A lot of this vid reminds me of mid/late 1970 and suedeheads. where we all started to grow our hair longer and wear crombies. Still a good vid though.
Skinhead was just a word given by the media. They were just a bunch of inner city, short hair, aggro loving kids that lessened to black music. Today their called wiggers or chaves.
Skinheads; Never in the history of mankind has so much bollocks been expressed by so many people about a relatively small group of youths - on both sides of the political divide. Unless you were there, at the time, in London, in the 60s, your opinion about "Skinhead culture" amounts to a hill of bean. Complete fucking zilch in other words!
Skinheads were definitely working class and not really political - reggae music was a huge part of it but so was 'paki-bashing' - the music was fabulous but let's be honest it wasn't a movement strong on intellectualism.
as humans we're all fucked. we hate one another, we over react to each other, we all claim this or that as our own. mod rocker skin punk who gives a shit. we all grow old together. lets raise our lil rocker mod punk skin kids right and mabe they will live glory days better than we did.
1969 was the year the Skinhead trend hit Bolton, Lancs. No way were we racist, it was just that the Asians along with hippies, greasers etc were all in the firing line for aggro. The football terrace only lent itself as a platform to meet/challenge opposing fans. The look was clean, crisp and really smart. I stil hanker after the look and my love of reggae is still as strong as ever.
Those haircuts didn't look skinhead, they were quite long. However, I do prefer the early '70s skinheads who were into the Ska and reggae music to the later version which were taken over by Facism, that wasn't the original idea of Skinheads.
I left London in the early 60s but was the skinhead movement anti black or what?I did remember that wonderful bloke Desmond Dekker.Think ska music was the precuser to reggae.Any info would be welcome.
@jontibloom No mate, it sounds like Trev but I'm sure it's the white bloke who narrated on an earlier Pathe news production called This is Ska! filmed in Jamaica. F**cked if I know his name though.
The skinhead was all about the music and clothes and there was no race prejudice. It was not until the football fans took on the image that it turned into a fascist white power image!. I was a skinhead and hate the way something so good was ruined... so good because it did not care about race creed class.
skinhead started in football grounds, London dockers who shaved their heads rolled up their trousers to stop rats running up them would go to the match straight after work on saturdays the kids started to copy them.
@seanpdaly I was a skinhead too, and there was racism...we hated third world migrants, especially asians flooding into the UK and changing the indigenous working class communities. Nazism was never part of the early skinhead scene, but racial pride in being English was a big part of it. The boots represented pride in our working class roots, and the classy jackets and trousers and brogues, etc, represented traditional English male style. It was all about pride, not being a self-hating lefty.
@seanpdaly Fuck all to do with football. Near;y every top firm throughout the years had top table lads who were black and a couple of clubs had some Asians. The political groups from both wngs just saw potential in youth to exploit and recruited often at the football due to the mass of workig class kids at these venues.
its from a film by horace ove called simply "reggae" it was from the reggae festival at the empire pool wembley in 1970..its a brill film about an hour long...difficult to get a good copy

Pues tio te digo, eso como era el movimento donde nacio en mi país hace años, y sí que había skins así, la chica que baila de puta madre es una skin. Black and White Unite, UK for ever!
In this vid there are people of every colour enjoying the music and dancing together... my friend refuses to come to any of the ska gigs I go to, because she was chased around Hatfield Town Centre in the mid to late 70s by a bunch of skinheads!!! She is scared shitless... but I have tried to explain it isnt about that ... never was... but she wont have it...
Nah, that's deffo not Dick Hebdige mate. Just a guess, but I reckon it might be Stuart Hall. This captures - like nothing else I've seen - that transitionary moment when mod culture slipped into a suedehead/skinhead groove. Amazing how modish most of that lot look - even in 69/70 when the middle class ippies were all long hair n dope man. Where the fck did this footage come from? It's dynamite!
jack jack jack ska comes from reggae and blues old stuff but never mind you get in to it you will love it im 46 on mon and still love it good look mate
