  • Still the greatest runner ever...........any other great runner will tell you they wished they had Pre's fire and guts on any given day. Watch Doc's about him and there are former champions that say he was an amazing runner.....Watch "Fire on the Track" the Steve Prefontaine story

  • @runwithkyrstin2002 Shoulda, woulda, coulda.....Viren's PR was FASTER then Pre's, was it not, REGARDLESS of Pre's O T time, and Viren's Olympic winning time? Many can run a fast time- The Olympic final is full of them- but only one can put that together with the smartest race, and WIN....

  • he ran hard and he gave his best.

  • he wasn't an amazing miler. He still had a very fast time, but he wasn't a legend in the mile. He probably would have lapped those guys in the 3 mile

  • I can't believe anyone would criticize Pre because he lost a race. Does losing one race invalidate the unbelievable accomplishments of his all too short career? I don't thinks so. Pre is golden. And if you think you can do better, then by all means prove it.

  • Stand in a mans moccasins for 2 weeks. Then Jjudge him.

  • Did first run the exact same time as the miracle mile? Youd think Pre would have done better on a 200m track, being pretty short.

  • thats my friends great granpa no joke

  • Good race. Nothing else too it.

  • Can't imagine running a distance race on that tiny track.

Thinking about it more, I can't imagine running at all on that tiny, crowded track. I'd become claustrophobic.

  • "Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it" Prefontaind definently pushed the pace and forced them to respond

  • Pre was a beast don't get it mixed! He didnt win.....but he wasn't unbeaten in his career! He was respected.....and is a Legend. Imagine the sport now if he lived!

  • prefontaine was a very great runner, but i disagree with his thought that talent didn't have anything to do with how fast he ran.

  • @GetUpAndTryAgain it doesn't thats the thing. Pre wasn't only a runner he was a visionary as well. Pre knew that anyone could achieve greatness if they tried hard enough. thats what made his legacy so great.

  • May his legacy live on

  • Prefontaine is like my freaking hero now

  • Pre is fucking great

  • The only good race pace is a suicide pace, and today looks like a good way to die -Steve prefontaine

  • @oneshot6kills Its best pace, not only good, and today looks like a good day to die not way to die. come on man

  • i ran a 4:41 my softmore year and i was a 800 runner..i did not even sprint at the end of the race.

  • @dlpman8 you're still gay

  • @rud3dogg lol

  • @dlpman8 nobody cares about your highschool times

  • @sueyking colleges?

  • @dlpman8 Faggot munch. this is about him not you. fucking shitface

  • @dlpman8 i know everyone has been replying to you but what is one more. first of all its sophomore, second, that is just a dumb comment.

  • @starbrighter You think 4:04 Is Fast You Should See His Other Mile Time It Was A 3:59.2

  • Did Jordan ever have a bad game?

Did Ali ever get knocked down?

    Did Ruth ever strike out?

    Of course they did!

ALL athletes have their bad days, nobody is immune to them after all they are human.

But u can't completely judge an athletes career based on 1 days results. Thats unfair to say the least.

  • I concur, ts 150, but MOST indoor tracks are 200... so thats my mistake

  • some are 160,

i don't know why they don't have just on distance

  • they run 8 laps, 8 times 200 = one mile

    so its 200m

  • its 11 laps, on a 150m track

  • no 8x200m = 1600m. one mile =1609.344m. noob.

  • 23 sec into the video

  • running uber fast splits indoors even at a pro level is more difficult, especially since its only a 200m track

  • this track is even less than 200. i believe that it is 150

  • I agree, and to add a bit of interest: running a sub 4 minute mile was considered highly impossible before one runner did it in 1954.. now the WR is 3:43

  • since when is 4:04 considered bad? if you can run below 4:20 in the mile, you're a God.

  • You must also know that along with all of the other great achievements that he did or would've done, he also helped lead the movement for the AAU to allow American professional athletes to get the same equal rights to compete and get paid. Just as other countries would do for their professional athletes, I believe that American athletes would've been even more competitive with the world if they had been paid for their time, effort, and work at what they did best.

  • hey pre is my favorite distance runner of all time, and the favorite of many many people. But lets face the fact that the only reason he couldnt achieve both gold olimpic and world medals is because he died almost beore reaching the peak of his carreer, hes great for what he could have been. Also he managed to do very interesting things in college. hes a god

  • and he was short

  • You know whats funny in the 1973 LA times mile Pre ran faster then the winners in this, he ran a 3:59.2 they ran a 3:59.6 hes still better in my book.

