The then Cardinal Ratzinger himself has said that one can receive communion despite being pro death penalty- for Catholics are permitted to use PRUDENTIAL JUDGEMENT on this matter.

Ironically most Catholics are Democrats, which makes no sense if look at the Democrat platform. Most evangelicals are Republicans. Being against contraception of all forms just shows that the Catholic Church is consistant as you pointed out. No other Christian denomination now takes this stance.
