For those who wonder, Kevin Alejandro is an american-born from a latin family in the USA. Also, the reason for his demise in the show is because he was already tapped in for "True Blood", since the producers of Southland didn't knew the faith of the show (If it was either going to be cancelled or renew). Tom Everett Scott, Michael McGrady and Arija Bareikis also left the show because the budget had to be cut, therefore it was reduced to only 4 cast members.
I've only just started watching SouthLand and I watched the start of season 3 last night and Nate was starting to be one of my favourite characters but now i came across this. Seriously I have a bad taste of favourite characters because they always end up dead. : I
You know- this still pisses me off. I don't want to accept it. :( They did the scene very well and it was extremely well written and acted; just completely superb! But it still pisses me off. I wish they would've written him out another way and left it open- especially now that he isn't on True Blood anymore (at least that's what I heard).
Random question. What specifically is Kevin Alejandro's background? I know he is Latino, but is he Mexican, Cuban, Guatemalan, etc? Is he mixed with other races? Just curious, again
Sammy didn't escalate this further so he had a chance of getting Nate to a hospital - if, as some sofa-surfing, chicken-hawks here suggest, he started shooting do you think he or Nate would have survived for backup to arrive?
His responsibility was to his partner not proving how big his balls are by killing those fuckers...justifiable as it would have been. He did the only smart thing left to do.
THIS IS THE GREATEST SCENE I THINK EVER ON TELEVISION! THIS SHOW ALWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH, CRY, SMILE, SHOUT..lol...love it!!! I cried so much for this..i knew it was coming, but the acting and everything else made it so real..EVERY PERSON ON THIS SHOW NEEDS TO BE NOMINATED FOR EMMYS AND GOLDEN GLOBES...
The single most powerful scene I've witnessed on television ever. It took a two hour walk out in the woods to bring me back to a state resembling a good mood.
@80w40 I agree, I remember the shock when I first watched it. The way it was filmed was so realistic, especially the crowd scenes and the sound effects...raw, amazing TV. Good to see that they finally got the killer in the next series. Best thing since The Shield for gritty, realistic cop shows.
If you are an average Joe, then yes. As a cop, you need to show the criminals you are in control. If you step down, then next time it might be a bullet, not a bottle.
Likely, some of these guys were armed. If they had called Code 3/RED and stepped out weapons drawn, in a couple minutes, every cop in a 5 mi radius would have been there, and the situation would have deescalated.
This is primitive stuff. When the ape thumps his chest, you thump louder, not whimper away.
Trust me, a cop would shit his pants. If you aren't shitting yourself, then there would be something wrong with you. The way people act on TV isn't the way things go down in real life.
@anishannayya1 You just proved my point exactly. Your post came across as "This is exactly what I would have done, I would have been completely level headed and would be able to do this with absolutely no problem" Which just made me laugh.
@SpartanicalSystem You ever heard the saying: i fight the way I train? what gentleman's original comment constituted was a sort of visualization, caused by the fear of pain. I didn't see anything anywhere that said anything about being level headed. That was a conclusion you drew based off of his proposed tactical response. Have we learned anything? I have certainly reviewed good tactics proposed. Why be part of the problem SpartanicalSystem?
Gangbangers not only don't like cops, they hate police officers. There motto is "The only good cop is a dead cop." So any officer in Sammy's situation should dispense with warning shots and kill everybody that lays a finger on his dying partner. All head shots too because I don't want any doubt. Cops know street justice too. Cop in that situation waste 15-20 bangers they'll definitely get the message: Don't fuck with the police.
I was speechless after this. I had never seen a scene on a TV show that was so powerful in my life. I think Southland does a great job to show the human side of the people behind the badge, and all the risks and dangers they face on a daily basis. Can't wait till it comes back! Sammy is back out on the streets!
@APR1125 The actual saying is "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6." And no cop would even risk a jury trial. Judges are notorious for how much they love police officers. Trial by judge. A lot of people don't know that. Jury trial is not mandatory. You can choose to be tried by a judge as an alternative.
Sammy would have been very justified to shoot to kill everyone of those savages after they shot his partner. Fuck a warning shot. Shoot to kill or shoot to crack their kneecaps. Empty your 9 Sammy reload and keep executing bangers. They're sociopaths anyway. They killed your partner with no provocation. Sammy's gun should still be smoking from all the gang members he killed. At least 10, 15, 20 should have been executed for touching Sammy's partner.
Sammy fuck the shots in the air. Officer Down, officer down. Anybody you shoot is in defense of another. That's justifiable homicide. You should have pulled out your other home run piece and shot every one of those savages. 15 shots in a clip. Empty the clip. Reload and kill 15 more savages. Fuck that shooting in the air shit. Why waste a good bullet. Put one in these criminals. All these gangbanging animals do is make it bad for us lawabiding citizens.
@Uberslug Your point being what? As soon as they shot Sammy's partner and started hitting Sammy, Sammy was well within his rights to squeeze off that 9 mm until he started killing as many savages as possible. Then reload and kill some. All justifiable homicides. That's all those gangbangers understand is the bullet. Sammy kills enough of them and they would have got the message. Fuck shooting in the air. In defense of another, shoot to kill.
@TheLuscious I thought I made my point pretty clear. Sammy isn't a psychopath, he's not looking for "justification" to kill 15 people. He wants to get his friend out of there safe.