  • Pre turned it OVER!!!

  • Pre was the greatest

  • A hypothetical: If Bayi and Walker had faced each other in the 1500m at the 1976 Olympics (i.e., if Tanzania had not boycotted), who would have won? I have my opinion. Whats yours?

  • For anyone who wants to know, this conversation is continued, i'm learning more, and I am certianly cenceeding certain points to your friend here. Smart guy, knows alot, just a little too enthused in proving this wrong.

Pre was a great runner, he had alot more potential, but he didn't always, win [we all SHOULD know that;seems some of us didn't]

The key is his spirit, just keep that alive. Run till u've got nothing left; thats the Pre spirit!

  • Well, i don't know who Walker and Bayi are, but they didn't become legend like he did. You learn about him, you learn more about the heart of running than about any other way you could. "Running is a work of art" he said.

Also, I'm not going to make a excuse for him losing this race. But something to think about: he's not a miler. They are. They are as much out of his leauge as he is of their, just in different races. He ran longer ones, they ran shorter. They belong to diff. leagues.

  • Well your pretty ignorant then . And did Pre ever win Olympic Gold or break World Records ? I know he's an icon and I respect him a lot, maybe if he didn't die young he could have done big things but on times alone he's significantly worse than John Walker . Walker even ran 5 seconds quicker than Pre over 3000m . Another point John Walker is DEFINATLEY a legend he just hasn't had big films and t-shirts made about him .

  • "Did Pre ever..break world records?" Uuuuhhh..YEAH!

okay, nm.I just checked. He did not set world records.I was wrong, i admit it.Sry.

However, he set MANY american records which still hold to day, and btw, the 3k was still too short a race. Have u not heard me? He-was-a-DISTANCE-runner.Generally i'd call 1.6k and 3k distance, but it hardly seems didtance at thier level. His best races were 5k and up.

And btw, his best 5k time was faster than the winners of 72 olympics. Literaly had a bad day

  • in the end, its recognized that winning in the olypics is not equivilent to being the best. Thats why there's an "olympic record" and then the "world record" is compltetely different, expect in the cases where they happen to run there best times at the olympics.

Admitadly, i only glazed over the list, but it looks like most world records are NOT made in the olympics.

Looks like that Gold is only a symbol now, huh? And one that doesn't mean what u thought, either.

  • Your a complete ignorant lunatic . I did mention that the two world class athletes who beat him in that race held World records and they held them for a considerable time . Your completley contradict yourself, Pre never broke a world record and mistake me if I am wrong but what American record does he still hold ? He didn't just have a bad day, Lasse Viren's PR of 13.16 over 5k is faster than Pre's and he was the winner of the 1972 olympics . Your a complete idiot .

  • @1MCmagma His olympic trials 5k record still stands...9 olympic 5k trials later

  • Except for the fact that the Munich 5k was the race in which bowerman and shorter, moore, and a lot others said was the best race he ever ran. the start of it was too slow, leaving the podium for the fastest kickers. you cant say he had a bad day when his last mile was a 4:04.

  • pre was a great runner no doubt. But most people call him a legend because of his confidence and mental disipline (that like no1 had like pre )and how he believed in him self. Itsnot always about the time.

  • Your the ignorant one and not realizing without Pre distant running would not be what it is today in Americs...shut the hell up and quit hating on the god of distant running in the US

  • I don't know why you guys are making excuses for him . Over a mile/1500 Pre wasn't in Walker's and Bayi's league .

  • Pre never was that great in the mile. Haha.

  • "and prefontaine last"

    even the birds know

  • he lost because this was his second race in the same day

  • i wonder why pre lost this race, anyone know where there is footage of the race he won with stitches in his foot

  • The race with his foot in disrepair was while he was at U of O, he graduated in '73, so it was before then.

  • greg luganus beat him in the next round sad

  • WTF...I watched the whole race to see PRE RUN LAST......

  • it was a mile...4 minutes long...cry me a fuckin river

  • PREFONTAINE IS GOD!!!

  • Prefontaine is one of those "what if" type of athletes like Bo Jackson. They both (Pre, Bo) were great athletes and icons in their respected sports even though none of them won their sports top prize.

  • yeah, also Bo Jackson looks like Colossus from the X-men comics, he resembles him.

  • This event wasn't Pre's best race, he was a 3miler.

