This tank was originally intended to clear a path through barbed wire defences by dragging the wire out of the way thus it was purely an assault troop support vehicle. Tanks taking on the enemy alone would come in the second world war. The germans learnt to concentrate machine fire on one spot of the hull until the metal got hot and softened thus allowing bullets to penetrate.
The one thing to keep uppermost in mind, where WWI tanks are concerned, is that they ended trench warfare. It's an important military event, like the cannon bringing the era of castles to an end, the longbow ending the use of armour, and so on.
@hannigan06 No, at 4 miles per hour the men walking behind the tank can keep up. Remember, this tank if for WW1 battlefields in Europe with thick mud and entrenched positions. I am surprosed they did not have a bow like shield on the front of these tanks (deflection of incoming rounds) so they could just line up and drive in a straight line towards the enemy.
Thinking of the state of technology, this is an amazing machine. Remember, they were still using horses to fight the battles. What would the cost have been compaired to other armaments?
I don't have any figures in terms of 'pound notes' per weapon. Would the cost include the research and development? If so, then existing weapons have the advantage; cavalry is already developed, and the SMLE, the 18 pounder, etc.
But if cost is measured in lives saved, then the tank is a winner! Assaulting a machine gun emplacement without a tank was very costly.
Of course you are right about trying to determine the "real" cost. But we hear these days that when a jet crashes, it "cost 16 million dollars". Then, in our head we figure that is 80 times an average house. That is sort of what I was wondering.
sweet. music or sound would be nice, but 5 stars all the way for the quality and rarity. Im sure that after being faced with a mark 2, the germans got pretty cocky, and the mark IV's shreded them later on.
What is a male and a female tank? Do they make kids together moreover?

Good question! And difficult to answer!
