hendrix??? there's no comparison...hendrix had his moment...Uli is much better ... and now Jabs has done his job too :) good guitar players in SCORPIONS isn't it ??? ;)
@1980HardRock actually there are many i think...what 'bout evening wind ? and if we check carefully, eye II eye, skywriter, mind like a tree, your last song, she said or what u give u get back are so underrated man
Guitar: Single coil pickup (probably Fender Strat) Guitar
Amp: is a late 60's model Marshall TUBE head, Likely a 2204 with a 4x12 cab)
Effect is a "chorus" added during mixing via tape delay and modulation. It may have been a dedicated chorus unit but they were VERY rare for studio use in 1970's due to excessive noise.
The entire "Taken By Force" album has a different feel to it than any other Scorpions album. I imagine it was written primarily for the Japanese market, because it was definitely NOT pushed here in the States. This album was so hard to find in the '80s, plus there are references & nods to Japan dropped all over it. Seriously, I got my hands on a Metronome Records copy of Lonesome Crow on tape about 3-4 years before I could ever find this album. Of course, all that was before the internets... \m/
Amazing song, and quite the hard one to play! I've always been in love with the rhythm. It's just amazing what Uli can do without even seeming to try. :)
In some comments on a "The Sails of Charon" video someone said a friend of their referred to Uli Jon Roth as a white Hendrix. Not knowing much of the Scorpions Roth era catalog I initially thought "Huh? What are you talking about?". After listening to this I can see the comparison.
Not only was Hendrix a major influence on Roth's playing, but Roth went on to date Hendrix' ex-girlfriend Monika Dannemann. I think I read that he was a little shy or intimidated to approach her but of course they eventually hit it off and the rest is history. I'm sure she gave him even more insight to the man Hendrix.
@proggerjohn You're right, Roth dated her. Dannemann also wrote the lyrics of "we' ll burn the sky" a song also from Taken By Force dedicated to Jimmy Hendrix. One of my favorites!
@wlmason73 I may say there are two clear styles on Uli...one is the neoclassical player that have influenced heavily over todays metal (even when Blackmore and Malmsteen use to get more credit) and in the other hand there is the psychodelic blues guy, heavily influenced by Hendrix music and image.
Even in today concerts you can clearly see how he alternates between this different shapes.
I like the intro rhythm so much :D

Does anyone happen to know what guitar/amp/effects Mr Roth used in this tune? That tone...I'd sign my soul away for it.

Hendrix was a major influence on Uli but he developed a different wat of playing after he left Scorpions!

Both points are abundantly clear to me now.
