  • I do not like Gnome 3, I do not like Unity, the possibilities for themes and configuration is bad

  • @ei4marie Neither do I, and switched to KDE 4.8. I used Kubuntu as a base and worked from there. Took Razor as a secondary desktop in case of. Can advice you to try it, if you have enough power available (2 Ghz en 2 Gig RAM or better)! See my KDE vids on it.

  • Could you have possibly chosen a more annoying "song"?

  • yup pretty much Mint 13.... blah not gonna switch or even try debian for awhile.. if u people want a good debian system stay away from ubuntu distro and focus on debian standalone or knoppix lol if they still have that hmm.. cheers

  • @ipodpunker Linux Mint DEbian (LMDE) is an option, but much depends on your box. Knoppix is for some a good option. Ever considered Linux Mint 12 + KDE full? Then you have the best of 'both worlds', provided you run a quad-core...

  • @johnvkampon, ya I gave up on the shell and ran back to Ubuntu 10.04 lts. I had to rebuild the drivers for the wifi and audio cards but gnome 2.x.x is just better for my own purposes honestly. Not saying gnome 3 is bad by any stance just doesn't do what I need it to. Music is kicking though!

  • @577416ian Alternatively you could (re-)install Linux Mint 12 from the Live-CD and preferrably in 32 bit), then update your graphics driver (if necessary, i.e. ATI or NVidia) and then next make the long distro-update. When done install KDE-full from the Mint Software Manager... You'll be surprised, but also from the new Cinnamon session!

  • Loving the softcore porn music :)

  • @577416ian ;)

  • I so want that wallpaper!

  • Take a look at the latest Cinnamon session. And reinstall your Live CD Linux Mint 12 and update it, next install KDE-full from the Mint Software Manager. You'll be surprised about the progress in MInt.

  • Sweet user interface :)

  • I'm currently using Ubuntu, but if this is what we'll see on Linux Mint 13 I'm ready to switch to it!

  • @cmariucci You can install and try cinnamon on ubuntu easily. Works pretty well.

  • @Dragn0d Yes, I have seen now on the cinnamon website that there are different instructions for install it in other distro's... and it 's very simple. Thanks for the info!

  • @cmariucci You can use Cinnamon right now (no need to wait).

  • @slickvguy Yes, I saw later on the cinnamon website that it was possible to install it on other distros. Thank you!

  • @cmariucci Why? You can install Cinnamon on Ubuntu :p

  • @Viiralicious Because I'm a Linux newbie, I saw this later that is possible to install also on Ubuntu. ;-)

  • @cmariucci Oh right :> well now you know ^^

  • Nothing special...just a Gnome Shell version of the Linux Mint interface--nothing I'd care to bother with. Why not just stay strictly MATE?

  • @thebiweeklyshow because cinnamon is based on New Technology (Gnome 3) While MATE is a fork of Gnome 2. MATE wont last forever. thus they created a MATE 2.0 if you will. Which uses new technology (Gnome 3) to simulate the desktop instead. :) hope this answers your question.

  • @teufmaster A lot of things won't last for ever...but why not preserve them for as long as possible. You're right, MATE will eventually die, as did DOS, Windows 3, Gnome 1, etc. But until then, it seems dumb to make yet another 'alternative' to Gnome 2 when Gnome 2 is in fact alive and well in the form of MATE.

  • @9T9times I read an article about that. With the bar at the top every app window can eliminate their menu bar until it is selected, avoiding the resize issue and using less space. And when in full screen, the apps menu bar is on the left and the OS menu bar is on the right, sharing the pixel height

  • Not a real fan of the bottom bar and Win95 window manager. They need to copy what Ubuntu and Apple did and have a universal menubar on top to save space and be more efficient, and just keep the dock hidden in the corner gesture

  • @FAKEBC Can you please explain to me how you save space by moving the bar from the bottom to the top? As I see it the bar will occupy exactly the same amount of space and the menus will drop down instead of up and take the same space.

  • It will likely take them several releases to get the Mint Menu in Cinnamon up to the standard we see in Gnome 2x. In the meantime, there is MATE, enabling us to continue using the familiar Mint desktop/menu. Either way, Linux Mint users win!

  • Hope this is what Mint 13 will be like. In 12, they had two bars, that did the exact same things, and you could not even close or edit them. Absolutely disgusting lol. But this looks good. I love Mint :D

  • @nuniruro1515 That's not true. On the settings you can remove the bottom bar

  • @nuniruro1515 You can close and edit them with Gnome Tweak Tool. Download it. From there you can disable what you don't want under the MSGE section. ^^

  • @nuniruro1515

You could remove both bar's if you wanted with gnome extensions.

  • hmm