He broke every American youth record in running, he was a total phenomenon. He went to the Olympics when he was 21 or 22:

  • "Pre set the U.S. record in the 5000 in the event that took him to the 1972 Olympic Games. However, Prefontaine was passed with 150 meters remaining by eventual winner Lasse Viren and silver medalist Mohammed Gammoudi. He lost a third place position to Britain's hard-charging Ian Stewart in the last 15 meters of the race, after having led nearly the entire last mile in a toe-to-toe battle with Viren." wikipedia

  • didn't they do a blood coke thing? i mean the people who won? i was reading about it lasse wiren did lots of it

  • i meant blood doping*

  • blood doping occured during the olympics, im not sure here about here though.

  • eh doesn't matter prefontaine is my hero and he didn't blood dope

  • no he didnt. my dad met pre. i live in the town he went to school. ive been to pres rock, the place he died. hes my hero as well

  • haha lucky i wish i met him before he died, and i want to go to oregon just to see coo's bay and his grave idk why im no stalker lol...

  • it such a shame that Pre would die only a few months after this race.

  • He died tragically in a car crash at the age of 24, never realizing his full potential. It's kinda sad, but he was great.

  • you missed by point - sciatica is extremely painful lol. don't forget he went undefeated in events of the mile and up for 3.5 years. many of his performances were unforgetable and the people who knew pre and loved him did not because of hollywood. many in the country may, but it's not the only reason.

  • "truth2btold" ur a fag. the race pre was in in munich was the best field of athletes ever competing together. and pre would have won if that other stuff didnt happen. u cant even cock off unless ur on the medal stands at the olympics. and i doubt that will happen.

  • you're an idiot. it's not because of Hollywood.

  • truth, you know absolutely nothing about running first of all.

secondly he Ran a 4:04 LAST mile in that race where he "didn't win the gold", and no one would have ran that unless he pushed the pace for them. He turned that race into a work of art. He didn't win, but he put out the most effort and left it all out there, and that is the essence of what Pre represents.

  • your abs correct. as in the movie "pre was troubled by knowing a medeokre effort can win a race, and a magnificent effort can lose a race"

  • @wiremanart That is correct... lol

  • what was Virens winning time in Munich? What was Pre's time in the Trials in Eugene?

Virens Gold medal time 13:26.4 Pre's U.S. Trials time 13:22.8

where's the problem here? People need to get off this "he finished 4th kick" Should have ran the same negative splits he did against young (or faster) and he would have had it....problem was they walk thru the first 2 miles...not Pre's style

  • yes, it's not his event or his season.

but keep in that at this point in 75, Pre had done no speed work whatsoever. He was battling a sinus infection, but more importantly, sciatica as well...

  • this isn't pre's event, and it was indoor. if this was a 5,000 or 10,000 meter he would've smoked them

  • Prefontaine last?

    :(

if this was a 3 mile run pre would of owned hardcore

  • This was really good considering pre was mostly a 5k person

  • Everyone loses sometimes good job Pre you did your best and thats whats cool

  • Pre was the best even though he got beat

  • how was he the best? the best american sure...but this isn't the world series...it is a world sport

  • i wish i ran that fast on my off days

  • how come those 4 guys arent bleeding???

  • w/e you cant beat pre

  • wow ...blast from the past!!!

Dixon and Walker ...and the brilliant Filbert Bahi (spelling?).

Want to see a better race?

Watch the 1974 Commonwealth games 1500m when walker tries to catch bahi.....same result as this

  • Bayi. Filbert Bayi.

  • In their 35 plus years in business,Nike has had hundreds of stars wear their shoes. They have made a statue of only one of them -Steve Prefontaine.

  • If you aint first

you might as well be last

  • if anyone else ran like Pre did in that race, they would be deemed an idiot....but with him, he is a fighter. He doesnt change his running style no matter what the competition.

  • it must have been tough running on those crappy, small tracks.

  • Indoor tracks do suck. I hated them when I was competing. I like the outdoor tracks better.

