The Huanuo (Chinese) forge puts out some hit or miss stuff. the problem is they forge swords for a bunch of different companies (just google katana, you will see wich ones) and they are not the greatest quality. What makes matters worse is the 'furniture'. The handle on that thing is made of cheap wood forced onto the nakago, wrapped with shoe-lace that passes for ito and half the time the handle is cracked and busted inside. Take one apart and you will see bamboo slivers slide out.

I don't mind ordering one ... but i'm not from the States and I could get into alot of trouble ... but other than that I'm desparately trying to get one of those katanas
It is true that most modern day Katana are not even made in Japan anymore although there are still active forges in Japan. Just need to know where to look. Some even have websites and will create a customs sword at your request for a price. 400 USD minimum. And typically take no less than a month to make it for you. Any real Katana will take AT LEAST a month to make by hand and is yes it will most likely have the craftsmans mark on it somewhere.
Thanks for the input! I don't see any link, though. Anyway, where did you get your sword?
How do you feel about modern swords? I have a hanwei practical plus elite, a cheness kaze and a ryumon dragon and they all cut exceptionally well. What do you think about these kinds of swords?
A lot of ignorant comments here. Most modern japanese swords are made in China. This is nothing new. Hanwei, Cheness and Ryumon swords are all made in Chinese forges.
This sword has nice fittings and the steel has a visible hada, which means it is actually folded. The hamon looks fake, which means the steel was not differentially hardened, rather through hardened.
Most likely this sword is an excellent sword for tameshigiri, but it is impossible to be sure without actually using it.
I have been practising Kendo for years and have a passion for katanas. I can tell you this one is not a good one. Like many of the new "handmade" katanas you find on the market, you can see the carbon mixed with the iron is only located on one part of the sword, which makes it less resistant. Besides, all the great handmade katanas in Japan wear the signature of their creator on it, just like mine.
So I guess you are right about the origin of this one :D .
I'm not sure I agree with you. I don't think it's possible to see where the carbon is in the steel. If you can point me to some resources that would explain that, that would be great. I've always understood that the carbon is in the ore to begin with. Can you point me to a source which contradicts this?
Where did you get your sword? I can't find an actual Japanese made sword, period. They're all Chinese, American or European unless they're the heirloom type.
The carbon should be mostly on the surface of it to provide flexibility without losing its strengh. I am sorry I am french, I know a lot about japanese swords, but I don't have any english source. This is a link to a National Geographic reportage about handmade japanese swords. It is in french, but you can mute it and still understand a lot. Please focuse your attention on the steel you will see the difference.
no your wrong Kendo is a Japanese style of fencing and it doesn't specialize on proper use of katana instead it just show basic Katana use. Also, Kendo has only one style.
There is an art that specialize on Katana use. I forgot the exact name of it but it's here in Youtube. search it
It takes alot of practice, commitment and self discipline,Kendo is just a style, someone had to invent it.If you practice and do your own thing ,you may come up with your own style and have people seaking you out as a teacher in the years to come, good luck.

