis that includes a small guitar (also with Elvis's name inlaid on the neck) and a fretless acoustic bass (with his initials inlaid on the body). Ferrington has build guitars for lots of great players, possibly most famously for Richard Thompson and Kurt Cobain.

  • Those are not girls. You guys are retarded.

  • they are girls?!!? You sure?

  • Wat een geweldig nummer is dit toch!!!!

  • Bellisima

  • So many wonderful records made from Nashville.

  • the background vocals of the two boys are awesome

  • They are girls :-)

  • @dripsey3 no doubt...lmao!

  • I have always liked this song. Reminds me of many years ago when it first come out. Those were the days!

  • What's the story with the kids? Any idea why the director decided to make them look so sad and restless? Are they supposed to be, like, emblematic of domestic decay?

  • Loved this. So cool in his "Trust" glasses and Steve playing violin because there was no piano - very funny. Elvis makes this his own song.

  • Elvis is the king [ this Elvis i mean ].

  • One of many great songs EC has performed over the years - cheers for posting this. There doesn't seem to be many other performances of this song on youtube - if anyone has anything from any old UK music shows please post them.

  • The song is so soulful and yet some cretins focus on the visual.

  • @ponyshowharmonica the visuals are there for a reason. What gives you the right to call anyone Cretins for Questioning what is put before them? Maybe you should look deeper than the surface?

  • @TheHeuristicIslander Oh how sweet, another self absorbed pseudo intellectual offering me his wisdom. Back in the day, most videos were made quickly and little attention was given to content. I can't personally speak for this one but that is how it was. Now go contemplate the metaphysical implications of you pulling your head out of your ass. Git

  • 1 of my faves from young declan. thanx 4 postin.

  • Captainleg07 u had better shut ur mouth RIGHT NOW because one of those

"freaky kids " happen 2 be my mother u BUM !! so u better not insult my mum again ! just because im 12 doesnt mean i cant be violent !!

  • Genius video ... but then one would expect that from young Master Declan ...

  • Elvis kind of freaked Nashville out when he recorded this CD down that way ...

  • Yeah, its like he presented them with their own baby and a paternity suit. "How did such a beautiful baby come from an ugly mother like that?"

  • those kids are freaky man

  • Yeah, this video has returned!!

  • John McFee also played for the Doobie Brothers, and is still touring with them (as of summer 2009). Great multi-instrumentalist. Had not seen this before. thanks for posting.

  • my dads favourite record rip dad

  • one of the very rare times that a cover is as good as the original classic.

he may not be THE elvis, but he sure is AN elviis.

  • effortless talent from the unique elvis costello

  • If you like this song check out the whole album....."Almost Blue." I'm a big fan of E.C., very original and talented man.

  • It's not him. Tom Petty has never dyed his hair.

  • It's John McFee playing the pedal steel.

  • what year was this what a song from the past

  • 1981

  • oops my bad....wrong elvis

  • The pedal steel player looks exactly like Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham, does anyone know if that's him?

  • No, he is John McFee. Ha has palyed steel for Costello before, but also for Van Morrison etc.

  • Sends a shiver up my spine this one. eorge Jones version is excellent, but Elvis did it perfectly.

  • Appreciate this guy now because you'll never see a better song/video again ever.Trust me.

  • RIP elvis

  • Elvis is alive! What the hell? :)))

  • BTW, to all those who are applauding Elvis for this song, George Jones wrote and sang this long ago.

  • Actually, Jerry Chesnut wrote the song. He also wrote T-R-O-U-B-L-E that Elvis Presley and Travis Tritt recorded.

  • You are right. But GJ made it famous, I think.

  • Brilliant !!!

  • he reminds me so much of Buddy Holly

  • Something about a Juliane in Colorado, I forget.

  • 5 *****

    Brings back memorys

    Amazing artist.

    Thx 4 the upload

  • love this song....makes feel a little sad but that's cool....

  • the main question here is .....why was it such a good year for the roses? seems illogical.

  • Awsome song.....why are SO MANY small minded people scathing of country music.....THIS IS JUST MUSICAL GENIUS from a man who started in the "punk" era....good job there are real musical artists like Elvis Costello

  • Abso-fricking-lutely! I do not limit myself to ANY genre...my collection is wide & eclectic... you are apt to find Vivaldi, Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Buffett, Frank Sinatra, Hank Williams, Sr. & a wide, wide swath of everything else, from show tunes to kiddie songs on my shelves! Music speaks to my soul...and I like what I like...don't care what the genre may be...& I hate labels..& am distrustful of those who discount music because of the genre someone else gave it! Carry on!

  • Oh so true, BrainBabe. My sentiments exactly. Well said.

  • get over it lad

  • George Jones Did.

  • George recorded it but it was Jerry Chesnut that penned the song. Back in the late 60's or early 70's I believe. George and Alan Jackson do a great rendition of this great tune but Elvis' is the best in my opinion. What's cool is that Elvis worked with Billy Shirrill...George's producer!

  • did he write this

  • Loved the song long before I ever saw this (lame) video. Has married-suburban melancholy, boredom, and apathy ever sounded so appealing? I don't think so. In this and certain other songs, EC's characters describe their flaws perfectly and yet seem totally unaware of them. Just brilliant.

  • Agree. Though I love better this thing by George Jones with Alan Jackson. There are the few you never know, to laugh or cry. This is one of the best of such kind.