  • why did he let those guys win? there's no way he was serious in that race

  • i heard he was sick...even if he wasnt he didnt let them win...u hav no idea how hard it is to hold off some of those kickers that r some of the best in the world

  • yeah, but pre's run faster than the 3:59.6 that the winnner right there ran on that exact same track, so on a healthy day when pre dominates a race how he normally does, tehy dont outkick him and he wins

  • i kno but sinschild07 is talking like pre let them win cuz he fooling around or something and he definately wasnt he just had an off day

  • 61 seconds first lap, u dumbass announcer

  • not to mention he kept turning down offers to go pro so he could run in the olympics -- he had nothing to retire on

  • all pre fans i have made a tribute to prefontaine, come by my channel , watch it and coment in the video

  • pre was last because this wasnt his race... and the other ppl were VERY fast at this race

  • Are you seriously trying to make this idiotic comment??? That is total bullshit, Pre never thought about retiring AT 21 YEARS OLD YOU MORON! He still was in college at the time and had to run for Oregon for 2 more years! He got older, yes, 24 then he died. Most runners don't reach their prime until 30. Once again you are an idiot.

  • greatest man ever!! and i have the same birthday!!

  • 3:59 mile, goddamn thats fast.

  • walker reminds me of jason weller with his running form....if u know who jason weller is hes the pennsylvania highschool state champ in xc and in the 3200m run...

  • wow too bad pre took it out so hard, thats a pretty fast mile considering that its such a short track. all those turns and crap

  • tough for a real track runner to run laps around a stick like that.

  • pre got pwn'd

  • ok, yeah, real nice >:?(

  • dont hear prefontaine last very much

  • i would owe u a dollar

  • This country still produces a few runners of Pre's caliber, but they are often ruined by over-training in college. I wish I had a dollar for every gifted runner I ever met who got stress fractures from excessive high-speed training in college.

  • where my friend runs in college (coastal carolina div 1) all they do is distance runs and maybe speed or tempo 1 time every 2 weeks so thats not completly true but there are alot of colleges that do that and its a shame

  • i would owe you four

  • What a race! The immortals at work! Too bad that Pre never really got into a serious mile/1500 with these guys outdoors. Thanks for posting, brings back the memories for this burnout case!

  • At the start of the video they said it is an 11 lap race

  • It's a 200m track im going to guess as they ran 8 laps.

  • Pre is absolutely amazing.

What's the length of one lap on that track?

  • It's a 160 yard track. Almost non-existent anymore with metric distances being run.

  • Thxs for posting these i always wanted to see my hro in action

  • three great athletes: bayi, walker and prefontaine... but what a tremendous performance from bayi that day!

  • he went to school at Marshfield High home of the Pirates in Coos Bay, Oregon.

  • ahahaa PRE lost!!

  • any way he was not in shape and sick that day watch PREFONTAINE LA Times... his best was 3:53record 7 times sub 4.. he was not a miler and he kick their asses.. you probably allways lose in every aspect of your life... pre won everything, lose less than you can imagine

  • "there are men out there that can beat me, but they'll have to bleed to do it." Go Pre

  • pre dfl

  • he was a great runner, there were a lot of good runners though, you win some you lose some...

  • hey buddy, trust me he is the god of runners you just dont know what your talkign about, dont be a hater. he was a 5000m runner and all that not a 1500m runner and he still creamed them in the other 1500m race, these guys were the best 1500m runners in the world, and pre special isnt even 1500m.

  • That's right 1500 and 1600 were not his distances, thought he had good times at the mile but he eas compiting against, the flying kiwis wlaker and Dixon who were specialists in the mile and the 1500 mostly Walker, Dixon did 5000 alson, and Verbayi was a miler specialist, so it's like you putted Haile Gebrsselassie against Hicham El Gerrouch in a 1500 race.

I think Pre that race in short indoor track as a training.

  • What the heck?? why didnt he win??? hes like the god of all american runners!!

  • note, god of all 'american' runners. not god of all runners. he wasn't by any means the best, as you can clearly see here. a fan favourite among americans, thats all

  • ur a dumbass, pre was the best

  • pre was not a 1500 runner, much less an indoor 1500 runner

  • I have actually seen this already and I found out that the winner of this race tested positive for banned substances 2 weeks after this race the 1st and second place were tested positive.

  • Wow thanks, it's great to see videos back from when New Zealand was a force in world athletics. They were good days... Snell, Halberg, McGee, Baillie, Davies, Dixon, Tayler, Walker... not much since then but keep your eye on Nick Willis. Oh and jdogs333, what are you on about? Walker and Bayi did not test positive for anything. Don't spin crap

  • Are you retarded?

that was two flat out lies right there.

  • 72' Olympics...

  • Great video!!!

Rod Dixon, 3rd place, won New York City Marathon in 1983.

  • Yeah what are you on about jfogs333 that is total rubbish, either your full of it or your sorces are wrong.

    Go kiwis.

  • Go Pre Go!

  • Long Live Pre!