I didn't list wakizashi, tanto, tachi, daito, odachi, etc. simply because there's tons of them.
You don't know what you're talking about, Japanese swords aren't made of "two different types of metal" they're made of steel (iron and carbon) with anywhere from %0.25 to %1.20 carbon, the hamon is made by selectively hardening, but it's still steel.
these sword take at least a year to make the in the beginning when it said to sword was folded they actually to do that the have to fold it at least 100 times!! just to get that ultimate sharpness at least enough to cut a person in half..i want a real version of a samurai sword i just got a backward blade very cool though (its backside is the front side of blade) my swords blood red
No the new law is aimed at imitation /movie /fantasy swords as gangs are useing them to fight. genuine collectors and martial artists are exempt as far as i know. i own a £230 Rymon hand forged sword made from AISI 1060 High carbon steel, 58HRC on the edge and 45HRC on the spine, full signed tang and certificate of authenticity. ray skin and Japanese cotton on the handle with 2 steel handle ornaments. sharp. piano black saya, made in lonquan. this sword looks crap, fake hamon and copper fittings.
and allot of swords are made in the lonquan forge in china as they have good steel. some names to look for in sword makers are as follows : Paul Chen, Han Wei and Rymon. all from the lonquan forge in china. paul chen is the most know of the 3 but there all based in the same town (lonquan)search for them in wikipedia it has all sorts of info on the forge its quite interesting! and most importantly research before you consider buying any sword! and remember they are NOT toys or for immature kids!
haha, if you thought that sword looks like crap, then you should see the shit Tanto i bought for 15$ that has a blunt edge. it sucks. but man, i really want to buy a real, traditionally froged and everything. i guess your katana is really sweet.
I have a samurai sword over 500 years old and it is incredibly sharp.Never in the 35 years I have owned it has any one sharpened it.My Japanese doctor said the writing under the handle is to old for him to read and he is from Japan.Mine was a world war two souvenir brought back by some soldier.
yo, did he say it was written in kanji? if so you can look for a dictionary... being over five hundred years old it probably has names of testers on it... as in prisoners that had their lims cut off to test its sharpness...
If they only fold the carbon-steel twice, as I suspect, it must contain a high level of carbon (> 0.7%) so this sword blade must be very soft metal. Not meant for fighting/cutting.Unless, of course the % of carbon is controlled by chemically instead of the real japanese soulsmithing traditional way:the process of folding tamahagane 10 to 15 times (wich results in loss of up to 50% of the initial carbon-steel tamahagane mass). Thus, I would'nt call it a japanese samourai sword.
I would hate to be run through with that on a cold Japanese winter morning after having defied the shogunate by making forbidden pottery art objects and having just been reunited with the son I never new I had.
Actually, some of the swords that existed in feudal times were of HUGE length, sometimes up to 11 feet in length, known as O-dachi, these blades were massive, and their purpose was mainly unknown, blades of such length are very hard to use and therefore would be more or less useless on the battlefield (dont believe me, go try using an 337cm sword (total length).)
Miyamoto Mushashi(Japanese Sword Saint) and Bokuden Tsukahara(Japanese Undefeated Swordsmen Of All Time),umm sori for not informing u all,Musashi lose one time b4.Those two swordsmen once said b4 a good katana blade can be judged by its artistic making, and which metal is from to make the blade and its famous user and history background(story which is about this katana) and a good name and quality and its balance and harmony to achieve a greater standard when fighting with enemies.
False! There are still Japanese sword smiths who's family have been forging for over 800 years. Japan no longer makes Sharp Swords but the are of the same quality. these newer swords go for about 16-30,000 dollars they have all the potential of being sharpened.
doesnt make sharp swords? are you crazy? You can buy swords from Japan all the time. There are over 250 active smiths licensed with the Japanese Swordsmith Association, the top 10 or 12 are known as Mukansa Level smiths who are considered to be the best smiths working at the time. They're only exceeded by the Ningen Kokuho, Living Legends, of which there are two, currently. All swords that leave Japan have to be registed with the Japanese Cultural Affairs Bureau.
case in point, Mukansa Level Smith, Yoshihara Yoshindo, who played a cameo in "The Last Samurai" as the village smith. While on set, he actually forged the sword that is given to Tom Cruise at the end of the movie.
Samurai sword only applies to a katana if it is owned by samurai. Wakizashi, the smaller second sword, was traditionally owned and worn ONLY by the samurai. Lots of Japanese warriors that weren't samurai had katana.
it depended on the time period. Throughtout history there were many bans placed on the carrying of weapons. It wasnt always certain who carried what length sword, what WAS known was the carrying of the Daisho was generally accepted as something ONLY the samurai wore. But this changed throughout time. During the Bakumatsu for instance, many people carried swords. As the Shogunate began to break apart after Perry's visit to Japan. Its peace keeping methods along the byways began to break down.
Well, the Nihontou, as its proper name is, was carried by many people and warriors throughout history. Samurai means "one who serves" strictly speaking is a description of their post. During Hideyoshi's time, he banned the peasentry from owning weapons in fear one would rise up and take the country from him. Later, in 1876 the Haitorei Edict was imposed which banned the wearing of swords altogether. So, while for the most part, wearing two swords meant you were bushi, it didnt ALWAYS mean that.
Nihonto (as far as I know there is no long 'O') is collectively any sword made in Japan. Nihon = Japan; To = sword. (maybe usage is for only traditional swords these days?) Wakizashi reference was regarding the daisho pairing.
My post could reflect this thought: Most people posting on here seem to think that in ancient Japan there were only samurai and ninja. 'Japanese' doesn't always equate to 'samurai' or 'ninja' people!
ni nen mae watashi wa nihonjin wo aimashita. kendoka deshita. Didn't understand when I asked her about 'bokken'. I explained it as wooden practice sword and she responded with "Ah, bokuto."
Well, typically, modern swords are refered to as "Shinken" or live swords, Generally historical swords fall under the period when they were made, Koto, Showato, Gendaito, etc.
But yeah, there were many different types of people, from the Ainu in Hokkaido, to the Court Nobles. Samurai were of noble birth, in fact you had to be born a samurai, you couldnt just become one, although you COULD be adopted into a Buke. There were many different life styles in Japan, Ronin, Watari Kachi, farmers etc.
Tō (刀) takes a long ō... - Bokken (木剣):wood saber - Bokutō (木刀):wood sword/saber. - Suburitō (素振り刀):a long heavy blade bokken - Shinai (竹刀):a bamboo sword - Iaitō (居合い刀):practice sword;unsharpened - Shinken (真剣):a real (sharpened) sabrer. - Katana (刀)/Nihontō (日本刀):katana/japanese sword - Wakizashi (脇差):short katana - Tantō (短刀):knife like katana - Daishō (大小):a set of 2 assorted swords : a long sword:daitō (大刀), and a short sword:shōtō (小刀). Usually, a katana (刀) and a wakizashi (脇差)
there is a pbs episode of NOVA, the science program, titled "Secrets of the Samurai Sword" and if anybody wants a basic education on this, it is provided. if anybody knows where there is a podcast, etc. of this show, please post it here, as hard to find it on the pbs network currently.
It is real actually. It is just a counter polishing method and the angle of the camera. I know it looks that way, but it really isn't. It just has to be polished a little more is all.
This one's not a katana, it's a Wushi Wu. The Wushi Wu is a secret term known only to the loyal legions of Lymar Provence in the south eastern region. My grandfather crafted this Wushi Wu in our basement. It could cut through any katana.
you fool a fake katana is disgracefull!!!!!!!! it is the art in which they make the sword and commponents that make a real katana shark strong and beautiful, hand made in the traditional japanese way!!!!!