@Uberslug I thought I made my point crystal clear. Sammy your partner is on the ground bleeding to death and dying being kicked by savages. Fuck a shot in the air. Dead red right in the heart. After he kill about five of those animals, they would have back up then. Two shots in the air were wasted. Self defense also applies to defense of another in this case his partner. Sammy they killed your partner so at least 14 of them should have been in body bags. Only thing bangers understand.
He should have emptied his weapon into the crowd, and would have been completely legally and morally justified in doing so. It's called a disparity of force.
I know I would have, and no "warning shots" either.
The ending of this episode was so unexpected and heartbreaking. Just as someone who lives in LA and sees how gang life affects people, this is realistic and sad. I think that people tend to not appreciate how dangerous being a police officer/detective is, especially in this city. It shows that even if gang members seem friendly, they won't hesitate to kill you. Some people have no mercy, and there are a lot of people like that in Los Angeles.
In my opinion, he could have used lethal force. Of the 3 things you need, looks like you've got 2. Intent to cause grave bodily harm/death (kicking the officer while he is defenseless). Opportunity (they are kicking the dining officer afterall so.they def have oppurtunity). Could likely even throw the third one in there, capability. I likely in a real situation like that woulda shot anyone continuously kicking him or grab at me.
I remember watching this a few months ago. Left a sick feeling in my stomach, especially since Sammy and Nate were great cops. Unfortunately, in real life, it seems most of the time that it is the police who are giving out the beatings.
This series has been a terrific showcase for many of it's regular cast members. In particular Michael Cudlitz (Cooper) Shawn Hatosy (Sammy) and Regina King (Lydia) have done some incredible work and hopefully the Emmy committee will acknowledge this.
This episode and it's shocking conclusion highlights just how dangerous life on the streets is for a police officer. The end scene with Sammy holding Nate's wife in his arms as the two collapse in grief over their loss is heartbreakingly real......
I actually gasped out loud when they hit him and got a lil sick to my stomach! I watched it at midnight and had trouble going to sleep. I cried and cried, Shawn and Kevin did a great job, and so did the directers. Even Michael Cudlitz said he yelled "Oh shit" outloud and he knew what was coming!
@APR1125 If this was a real life situation then the officer can shoot to kill instead of the air..he is out numbered by a massive amount with an officer down so he would not have gotten in trouble...i love this show because it seems soooo real.
@Bren29 And how do you know what you're talking about? You must be living in one of those fantasy lands if you actually think police would never kill, just shoot to stop. Sorry to burst your bubble, but there really isn't a difference, getting shot is getting shot, whatever your "intentions" are. As for this scene, police can't shoot un-armed people, but if that person attacks, then it's justified taking a shot, especially when your partner is being killed right in front of your eyes.
@TheZooDork 1) to get the attention of the chopper 2) its against policy to just open fire, shooting the guy going for the gun was justified, but not if he opened fire on all of them.
i get what ur saying tho lol id of liked to shoot at em too
@knights4379 well, wouldnt it be a justifiable shooting, they are assaulting your partner, kicking, punching, attempting to grab his leg and drag him away, who is unconscious on the ground, going for his gun, and if he doesnt do anything, they would have killed both of them...which was made evident by them attempting to go for his gun....if this was me in that situation, all you'd have is empty cartridges and a heap of dead bodies
I love this show, my favorite on TV right now...... both of them made a mistake and turned their backs on those guys, you can see the guy in the background at 1:08 with the pipe. They should've never let anyone of them get that close, that's why even if you established a rapport with the gang members you shouldn't trust them.
@goraidersndodgers who cares, the writers always make it so you are against the homies and that is just how this show makes me feel. screw the homies.
WOW i could seriously not believe how emotional and completely unexpected that whole bit was and the fact that he's really dead, southland is one of the greatest shows ever conceived, its just a shame it doesn't get good ratings
Those bangers are neanderthal pondscum! It still feels like "what just happened". Good job to the actors. I wish they could bring Nate back. It's good Marietta had Sammy.
Reason why I want to become an officer. I want to put these pathetic scum off the streets and into a grave. What he should have done was start shooting them in the legs. Makes me pissed!!!
I am really glad you and the other people here feel that way. This whole gang/drug thing is getting out of control. They are not just "getting high", they are killing and hurting innocent people trying to make a living. This issue goes way beyond drugs.
Where are cops like Herc and Kima from The Wire? Herc sure loves bustin heads lol.

Here's what I would have done:
1. Called for backup before stepping out of the cruiser.
2. Stepped out weapon at my right side.
3. Would have never signaled Code 4 to the chopper.
4. Would have started emptying my Glock 17. Double tap to the chest: anything that comes close.
5. Would have grabbed for my backup, a Glock 19, if needed (faster than reload/jam).
6. Would have began using the 17 reloads in the 19, in still needed.
This isn't about killing people, it's about survival at that point.

@MrJonathansmom
I am really glad you and the other people here feel that way. This whole gang/drug thing is getting out of control. They are not just "getting high", they are killing and hurting innocent people trying to make a living. This issue goes way beyond drugs.

@frogman360 getting out of control? It's the same as it's ever been.

@MrJonathansmom you won't last long in the PD with that attitude. It's a TV Show.
