  • Unless you were alive during world war 2 you really have no idea. I'm too young I couldn't imagine...

  • Heh he sends his wife upstairs to do the dangerous bit.

  • This why the RAF liked windy days and used grand slam bombs followed by Indenciary Bombs The idea was to blow out windows and roof tops walls etc and let the Indenciary Bomb burn up the rest of the area

  • or just pee on it

  • I gotta get me one of those...the hose, I mean

  • @Agentseaturtle there are no more of the Swiss made stirup pumps around, Ocasionally you can find them at "Mmajor Surplus ".com i bought two several years ago and they work supreme. Hudson makes a Trombone Sprayer, used to despense agricultural applications. They syphone water from a bucket and deliver 30 foot stream. great for firefighting.

  • but in the war they would have droped more than one incindiary bomb on a house

  • @Eternalgamers1 It is extremely unlikely that more than one bomb would hit a house. Bombs back then were very imprecise and would scatter across a very wide area. With incendiary bombs, they typically tried to disperse them on purpose. Additionally, the germans never deployed the huge bombing formations the western allies did.

  • Kind of puts the problems that we face today into perspective...thanks for this!

  • Excellent piece of social - and military - history!!

  • Good video capturing a piece of history.

  • what about magnisium bombs i heard that they was wery common in ww2 and if you put water on a magnisium fire it burns hotter and bigger.

  • Not much of a fire. Only the bed seems to be affected by the bomb..

In real life I think think Miss.Smith would be consumed alive by the flames If she tried to follow this commercial's advice...

Miss and Mister.Smith? Follow my advice instead:

Get the hell out of there! Leave this extremely dangerous job to the firedepartment if you want to live!!

  • @askjiir The fire department was busy already, with thousands of others. This was life and death reality.

  • @askjiir In real life in 1941 that was the way homeowners fought incendary bombs. They did not have plastic and chemically laden furnature, carpet and wall coverings. Just ordinary combustibles wood paper and cloth. Those incendary bombs carried inly a small amount of excellerant, about as much a two road flares. The training fim was correct. The fire brigade would not have been coming as they were on other calls. This way a citizen could protect their home and neighborhood. That was then.

  • Why not ask the Germans to put a bucket over it at the same time, Would have made life a lot easier.

  • Good work smith, now clean that shit up.

  • Ha ha ha ha :D

  • Fantastic. Funniest video on YouTube! I love how governments gave out some of the worst advice ever, just to make citizens feel useful.

Put out a housefire with a bicycle pump and a bucket of water, yeah sure!

And hubby sends his wife in to deal with the smoke inhalation. Really chivalrous!

I wonder how many people died trying to follow this awful advice instead of doing the smart thing and just getting away from the fire? Sad, really. But funny to watch in hindsight!

  • jea i partly agree, screw the damn pump and just use buckets of water which is readily available. should be easier to chuck water on it, but it is true that spraying water is more effective than pouring. just chuck water at it

  • Can anyone tell me if there are any good movies about the Brits dealing with WWI on the home front? I would really like to see more and think a film could be a good way to do that.

  • Did you ever see a UK TV series called Danger UXB ?

  • I have not, thanks for the tip

  • the allies fire bombed the hell out of germany once the luftwaffe was rendered ineffective. brutality leads to more brutality with less reservation. will 'smart bombs', etc., make brutality seem more clinical and thus less offensive? from recent vids we see war is still a nasty business. and it is indeed a 'business.'

  • Where can I buy this?

  • what-the incediary or the vid?

  • Brilliant. Thanks for uploading this.

  • After 1941, the Elektron bombs were sometimes adapted with an explosive charge being placed in the canister,to spray the surrounding area with hot and molten metal when it detonated in the heat. This, however, was mainly to deter fire-fighters: although the initial stage of the bomb ignition does look like a sparkler (that's the thermite ignition charge burning), after several minutes the casing itself would melt and ignite (being a magnesium alloy), and they were very effective incendiaries.

  • I think the bomb would be more effective if it held a burst charge inside to spread the incendiary. It looked like it was mostly burning like a giant sparkler on the ground.

  • "GET ME THE BUCKET!"

    "ok" (Fills bucket with gasoline)

    "ready?"

    "Sure"

    BOOOOOOOOM

  • Well done the Browns and the Smiths.

Neighbours don't even talk to each other nowadays.

  • What would have happened if both Brown's and Smith's houses got hit - guess a little neighbour argument could have rised about the pump's ownership ;-)

I'm glad to live in a time where one can sit on the sofa without fearing to get a firebomb through the roof!

  • What did anyone win in the Second World War?Luftwaffe,RAF and USAAF.Hamburg,Coventry,Dresden,London.Everyone lost.