You don't know what you're talking about, Japanese swords aren't made of "two different types of metal" they're made of steel (iron and carbon) with anywhere from %0.25 to %1.20 carbon, the hamon is made by selectively hardening, but it's still steel.
kisetsushin 3 years ago
Also, the sword in the video isn't of Japanese origin.

No the new law is aimed at imitation /movie /fantasy swords as gangs are useing them to fight. genuine collectors and martial artists are exempt as far as i know. i own a £230 Rymon hand forged sword made from AISI 1060 High carbon steel, 58HRC on the edge and 45HRC on the spine, full signed tang and certificate of authenticity. ray skin and Japanese cotton on the handle with 2 steel handle ornaments. sharp. piano black saya, made in lonquan. this sword looks crap, fake hamon and copper fittings.
samuraistorm89 3 years ago
and allot of swords are made in the lonquan forge in china as they have good steel. some names to look for in sword makers are as follows : Paul Chen, Han Wei and Rymon. all from the lonquan forge in china. paul chen is the most know of the 3 but there all based in the same town (lonquan)search for them in wikipedia it has all sorts of info on the forge its quite interesting! and most importantly research before you consider buying any sword! and remember they are NOT toys or for immature kids!

I have a samurai sword over 500 years old and it is incredibly sharp.Never in the 35 years I have owned it has any one sharpened it.My Japanese doctor said the writing under the handle is to old for him to read and he is from Japan.Mine was a world war two souvenir brought back by some soldier.
frnesbit 3 years ago
yo, did he say it was written in kanji? if so you can look for a dictionary... being over five hundred years old it probably has names of testers on it... as in prisoners that had their lims cut off to test its sharpness...