  • Beautiful

  • Hermosa cancion!! Bellisima!! I love this song so much,I get tears in my eyes from it!

  • pure class

  • happy birthday Elvis

  • Elvis' version of this song just breaks my heart. He makes it extremely romantic and you can just picture him being so baffled that he doesn't know what to say... Don't know how he does it but every song he sings moves me...

  • A very good version!

    Thanks!

  • This is so insane LOL. I love how Elvis Costello at this time was completely off the wall. He's sat on an arm chair next to two young twins as he sings/ Its just... so weird. and I'm surprised no ones brought this up lol

  • TOTALLY. This video is INSANE and it's like no one's noticed! LMFAO

  • boy that brings back memories of time spent with grandparents :) lovely ..

  • Facking genius.

  • Declan, you are a legend

  • better than the orig

  • Nails....................

  • Got to be one of the best songs ever.

  • a delicious song.

  • Strange videoclip but great song

  • Its the PSG that makes this track for me. :-)

  • Best cover of this song that I have ever heard

  • listen to allan jackson THATs the best cover of this song, so i assume you havnt heard that one. this is a good cover but not the best

  • This was one of 12 songs recorded by Costello on his Country covers album Almost Blue. The original LP appeared with a label warning potential buyers: "This album contains Country & Western music and may cause offense to narrow minded listeners." Costello recalled in Q Magazine March 2008: "That was (label boss) Jake Riviera's idea. He liked to be provocative. That sticker really made me laugh.

  • holy shit that was blingin fresh.

  • aaaargh nick jonas? from the worst band evr?

  • i know right! nick got me into elvis costello lol

  • I met the man who wrote this song the other day. He lives here in Nashville now. Jerry Chesnut, I asked him about this song. He said he'd written a few songs and was making some money for the first time. He bought a house and always wanted roses in his garden. He came home from being out carousing and his wife had left him. He looked out a picture window and thought to himself " Well everything else has gone to shit but it was a good year for the roses.

  • cheers mate, thats a great story and very rock and roll or country, is it true, i hope so, thanks again 4 the info

  • Yes sir absolutely true. Jerry also wrote T-R-O-U-B-LE. Elvis recorded it in '75. He wears a necklace that Elvis gave him, it a TCOB with a lightning bolt on it made of gold. Elvis Presley is the Elvis I'm referring to. He told me some cool stories about Elvis and Scotty Moore who played for Elvis and also lives here in middle Tennessee.

  • Jerry said he grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and wrote this song start to finish in less than 5 minutes. He said he believes there are great songs floating around us all the time, and every once in a while G-d allows some of us to reach up and grab one. True story.

  • I love the way you can't bring yourself to type the word..GOD !!

  • very romantic! this song is blessed by something divine and not of this earth

  • good song. I just like the way he sings. Country, rock, whatever

  • I think at the time this album came out it was thought Elvis to do a country album was abit odd ( although it is one of his best productions). The video represented a psuedo mod-punk band plopped down in a upperscale family living room, paid tribute to the sarcasm..then again maybe the producer had some nephews needing a break into show biz..(shrugs)

  • this is nice <3 <3 <3

  • Very Great

  • Elivis Costello is a HUGE George Jones fan.

  • brilliant ver y underated artist

  • ha ha ha ha! I just laugh my ASS off every time I see this video! Who are those kids and why do they start swaying? ha ha ha. Good song but...?

  • Haven't heard this in a long time

    Brilliant

  • the greatest artist of our generation

  • does anyone know who's playin pedal steel on this song? :-)

  • I'm pretty sure his name is john mcfee..

  • theres another guy called elvis and he`s very good too

  • is it just me or does he look like an older nick jonas!??!? lmao!! =)

  • He is like Nick Jonas fav airtist lol!!

Listen to elvis Costello 'pump it up'

I think its his best song!

  • I know it's cliche but my favorite is oliver's army

  • he does in a scary way, lol

  • His guitar is amazing

  • superb

  • he looks like jason mraz

  • Kid at the back looks like a very young Queen Elizababeth.

  • and the one at the front, a young Robbie Fowler

  • thats just made me piss myself laughing and the fowler commemt lol

  • one of the few cultural beams of light during the reagan years...thank you elvis! goerge jones would be proud...

  • pure class

  • Brilliant song. If you're of a certain age... Not sure about the vid.. The guy with the hat...

  • FYI, the guy with the hat is John McFee, a great guitarist and pedal steel player who backed EC as part of Clover on My Aim Is True (and toured with EC and the Attractions around the time of Almost Blue). He also played on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey, and has been part of the Doobie Brothers.

  • A brilliant song off a fantastic album

ALMOST BLUE well worth a listen

  • Elvis is looking Italian!

  • That's Steve Naive on fiddle!

  • This song is so sincere. Lipstick Vogue in Nashville.

  • THE DOGS BOLLOCKS !

  • Comment removed

  • his voice has always been so relaxing to me. in a hanging out with friends, drinking and smoking whatever you want kind of way.

  • whaa the ******** this is class

    these lyrics are genius like.

was looking for presley but this costelo geezer is cool to

  • Classic ..

  • brill song love it

  • awesome song... Elvis Costello is bril

  • Damm George Jones or Elvis? I think I'll settle for both.

The fact that this is produced by Billy Sherril helps....