  • who won anything? France won its freedom, as did most of Europe. the US won the reparation payments that saved the US economy and made it a superpower, the US civilians had relatively few losses and gained massively. the USSR won massive reparations that made it a superpower as well and won huge stretches of territory.

But in Europe it was a disaster. I hope the US never elects a warmonger like the Republicans again, they sell war like its the superbowl.

  • when was the last time you saw a commercial that told you "three or four families can share the costs" if this were now every family would need one

  • I've just found one of these in my back garden and it looks to be intact. Exactly the same as the one in this video. What causes it to ignite?

  • impact fuse

  • I think that it was RAF that first bombed Berlin, after that Germany began London bombartments. Besides RAF bombed much more civil targets in Germany than Luftwaffe ever in Britannia.

  • The only reason the Germans didn't bomb the brits more is because they never thought to develop a heavy bomber.

The arguement as to "who dropped more?" is retarded anyway, the Brits weren't dropping bombs on the Russians or the frogs, if there were more germans around to drop bombs on England, they would have.

  • Well thats what happens when you let your government go around invading countries and starting wars... eventually you get bombed. (9/11 anyone?)

  • Letters of complaint addressed to Mr T Blair C/o The Middle East everybody else gets a free Pass we have payed enough don,t you think ??

  • May 4th 1943. I was only 3 yrs old. Cowes was raided twice in one night. Each raid over an hour by Do 217 bombers. Our brick built shelter faced another with a narrow space between doors. An incendiary fell between the doors and Dad picked it up and threw it away. Burnt his fingers but saved many lives. Next day our neighbour ticked him off for burning her fence down. Now thats funny!! I have some of my own wartime stories on my youtube channel. See jonzflicks Great stuff bomberguy Many thanks

  • Sorry: tired old fart! 'twas May 4/5th 1942 not 1943. Regards to all

  • In a way saying that they got what they deserved, is saying that every American voter should die, since they've been in war with each presdent they got...never forget, their only human. Rurare Humanum Est.

  • Wow, although a good initiative, I wonder how many people actually didn't panic and survived cause of this 'commercial'. My pointer would've just been, "leave your house immediately!".

I understand, especially when you experienced the dreds of the war to hold a grudge against the Nazi's, nonetheless you can't ever forget that it's not because people voted for some wrong politician that they actually deserved to die aswell.

  • After WW2 many people criticized Churchill & the RAF for destroying much of Dresden & Hamburg with firebombs. When I see this, once again I say to myself - the Nazis got what they deserved.

Does anyone remember the Morrison Shelter? I remember crawling out of one at night, turning on an electric fire and setting my pyjamas trousers alight! Still have the scars on my leg 65 years later.

  • Oh dash I pressed thumbs down. It should have been thumbs up. I hope you get at least two up's to counteract. I've never made that mistake before. I agree with your comments.

  • How many of Dresden's then-inhabitants were Nazis? How many women and children and old and injured deserved being shot by gunners from the planes, to be dragged into the fire by the violent firestorm? Everyone who ordered people to be killed must be criticized - whether it was Hitler or Churchhill. No citicen of Dresden set your pyjama on fire...

  • And I agree with this guy! Yes, they had to be stopped but what Dresden experienced no Englishman can realize. Just imagine thousands of people burned alive at the same time and for what? The goal does not justify the means!

  • How do you spot a Nazi from an aircraft at 10,000 ft.? Please recall that the Nazis murdered ~6,000,000 Jews alone. The fire-bombing of German cities & Japanese cities (even worse) by the USA was appalling. The whole 6 years of war was appalling & wouldn't have happened but for a certain Mr. A.H. We could discuss it forever. Fortunately, a war of this nature cannot happen again.

  • I hope you're right, shit like that should never happen again. And I never said the Germans were saints, I just wanted to say that all participants have their shamefull acts and tragedies.

  • Oh really? Tell the paranoid power hungry Russian leaders..

If only you were right. But if something like that will break out, it will have the same scenario as before.. everyone pretending it cannot happen as long as possible, which would only help the aggressor to built up hi strength.. just like WW II.. this is something democracy is weak at.

  • Moenchengladbach was the first bombing target of your Sir W. Ch., May 12th 1940. Numerous bombing raids on German cities followed, including 8 raids on Berlin. Before Coventry and so on! The German Luftwaffe RESPONDED 4 months later on Sept.7th with an attack on London and 5 months later on Nov. 15th. on Coventry! How many bombs fell on Germany first? You need education!

This is well known historical fact!

But Coventry seems to be the innocent virgin bombing target of all wars?

  • We had a stirrup pump when I was a kid during the war. Never needed though.

    Thanks BG

  • NOW you tell me !!

  • Keep 'em coming, Bomberguy!