Well, It seem here are many comments talked on the weight of KATANA. Ordinal sized Katana weighs in general,900g - 1100g.
these weight is incidentally, quite similar to that of the baseball-bat.
The longest/largest Katana used in 11th. century I've ever seen in the museum weigh 1800g which seem very hard to handle by a hand.
nuda0205 4 years ago
Actually, some of the swords that existed in feudal times were of HUGE length, sometimes up to 11 feet in length, known as O-dachi, these blades were massive, and their purpose was mainly unknown, blades of such length are very hard to use and therefore would be more or less useless on the battlefield (dont believe me, go try using an 337cm sword (total length).)

Miyamoto Mushashi(Japanese Sword Saint) and Bokuden Tsukahara(Japanese Undefeated Swordsmen Of All Time),umm sori for not informing u all,Musashi lose one time b4.Those two swordsmen once said b4 a good katana blade can be judged by its artistic making, and which metal is from to make the blade and its famous user and history background(story which is about this katana) and a good name and quality and its balance and harmony to achieve a greater standard when fighting with enemies.

the art is lost, blacksmith's cannot make the same Samuria sword as there ancestors made.
xxxreapercrossxxx 4 years ago
False! There are still Japanese sword smiths who's family have been forging for over 800 years. Japan no longer makes Sharp Swords but the are of the same quality. these newer swords go for about 16-30,000 dollars they have all the potential of being sharpened.
Jenni81 3 years ago
doesnt make sharp swords? are you crazy? You can buy swords from Japan all the time. There are over 250 active smiths licensed with the Japanese Swordsmith Association, the top 10 or 12 are known as Mukansa Level smiths who are considered to be the best smiths working at the time. They're only exceeded by the Ningen Kokuho, Living Legends, of which there are two, currently. All swords that leave Japan have to be registed with the Japanese Cultural Affairs Bureau.
TakadaGenbe 3 years ago
case in point, Mukansa Level Smith, Yoshihara Yoshindo, who played a cameo in "The Last Samurai" as the village smith. While on set, he actually forged the sword that is given to Tom Cruise at the end of the movie.

Samurai sword only applies to a katana if it is owned by samurai. Wakizashi, the smaller second sword, was traditionally owned and worn ONLY by the samurai. Lots of Japanese warriors that weren't samurai had katana.
dimman77 4 years ago
it depended on the time period.
TakadaGenbe 3 years ago
Well, the Nihontou, as its proper name is, was carried by many people and warriors throughout history. Samurai means "one who serves" strictly speaking is a description of their post. During Hideyoshi's time, he banned the peasentry from owning weapons in fear one would rise up and take the country from him. Later, in 1876 the Haitorei Edict was imposed which banned the wearing of swords altogether. So, while for the most part, wearing two swords meant you were bushi, it didnt ALWAYS mean that.
TakadaGenbe 3 years ago
Nihonto (as far as I know there is no long 'O') is collectively any sword made in Japan. Nihon = Japan; To = sword. (maybe usage is for only traditional swords these days?) Wakizashi reference was regarding the daisho pairing.
My post could reflect this thought: Most people posting on here seem to think that in ancient Japan there were only samurai and ninja. 'Japanese' doesn't always equate to 'samurai' or 'ninja' people!
dimman77 3 years ago
And on a wooden sword side note, it's not 'bokken', it's bokuto.
dimman77 3 years ago
well, it can be refered to as both, strictly speaking, Bokuto, means "Wood Sword" as the Kanji used speak for themselves.
TakadaGenbe 3 years ago
ni nen mae watashi wa nihonjin wo aimashita. kendoka deshita. Didn't understand when I asked her about 'bokken'. I explained it as wooden practice sword and she responded with "Ah, bokuto."
dimman77 3 years ago
well they both mean essentially the same thing so, either one is appropriate, although the more common term IS bokken.
TakadaGenbe 3 years ago
Well, typically, modern swords are refered to as "Shinken" or live swords, Generally historical swords fall under the period when they were made, Koto, Showato, Gendaito, etc.
But yeah, there were many different types of people, from the Ainu in Hokkaido, to the Court Nobles. Samurai were of noble birth, in fact you had to be born a samurai, you couldnt just become one, although you COULD be adopted into a Buke. There were many different life styles in Japan, Ronin, Watari Kachi, farmers etc.

This one's not a katana, it's a Wushi Wu. The Wushi Wu is a secret term known only to the loyal legions of Lymar Provence in the south eastern region. My grandfather crafted this Wushi Wu in our basement. It could cut through any katana.
